It's that time again! Chris and Jordan recap the best and worst photo/video gear of 2022 while partaking in a competitive drinking game. This year we're joined by unqualified legend Alex Mitchell who hosts a retro video game competition for the ages!
I wouldn't trust anyone's judgement when they'r drunk. By the time they got to the worst categories everything they said shouldn't be taken seriously anymore. Which is a great excuse.
A great excuse but I suspect as you might expect from professionals they had the script or at least the main points prepared before they started drinking so it’s perhaps only the delivery affected by the alcohol, not the message.
Ironic that Think Media on You Tube speaks very highly of the Nikon Z30 as a rounded vlogging camera at a budget, and dpreview does not think so. You guys should watch their video review. They say that the electronic stabilization of Z30 is quite good for self vlogging and they show it while walking with z30, and 4K does not crop which puts it ahead of the stabilization of Sony ZV-E10. Watch their video. Who exactly is right then? Z30 is not the worst camera this year. Sony's new $500. entry level camera ZV-1F is, lacking a load of important features. I can live without headphones but Nikon should have an audio display on screen while taking video, as they do on the Z5 I have for video. Simple firmware fix for the Z30. Nikon listening? Are you sure you don't have it enabled?
One more thing. the Nikon z30 does not crop in 4K while the Sony ZV-E10 does heavily crop in 4K, so wide angle lenses work better on a z30 than a zv-e10 for self-vlogging on the run, and thus makes the kit lens of z30 usable for self-vlogging at arms length so budget beginners can use the kit lens. Think Media shows this. Yes, audio display would be useful, and can be a simple firmware fix from Nikon. Until then Auto audio levels may work with external mic or lapel mic or else test and preset levels in manual.
Digital Camera website (associated with its well known magazine), put out a July 2022 review from Mike Harris, giving the Z30 a 4 out of 5 review. Also in their published charts of that review, compared Z30 to Sony ZV-E10 and Canon M50ii, and rank the Nikon Z30 ahead in photo image quality over those 2 other cameras (aps-c Sony ZV-E10, Canon m50ii) for 1. lower noise over 3200 iso and 2. higher dynamic range. Part is due to lower noise in high ISO of a 20mp sensor beating 24mp apsc sensors. The other part is Nikon is well known for dynamic range and color science. Obviously I own a couple of Nikon cameras. (Fuji apsc did very well in their review also).
As a photo camera it’s probably all dandy, but not having a headphone jack for something marketed towards video is weird to me. They could’ve at least enabled sound over Bluetooth? It’s not an ideal solution, but it would be fine to check for obvious audio problems.
There should have been a category "The easiest / hardest camera to operate while not being sober". It would say a lot about menus and controls — a pure test and an honest reason to get drunk 😅
This video is pure entertainment. Trying to turn it into an informative article would defeat the purpose. PT it in your earlier for the holidays, kick back with a cocktail, and enjoy.
I get the Nikon award since Nikon APS-C feels abandoned at 20mp by now. It makes no sense from a business standpoint to give your cheapest product an edge besides price, but the Z FC could have been 26mp at least. And it need more lenses.
If they announced the z 30 with a small DX 14mm it would have been something.
Viltrox makes a 13mm f1.4 aps-c lens with z mount which works with full AF control, so you have that option and it is affordable. Nikon will likely come out with a wider lens at some point for Z apsc. The 20mp sensor is similar to the D500 and D7500 apsc sensor which has much lower noise at high ISO than the apsc Sony and Canon sensors which you can find the noise charts on Digital Camera website (which is associated with its magazine). Digital Camera gives the Z30 a 4 out of 5 rating in its July review. Nikon colors again look great. Dpreview also has photos samples of Z30 from an earlier review. More Z apsc lenses will be coming out for Nikon or Viltrox who has z mount. There are a few already.
Adrian-Van: I’m sure the pictures are wonderful, as with all Z APS-C. But it’s starting to feel uninspired with 20mp. I don’t like the mp-race - but you should change something with the camera besides cosmetic. And they should release more native DX lenses. I am not calling it bad, just a little uninspiring.
