Canon's 1D X Mark III sets a new standard for video specs in a DSLR-style camera. What's it like to use? Jordan Drake from DPReview TV shares his first impressions of this camera's impressive video capabilities.
Can DPR find better reviewers who can give justice to the capabilities of this kind of camera? There's a place for humor and there's a place for having someone who can really make the most of this kind of gear.
Fully agree. Such a camera in such hands... no need for a footage since everybody knows what Jordan thinks about using a DSLR for video. Next time: bypass.
It's a risk for anyone to assume that these incumbent reviewers represent the critical universe for the camera market. I hope that risk is thoroughly vetted and thoughtfully analyzed before they continue doing what they're doing. Viewership is not the only metric here.
You review this with vlogging in mind, but your reference is a cinema camera 3 times the price. See the contradiction?
Not every new camera is made to fit YOUR needs. If you are happy with the video look your Panasonic has, good for you!
which other internal raw recording FF camera with or without af are you aware of and what do they cost? After considering these questions you might want to review this cameras video capabilities accordingly.
Almost a joke to see clowns "reviewing" a camera that doesn't target them as market or users. For photographic beasts like this model, maybe DPR can avoid such cosmetic approach.
Been a long time since we've seen unrestrained canon. They used to debut products like this all the time, across several product segments. The 5DII, the SX1, Canon pushed all camera manufacturers to incorporate video and advanced to 1080p30fps while many others offered nothing.
Maybe an RF mount version of the 1DX3 would even put some doubt into S1H users? Competition is good for the customer.
Sure, I get that pros are willing to deal with more inconvenience from their gear to get the shot... of course, they're getting paid to do a job. Still, all things being equal, it seems to me that a lighter rig would have a big advantage in that it could be held steadier (like on a pole) for lots of different kinds of shooting scenarios...
Even for pros it seems to me that extra weight (at least for a portable type rig) is going to be somwhat of a disadvantage...
It’s the new fad for lightness being a virtue and doubtless some will want that. However defining more weight as a problem should be owned by those who mind it. I still lug my 5D mk I’ve 16-35, 12-70, and 70-200 f2:8s across moorland and mountains and don’t see that as a problem. The beef that the 1Dx mk III is heavy didn’t matter a jot to me. I actually like the ruggedness of it, it’s reassuring unlike some bodies that feel like and egg box and flex at the seams . Give me a hammer over a feather duster anytime.
AlexLex, its not like my a7r IV feels "like an egg" but its certainly not THAT convincing, compared to my 1D. Especialy the Screen tilt mechanism looks realy VERY fragile and I rarely use it. Also the weather sealing isnt known to be the greatest.
Also a lot of the lower end bodies certainly dont feel that great, the rebel line, the Sony 6000 line, the lower end nikon line. Its certainly not like there are no solid cameras beside the 1D, but there is no doubt its one of the most robust cameras on the market. :-)
AlexLex - yeah, I agree. There is pretty much no realy bad camera right now on the market. Application may be different, but overall all cameras are fine and usualy also sturdy enough :) Also the technical side of photorgaphy gets insane amounts of attention in general and the discussion over brands is REALY heated...
How does the Canon compare to the Panasonic you use lately? Is the Canon the photo monster with great video capabilities and the Panasonic the video monster with great photo capabilities in the DSLR form factor?
Um, why is Jordan holding a battle mace in the article cover photo? I mean, I love medieval knight cosplay as much as anyone else, but I thought this was a gear review site??
Think for a minute. They are not the same people. Jordan complains and he doesn't use DSLRs, he uses Mirrorless cameras. Mirrorless are perfect for video shooting and it is their users that are pushing for better video specs. As far as DSLR, the form factor is wrong ;) I don't know anyone pushing for better video specs in DSLR (and if anyone does, they probably don't complain when they get them).
Well mine was in 1440p as that's the resolution of my monitor. Did you change the youtube video resolution setting to 4K. I have an extension that uses highest resolution available for my monitor setting.
Jordan/Chris - loved the flashback shots of you guys as kids! OMG. I also loved my 5DII back in the day. As for the 1D III, I guess it's OK, but I'm happy with my Nikon cameras these days. Happy New Year! :-)
Are there other much better color profiles on the Sony? Yes Is it likely that Jordan just screwed up the color grading in the Canon video? Yes
Either camera can deliver great colors. It would be nice however if DPReview could make a "this is how we screwed up video" so users can avoid the same mistakes
@BigSonyfan - nobody buys these cameras to use sooc raw/video for anything. Post and grading is next step. I have Canon and Sony, both different, both good in it's own way. Lot's of my photo friend are hybrid shooters, some of them are real photo-video legends in my country, nobody ever complain on Canon or Sony colors and yes, they all went Canon to Sony road. If you are a pro or semi pro or enthusiast, you for sure grade/process your files. Quit this bee_es troll boy and just tell us your previous account name here. When one goes trough your comments history, it's obvious that you are just plain troll.