I love almost all my Nikon Z glass. They are absolutely killing it with FX. If their strategy with DX is third party, I guess that’s a way. There are some Voigtländers I’m looking at!
Thanks, however I did learn late that the culture of being drunk is as toxic as the chemical that's stripping my organs and perpetuating, even glorifying it is something I, as a mature person should avoid. It's neither cool, funny or healthy.
I can have a drink and converse at a normal pace at parties though, imagine that.
I've been watching these since before Jordan and Chis joined Amazon / DP Review. It's my favorite video each year. Sad that some people can't see the fun and need to bring their self righteous views.
At the end of the day photography is supposed to be fun and this is fun. Please be happy and enjoy your lives.
I enjoyed it. It was a bit of fun. Too many serious people on here being far too precious and being far too emotionally attached to otherwise inanimate objects made of plastic, aluminium and silicon.
So funny again this year, I always look forward to this episode, and this one really takes the older guys back to the stone age of video games. As a Canon user, I missed a bit the Canon dissing ritual...
The absence of distortion correction for the best lens makes it not the best lens anymore. That is at least for the few LR users around. The integrated profile is disregarded and therefore no straight lines. Huge mess. Adobe has been ignoring user requests for months.
Lazy bird photographers? Only if one is going to the Zoo each time to take picture of them.
This is the Video I actually don't wait for each year. Because literally nothing has changed on my stance on these types of Videos. You don't become more of an Adult by Cursing and Drinking. In fact, it is the exact opposite of being one. Folks can run away from that as much as they want.
I certainly have a ton of bad habits, but I certainly don't promote them. So folks can cry all day about how one is no Fun at a Party, well I wonder if they are. The outrageous claims about those that aren't or are exposed to X as kids will grow up to be Blank.
Folks, you only know your Family, and nobody else's family. However stats about those whom Drink and Drive, well that's public Record. Most Humans are NOT smart enough to know what level of drinking will impair their driving. So no, I don't love it. Never will. But to each to own. I don't like anyone smoking next to me either.
Love it. The Video you always wait a year for to happen. Same procedure as every year.
Now, personally I have to say, this time I’m not with our on a few items. Especially Lens Choice. For me the winner is Nikon with superior long lens selection.
It seems that dpreview is still a bit to much „People Photography“ Centric. The market shows that it’s moving away now from this „area“ ,which at the lower end is under heavy thread of mobile phones, to the more profitable Nature, Landscape, Travel, Wildlife and Outdoor segment.
Three best lenses by a country mile not in order: 1) Sony 70-200 f/2.8 GM II, a real standout in zooms, only 1kg, still accept TCs, stellar IQ, not a dust pump design. 2) Nikon 400 f/4.5 S, crazy low weight, excellent IQ, fast AF, reasonable price. 3) Nikon 800 PF same as for the 400.
Sony 24-70 II is great improvement over the GM v1, but main feature is lighter weight, not a lot better in IQ than Samyang or Samsung, weight is the main benefit.
Giving an award to an unreleased camera with criminally poor rolling shutter is a joke, specs jockeys rejoice.
And yes I do own Sony cameras, just calling it as I see it.
Agree. I really want to upgrade my 70-200, but my existing v1 is so sharp. Even with the slower focusing it’s hard to justify the new cost - old resale value. More than $1000 I guess.
So, 12 months 13 months who cares, wasn't readily available at all in October 2021 BTW. I couldn't find reliable stock for months, just a promise of coming soon.
I find your comments on the poor rolling shutter (which you made several times elsewhere) hyperbolic to be honest, especially with the 'criminal' adjective that you've used here.
You own an A9 as well as an A7rIII according to your gear list, so presumably you know the difference between a camera designed to be used primarily with electronic shutter and one where you can't just use the electronic shutter as a mechanical substitute willy nilly.
The A7V probably has the best IQ of an FF camera on the market, along with good handling and improved AF and IBIS. That's why it won. No it's not good for whip pans and silent shooting of moving subjects. As a 61mp camera thinking it should be seems to me the domain of the 'spec jockeys' you disparage.
Got to be the most compelling and genuinely enjoyable pair on the tube. Making camera commentary and reviews about as fun as one could imagine. Great work as usual!
I skipped right over to "The 'Worst Cameras" of 2022, you guys are true to form -- I could write these reviews FOR you without ever testing a single camera! You thumped on Olympus for the umpteenth time -- as expected; then you use a lot of BS to try and make it seem that you are not calling them 'bad cameras'. Well, that's what you guys get paid to do -- give out a lot of BS.
Um, BTW, please share with us all your 'market research' demanding resolution even greater than the ridiculously paltry 100MP out now. Please. What absolute garbage photos can you possibly shoot with a mere, pathetic 100MP??? I'd really like to read the BS inside that one!!!!!!! Oh, I know! It's bird photographers, so they can leave their house after the bird takes off and get dazzling eye-feather shots from 1/2 to 1 mile away! Big market there!!! Lazy bird photographers.
As they said the worst camera of the year was the Nikon Z30. It wasn't the Olympus OM-5 or the Pentax. They just said those two cameras had not improved much.
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. So many exclamation points, so many question marks. Your poor keyboard.
And because you skipped right over to the Worst Camera category, looking for something to take offence at, you managed to skip the bit where they praised the OM-1.
No. 4 Ohio State will face No. 1 Georgia in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, and No. 2 Michigan will face No. 3 TCU in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl on Dec. 31.
Will anybody whom claimed to be the salt of the Earth when it comes to photographer actually be there taking Photos. You know instead of the Same old Same old farce Camera Brand Provided type events. Now that is what might be called Great Entertainment if we gets some close games. The FroKnows actually goes an takes photos at the Pro Games.
Also, if anyone wants to try a great Older Video Game, try Unreal Tournament, that's still a Great Classic.
Unreal Tournament is a first-person arena shooter video game developed by Epic Games and Digital Extremes. Initial release date: 1999
Well that could apply to literally Half of the posts ever made on DPR comment sections and Forums. So what is really your point? Doesn't fit your narrative?
I recently watched the FroKnows video, "CANON, SONY or NIKON...What PRO’S Use"
Jared did an in-depth coverage of What pro photographers do at a Pro Game. Maybe you should check that out instead of blowing smoke my way. Nah, that's too much to ask about folks not really wanting to look at actual Photography. Along with what the Pros deal with daily plus why we might want some of the latest Gear Upgrades.
What a great way to get drunk, go home and get away with it because it was technically work! As long as a non drunk person drove you both home. Cheers guys.
Fun men cave party at this time of the year. I liked it. I still having fun with my em1, 12-60ft with adapter. For my irresistible bird bath outside, md lens 200mm with adapter ( focus and distance never change) with photoshop 5 long version. I still don't know what I should buy if I do a reset.
Can't say I agree with the lens selection. A new 24-70 f 2.8 for Sony - had to be and very well executed. However I feel Nikon has shown real innovation and understanding in their recent telephoto launches (400mm, 400mm with t/c, 600mm with t/c, 800mm) any one of which (assuming it qualifies as a 2022 lens) are more deserving. I can get an excellent 24-70 f2.8 from any of the brands - but these telephotos only from Nikon...
@gfrensen Indeed I heard that - however some of them have been out for quite a while now (longer than the new Sony) so I would wonder why not - anyhow if they had looked at an early model then I’m sure that would be sufficient - it has for others to pass their opinion…👍
ask tinmanlee why he has not also ordered the 600mm nikon z mount ,oh yeah because he still waiting for his 400mm f2,8 z mount since release ? yes others do probably have similar issues for exotic glass ,i do not think nikon is high tier production like sony or canon.i guess most will accept the burden and wait for quality.