Panasonic just released 3 video cameras that stream directly SOOC because of the high demand. Numerous people said they hope the GH5 and S1H will get this option too. So you have no idea what you are talking about. The funniest part is Sony has bad colors and only highly compressed 8 bit video that is difficult to grade because the colors break up. Son Sony actually pretty much forces people to use their UGLY SOOC video. Sony has the worst video specs of all the manufacturers.
So Alex thinks Panasonic releasing 3 video cameras that stream directly SOOC and contradicting his statement was a plot by anti-Sony people out to get him Talk about paranoid delusions. Wow.
@tkbasic To be fair the point was made that SOOC is not SOOC. In most cases, you have many profiles to choose from, with the dedicated video profiles being better than profiles designed for stills regardless of brand.
A video in "Velvia" would have also looked horrible. So obsessing about single profiles is pretty pointless if there are other options to choose from
It is a good example of hideous (Sony) and good SOOC (Canon). Of all the recent video, I would definitely rate Fujifilm, Panasonic ,Nikon, Canon, and far above the Sony and in that order too. I would call Sony 2nd or bottom tier, wouldn't you.
Same for the video specs. 100Mbps 4:2:0 8 bit video these days is bottom tier. I'd ask if yo agree but those are simple facts that can't be denied.

Very likely same person/troll/bot - Tell us you previous account here sad boy!? You are here just for bashing, you have no other intentions except to pollute this community. That's why I despise folks like you, cause you basically destroyed every photo community on the net. Typical example of lying, spinning and cherry picking facts is this thing about Panasonic cameras. https://na.panasonic.com/us/news/panasonic-announces-hc-x1500-hc-x2000-and-ac-cx10-industrys-smallest-and-lightest1-4k-60p
First of all those products are for pro video/broadcasting. We on DPR talk about dslr and milc cameras and when I say that nobody use them without grading/culing, you knew what I was referring but you intentionally spin whole thing. That's very low, even for a troll like you! :))
Its a new camera for Jordan to color grade and he probably was given little time. Still, they are not bad at all. Better than I usually see on the Internet, not as good as the GFX or GH5, and a country mile better than what we usually see from Sony.
SheepStar: I meant the Seattle music scene. As in grunge. Interesting conceptural shortwire as dpreview is mainly Seattle based didn't think about that.
The 4k Sample reel has some horrible warp stabilizer on it. If that's the internal eletric stabilisation. definitely turn it off and use your own stabilisation. It's not a GH5 it's a camera that shoots 5.5k Raw. Respect it boo.
One of the best cameras for video in the market right now. Considering it has excellent AF with excellent touchscreen as well, it may even be the best.
This camera has great specs but some great drawbacks too! Raw video internal: People complaint when Sony ovedrheated after 10 minutes, this camera gives you what? 5 minutes on a large card? But yes the video specs are great, it is a shame that the EIBIS is that bad. It is a shame that when you use higher framerates in 4K you have no AF It is a shame you have no EVF when making video. But this is a great sports camera and that's what it is a great sports camera when you take stills. Video is a nice extra.
Shame? I don't know any camera which can do all what you ask for anyway. It has great internal RAW shooting which its rivals lack (D5 and A9 II) but you way it is a shame? It gives you 4K@60fps and even 5.4K which its rivals lack, but you say it is a shame that it doesn't have AF at 60fps? Sony overheating was and is a real problem, by the way. their bodies are small and that is great for some purposes but it causes overheating (natural result). EIBIS is bad in all cameras by the way. It isn't good if you move your camera. By the way, there only system where you'll get acceptable stabilization is m43, if you are moving your camera. Nikon Z, Sony A7 and Panasonic S IBIS aren't that good in video.
Thanks for your reply. It would have so much better when this, very expensive, camera could do some more. now RAW video is almost unusable as it can only make very short clips. And EIBIS is not only bad when you move the camera, it makes the video look soft, yes that is a shame. And overheating has been controlled in the lateste Sony cameras, but hey lets forget that... Persoannly I think Canon would have done a lot better when they had less great video features, but the features they have really good.
How can you even bring Sony into this convo about video? They can't nor probably will produce good looking video. It's always looks so plasticky and not cinematic at all. I'm talking more the FS series not the A7 but it applies even more so to the A7 series.
It's an ungraded flat colour profile. Most video is shot that way and then graded after (the equivalent of working on your photos on the computer later). The flat profile preserves highlights and shadows - you pull them and do some colour correction later. Watch the captions where they highlight the switch between ungraded and graded.
I am impressed with Jordan"s guns holding that stick with the monster camera on the end. Could he hold it for the length of video recorded with that 128 card?
I really hope you screwed up the color grading in post because that looks atrocious.
A weird magenta shift, combined with varying saturation levels and highly blue-shifted shadows. Seems like a grading issue, but if it's not that would be pretty bad for this camera
Otherwise impressive specs of course. Having AF in RAW or 60p would be nice, but I guess Canon still needs to sell the C500, and others aren't close to those specs yet anyway