Well in fairness it they do call the category ’Best lens’ not ‘Best lens within certain parameters’. Also at over £2000 the chosen lens is hardly bargain basement…..
Kandid, as they made it clear, only lenses they tested can get the reward. They couldn't test the lenses you liked for some reason. Maybe it was because they are not available at all, maybe Nikon has other priorities then DPReviewTV... Or maybe simply because the time Chris and Jordan have is limited and so they can't test all the lenses. And then it makes sense that the very expensive lenses are not the first on their list to test. What the real reason is? I do not know!
I don't think it's about the price. The run ups were also somewhat high sales focal lengths. They had two awards for video (best vlogging and best video IIRC), why not do best wildlife lens. I do agree with you that a 2x-70 f2.8 is not groundbreaking, but they sell like hot cakes; that might be the reason for the choice. I also like what Nikon is doing with their telephoto lenses, even though I don't shoot wildlife or sports.
Not really at this point. Nikon is the only one consistently having to stop orders due to lack of stock. And it's not because they sell well, since Nikon is way down in 3rd place, near Panasonic and Fuji.
I'd have to agree with Kandid on this one: those Nikon super tele's are all unique and innovative.
The 24-70 GM II is a great lens, but it's still not as groundbreaking as those Nikon super tele's and as someone else noted, one can get world class 24-70's from the other brands as well. That 24-70 just doesn't stand out as much as those Nikon lenses do.
And you know what thought thought ,point being those nikon prime lenses have little competition ,where as there are far more 24-70mm lenses to compare against ,to be the best of a small group or the best of much bigger field, guess it is like comparing the boxing middle weights to the boxing heavy weights ,where the middle weights generally have a better class and skill ,those heavyweights just hit harder at least the current field of boxers.
The Nikon lenses have little competition because no one else makes anything like them! That's the point! They stand out. They are innovative.
The Sony 24-70 GM II is a great lens, as noted...but the other competitors offer very similar products just as good. And it really doesn't matter, because these awards are only for lenses released this year and so the Sony is not being said to be better than other 24-70's because they were not released this year.
But the Nikon super tele's are all unique and innovative for what they do. And super tele's are important to the world of photography, as more and more those who use dedicated cameras are birders/wildlife shooters. With smartphones getting better and better, and basically covering the 24-70 focal range, it may come to a point where it's the amateur BIF/wildlife crowd that largely keeps dedicated camera companies going.
I agree with TRU here but not I’m afraid with Paul Cool. I fear that it is not correct to state that there is not much competition for these new Nikon tele primes. I would say that there is at least as much competition in this area as in the 24-70 arena. These new Nikons are effectively in competition with all lenses which attempt to do the same job ie any telephoto lenses usable for sport action or wildlife - crikey even Nikon produces lots of alternatives in various mounts without touching the other brands….
A few years from now, that Sony 24-70 will not stand out; it will be another great 24-70 among the other great ones by competitors. No one will think of it like, wow, that was a lens of the year...that was something special.
But those Nikon super tele primes...unless Canon and/or Sony answer...will still be thought of as something unique and innovative in the market place. They will still be thought of as something special.
And if Canon and/or Sony answer...then Nikon will be seen as the innovator that started the trend and thus those lenses will still be seen as something special.
IMHO, that 800 PF alone deserves an award...never before have BIF/wildlife shooters had an 800 lens that good, and that small and for what it is, that inexpensive. It is a game changer. And again that lens will still stand out for years.
must admit that 800 mm is a great lens almost enough to tempt me out of sony but it is still a little limiting for all wildlife ,but once the nikon 200-600mm equivalient comes along you will have best of both worlds next year ,and really for birding the 800mm 6.3 is better than the 600mm f4 and is actually a tad sharper .along with the nikon 400mm f2.8 which i feel is ultimate all round wildlife lens if i could only have one lens.Still sony have the trinity lens sewn up which is always good for proffesionals and who knows what is on the horizon ,me i would be happy with a modern mirrorless 500mm f4 ,from either sigma or sony .I guess sony has a different target audience mostly portrait , studio ,event ,canon sports ,nikon wildlife .
@MikeRan I think TRU is.correct here and while I agree the Sony is an excellent lens it is a little perverse not to agree that Nikon have been real pioneers with their new telephoto lens selection. Go on I’ll bite - do please explain the Tamron/Canon comment ❓
Perhaps another way of thinking about it, and echoing Paul Cools comment - a very good nay excellent 24-70 f2.8 will not temp me away from other brands as they already have very good nay excellent versions of this lens in native form. I (and I think others) WOULD be tempted to switch to Nikon for those unique lenses - if interested in that sort of photography. (On safari with a couple of Z9, Z100-400 plus Z600 f4 t/c seems perfect to me 😊)
Do you really do not need a 600mm f4 for safari you may have to think of others in the field ie cramped jeep ,and the traveling with exotics is going to be awakward at best .Mind you if you can afford exotics lenses and 2 z9s you can probably have your own guides and private airlines.
Depends where you are (and if you want to photograph the beautiful birds also). If you are in a private park in S Africa or Kenya then the animals will almost sit on the bonnet - 600mm not so necessary. If you are in say the Serengeti where you are not allowed off road - or indeed the surrounding NP - then 600mm can be essential. I was with a guy in March in Ndutu who was using a Z9, F600 f4, 1.4tc and shooting on crop and it was barely enough at times. My 7D2 100-400L2 with 1.4tc was doing its best 😬😊. If you find that you are too cramped to shoot you are on the wrong tour (imho). Best option is a reputable photo tour - less luxe, more sitting watching animals/birds, more space to take photos.
Kandid. Actually I agree with you. It’s just the “dramatic” TRU that makes me want to puke with his “then Nikon will be seen as the innovator that started the trend”. It’s hilarious because he wouldn’t accept Sony as an innovator in 2017 with the A9 but now everyone is gonna remember Nikon Innovation. Reality is the brand favoritism is too strong, especially here, for any of that BS.
Anyway. I agree the 800 is a cool lens… too long for me but still a cool lens.
And yeah my comment was a little shot at canon who slapped adapters and extenders on their EF primes and called them RF compared to Sony that designed excellent 400/600 from the ground up years ago and Nikon who also designed from the ground up and added integrated extenders.
And Tamron is making some cool lenses. Effective very small lenses including 35-150/2.0-2.8 and 70-180/2.8. Aside from canon’s 28-70/2.0 canon hasn’t done that much interesting. No doubt the RF lenses are good but so are the competition.
I fear TRU would risk nausea in your case (perhaps others?) if he claimed the sky was blue (Canon blue of course) 😊. I think he is these days pretty fair and balanced. However I agree with your comment (perhaps not the TRU bit) as Sony set (and continue to set) the standard with mirrorless cameras 👍
probably better off with a crop sensor set up if it is going to be that distant on your safari ,m43 150-400mm f4.5t/c equiv 1000mm or a r7 and a 600mm lens 960mm .
There's so much disappointing about the ZV-1F. The concept of a compact with an actually wide lens has a lot going for it. All the zooms are at most a 24mm FOV, so going wider offers something new.
If the photography features weren't gutted, the AF an afterthought, the controls a bit more customizable (let that zoom rocker be reprogrammed), it almost could be an interesting camera. There do exist 20mm street shooters, and a responsive pocket prime would be kinda sweet.
But it fails at that by not even trying (or worse--actively trying not to be that), and doesn't really beat a smart phone for vlogging. The fears of it cannibalizing ZV-1 never made sense, because that lens offers something genuinely new and different in that segment of camera.
If it was electronically the ZV-1 except with this exact lens, it'd probably be a winner.
Another year, and everything is way above average. But you did come close this year to saying there might be a a lens and a camera, from a major manufacturer, that are less than fantastic. Still pulling punches, but someday you'll say "My gosh this thing is soft and we tired 17 copes! This is one item you really should not buy."
Tequila was a good choice. Not sure I agree on the Z30, as it is a great second/third camera for travel with it's lens compatibility, yet small size. Looking for a good underwater case, and it may end up on all my trips.
I'm pretty sure the Z30 was originally meant to be a regular photo camera that could shoot video, too. But with the popularity of the ZV-E10 and other cameras leaning more towards video, Nikon gave it a shot due to no EVF, and shifted the advertising for it to video. In that respect, the camera fell way behind, as it was mostly just a Z50 without an EVF, which is still just a photo camera that can shoot video, too.
I’m shocked you guys made it to the dance off. Lol. Who could even stand after several glasses of whatever elixir you guys had to drink. In any case, wonderful episode. Happy Holidays!!
For the life of me, I cannot understand why you have to drink in this feature. I am trying to teach my grandson about photography and I have introduced him to DPR and Chris and Jordan. He loves the reviews and videos, but his parents are trying to teach him about the potential pitfalls of alcohol and drugs. How do I explain to him tyhat HE can not watch this feature where his new heros are getting sloshed in public. Guys, everything has a time and place and and alcohol can be good fun with a couple of friends. But please, stay away from promoting it on your show. You are surely having hundreds of thousands of visitors, by now, but do you really want to put an artificial break on those numbers. Believe me, I am not the only one who dislikes this. Do you really want parents to stop kids looking at DPR because parents put a block on it? I don't think so. Stick to what you do really well, photo and video.
I grew up in a very religious area where alcohol was super taboo. It's funny how the kids who were sheltered, whose parents protected them from content such as this, wound up being the worst drinkers/druggies while those of us who were taught that alcohol is often a part of responsible adult lives.. learned it's OK to stop at two margaritas.
I like that Chris and Jordan get silly once a year :-)
"you didn't grow up in 1970s and '80s Salt Lake City, Utah."
I didn't, but I had classmates, and later students, who did. Experience tells me that while Mr. Bolton's generalization isn't universally true (nor did he make such a claim), things become "cliche" for a reason. I observe that the harder you try to keep them back on the farm, the more determined they are to make up for lost time when they get to NYU.
Raise children for an adult world. Don't keep 'em in a barrel.
jaberg and Bolton -I'm in general agreement with your points. My contention involves addiction, especially long-term --which respects no borders, and is different issue than the kid-in-a-candy-store binging that comes from too much repression. BTW -I attended Catholic School in the 60s and might actually have a clue ;) Like I said, this is a complex subject, and I should have left it alone.
Oh, the fake outrage. Since when is this channel catering to non-adults? As if the internet isn’t full of way worse stuff than two folks talking about gear while not being sober.
DPR TV, please continue as is and ignore the noise.
So, you think because he watches Chris and Jordan drink alcohol, he is going to become an alcoholic? One question: Did your son ever watch a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, like Avengers, Thor, Iron Man etc? If yes, how comes he didn't yet commit homicide or started drinking alcohol or became a violent man? Because these movies show all of that.
I always think of Chris and Jordan as Canadian Cultural Ambassadors. Canada's just not so conflicted about sex or alcohol as the US --- and pretty much across the board Canada still has much lower rates of drug/alcohol addiction or teenage pregnancy. I doubt Jordan or Chris blocked their children from watching this video, and if they're anything like my parents instead gave a lecture on getting a ride home afterwards.
I was brought up in a strictly teetotal Methodist family; now, looking at my wine racks, I wonder how I got from then to now without a DPR Christmas drinking video?
This is one video, one day of the year where they publicly get drunk. Drinking one day a year is hardly demonstrating the the pitfalls of alchohol. If anything it’s a good teaching moment about what alcohol is, what it can do, and like anything, that moderation is the responsible way to consume it. Demonizing it only makes inexperienced drinkers covet it more. Normalize it and it’s not a big deal. Growing up, my parents (European immigrants to Canada) always asked if I wanted the last drop of beer from the bottle after they poured it. They made it so it wasn’t a big deal. As a mid-life adult now, I hardly drink. When I do, I drink to enjoy it, not to get inebriated. Chris and Jordan’s yearly drinking videos are great. Everyone has memories of sitting around with friends discussing seemingly important topics while drinking.
Similar to the day when the State Trooper (or Mayor) visits the school, or “The Morning Zoo” radio remote, to demonstrate their prowess on a tricycle…as they consume successive drinks.
That poor kid......honestly, watching adults get really drunk is probably the most sobering way of teaching kids not to drink anyway :-). It's a win win!
I was leaning towards the new Sony a7rV until I watched the Gordon Laing Video. I strongly suspect that the rumored forthcoming a9iii will be the one to wait for. Same AI chip, likely around 32MP, along with all the other improvement we currently see with the a7rV but Much Faster. Current pricing for that model, $4,499.00.
It really depends of the usage. Btwn these 2 the a7rV is better at slow paced photography while the a9III will be a better generalist camera able to deal with moving subject in a much wider array of situations and light levels.
As a former a9II and a7rIV I was using the a9II a lot more because I had other options for slow paced photography.
I watched Gordon after reading this comment. He is quite positive about the A7RV, though he observes the the value proposition relative to the R4 is subjective.
Don't forget sensor readout speed, too. A7R IV and V both have extremely slow sensor readout, resulting in a bunch of rolling shutter artifacts with silent shutter and video, and they're probably extremely prone to banding under artificial light. The A9 III should be a low res A1, with the ability to shoot successfully under any lighting with silent shutter (first true shutterless camera?), along with using flash. You don't need to use 20/30/40fps to enjoy the benefits of a faster sensor.
Consumer's Distributing! haha. remember that. You pulled a ticket, paid and waited for your item to come down the conveyor.. We bought our 2600 at Crazy Eddie before he got sued or bankrupt or whatever...
He didn't get sued or declare bankruptcy; he fled the country. Now that cameras are just another electronic toy, you have to wonder how Eddie and Uncle Stevie would misbehave and play bait and switch if they were "unauthorized" Sony/Nikon/Canon dealers.
He fled the country, the chain declared bankruptcy, and he was charged with fraud and eventually returned to stand trial. So I guess a little bit of all of the above.
Oh man....We didn't have Consumer's Distributing in the States - that I know of- so I didn't get the reference. But your description reminded me that here in NY we had something very similar....and it took me FOREVER to pull the name "Service Merchandise" out of my brain.
Not included in the competition for best video are the professional lines of exclusive video cameras (never to be used as still cameras) from a variety of brands. I am told by those who use them that these video cameras are still much better at video alone than any of the hybrids.
Actually, I am surprised that Jordan D. never discusses nor uses them.
Jordan has reviewed some Black Magic video only cameras before. That market segment isn't really the primary area for this website, but he does talk about it sometimes.
yes, there should be a category for things like prosumer camcorders, due in part to their far superior ergonomics for event shooting and such.
dpr branched out to smartphones instead, which have the absolute worst ergonomics, but the biggest market share by far... gotta give people what they want.
a porky z9 brick might be an option for shooting cine-style, but in comparison to a prosumer camcorder in an event shooting situation, z9 is a functional/ergonomic failure.
people who have never worked a paid video gig seem to always get that confused.
I think if you're trying to broaden your appeal, the question is both if the old audience want the new content and if the new audience want the existing content. Sure, if you're already looking at hybrids it's interesting to see what you get if you "tip over" to the video side, but I don't think the people who are comfortably on the video side has any interest in most content on DPReview.
I recently shot a ballet dance event backstage with my Z9 on a DJI RS3 Pro.
It worked beautifully.
Shot in Nraw 4k30, edited in Resolve Studio 18. A perfectly smooth end to end experience. The ease of white balance tuning with the 12 bits raw files is a life saver with the changing lights.
My MC10-N remote grip arrived last Friday and will further expand the power of the system.
No VG breaks (to my mind) the most valuable feature of the X-T serie: the ability to be small for casual photography and "pro" (better handling, more power witg the VG).
Also, the sensor is slower as the X-T3 and the H/L ISO markings are still missing
Yes, that is funny (that you would leave a brand because of a single camera). I’m not sure what you were wishing the XH2s would be, but it is getting fairly rave reviews from many corners of the internet.
Amen re: the X-T5. I was vastly underwhelmed and had been looking forward to replacing my X-T4. Seems that all things point to the H2S but it looks so much bigger than my X-T4. Maybe, I'll wait for the X-Pro 3 replacement but I also fear being disappointed though at least I know what to expect regarding its viewfinder.
The biggest letdown on the T5 is the shallow buffer. I know part of it is the slower cards, but 1/10th the buffer.. really?
Otherwise, it seems to be a really nice camera and if it had the top plate LCD like my X-H1, versus that EC dial that I have yet to ever use on any of my Fujifilm cameras, I would be putting the H1s out to pasture right now.
Errrrrr so the worst Photo camera is the Z30 (a camera marketed for Vlogging) because it`s not got a HP jack so not great for Vlogging ? .. "Vlogging" is Video guys ! ... I`m guessing they were so rat-arsed by then they got the sections mixed up - LOL
Out of the actual Photo cameras mentionedI`ll asume its the OM5 - a relabelled EM5-III with a few minor updates intead of a baby OM1 which everyone seemed to want or expect .
Video, in this context, is moving pictures and an audio track. I found the explanation clear enough. Vloggers often need to check audio levels (and quality) prior to/during a shoot.
You know different vloggers than I do. They might start not caring about sound when they first start out…but why move to a dedicated camera if it's not to improve the production value?
In my opinion "checking levels" is a set-and-forget thing for vloggers who aren't traveling. Make a video, check the levels that way, adjust a little, check another, DONE. Sit in the same room in the same location for each video and use roughly the same voicetone. Done.
I mean, their reasoning was pretty clear: they think the Z30 lacks a lot of useful features compared to existing cameras at about the same price point with similar specs. ZFc and Z50 have it utterly whipped for photography from within the same company. For vlogging, ZFc or Sony ZV-E10 just offer far more usable devices, with z50 only lagging because of the awkward flip-down screen.
The OM5 and Pentax KF aren't impressive--they're essentially old models with the slightest of tweaks, but weren't intended to be more than that. Those old cameras are still reasonable for what they are, with good weather resistance, good IBIS, and strong features for the pricepoint.
I get that, but at the end of the day, I think maybe ZV-1F and Z30 (which doesn't punt on stills so much as the ZV-1F does) were the worst two cameras. Better to stick it to them, than to give a camera which doesn't really deserve it the crown for being more photography than video.
At that point, Chris found it difficult to talk about much of anything :-D
But yeah, Fuji went all in on the video camera side, then came out with a less than sharp, less than super fast, power only zoom to go with all those pixels and 8K.. way to drop the ball at the one yard line, Fujifilm. (I shoot Fuji, BTW).
Chris has some the "lightweight gene" if I'm not mistaken, so good for him not to drink too much.
The 18-120 is clearly the cheap consumer "parfocal" video lens relying on electronic corrections for much of its functionally and given its price point. Can't expect too much, more discerning videographers should still prefer the MK cine lenses.
I'm just going to say that it's really fair to exclude the budget manual focus lenses from the "worst lenses" category. Something like the TTArtisan 25/2 or 50/2 aren't trying to be anything other than affordable and small, whereas something like the Fuji 18-120 has ambitions perhaps left unfulfilled.
RIght? Either the plastic handle would break, or the little bubble contacts on the PCB would collapse and then it would be super sensitive yet have no clicky feel. I also had a box of busted ones for parts. Until I started buying The Boss joysticks. Ergonomically even worse, but big and with microswitch contacts they tended to last a long time.
Then there were those tiny little joysticks that Amiga made, in part to finance the development of their nascent computer, the Amiga 1000. Those were actually quite precise once you got used to the small size.
