You may have noticed a new feature in our camera reviews lately – an interactive, 360-degree view. With selectable hot spots, the 360-view gives our readers a closer look at a camera's notable body features. We've been excited to roll them out in reviews like the Sony Cyber-shot RX1R II, and now you can take a look at how we put them together using the Iconasys 360 Product Photography Turntable. Peek behind the scenes and see how it works, and give us your feedback on the new feature in the comments.
It is great to see that you have added 360 product photography to DPReview. When you get a chance, take a look at Object2vr by Garden Gnome. Their software might be able to control your turntable and add the additional functionality that you are looking for.
Keep up the great work, and I have to agree, slow down the rotations!!!
It serves a purpose, but definitely it's not for every product. I was contacted by a watch maker to create 360 images of their watches, which were full of tiny details. It would require careful hours-long retouching of each photo before been able to produce the rotating image. The price to be charged to produce such image is non-sensical, specially for e-commerce purposes.
But I guess it's fine for "easy" stuff. Still the main product image is the one that attracts the buyer and the 360 image (or a video) it's just additional visual information.
"main product image is the one that attracts the buyer and the 360 image (or a video) it's just additional visual information."
But the details and product description are what sell the item, especially with items where good design is a large part of the appeal.
So yeah you need a hero shot to attract people to look, but once someone is attracted to say 2-3 possible items they need to narrow down there choice - and that's where this kind of thing will be helpful.
Selling something like a vase, this might not be useful, but selling say phone, a camera, a car , a backpack, then this kind of thing should be useful.
I would like this/an app to display some of my 360 landscape photos-for pc and web use. Asked in diff DPR forum if anyone knew an app for this not long ago - zero responses.
A college student several yrs ago on here had an app and it worked great - he asked if anyone was interested, zero interest besides me, so he never told how he did it or shared his app.
Are DPR forum users Luddites or just not interested in these types of things ??
Displaying 360 landscape photos? Don't despair! That's been solved for a long time on the web (through any web browser, mobile or desktop, online or offline), and there are even dedicated mobile apps like 360cities.
Im with arhmatic on this one...prefer the old way...the close up shots of the controls was better than watching this thing make me dizzy!!...other folk may like it...I don't...
Ok,,I've just played around with it a bit more and my initial though was based on not being able to get close up views...well...you can so I will change my opinion to "it's ok"...on my Android tablet it is as already mentioned "a bit clunky" user interface wise...
Is there anything specific about the 360s that turns you off, or is it the concept in general? Not trying to be snarky, but we are hoping for any changes we make to better serve readers, and specificity helps us with that.
Ok, here is my opinion and the things I didn't like much: 1) It starts the rotation automatically and immediately when the page loads and is faster than I'd like. It's a bit frantic. 2) In my PC at least, the mouse scroll wheel changes the rotation direction instead of zooming in and out. 3) The pop up pics in the green squares are supposed to show details but are fairly small, unless you go full screen. 4) When zoomed in and pinch with left click, sometimes it rotates the image and other times it moves it left and right. 5) It lacks a dead on top image of the camera. 6) It lacks images of the side ports opened.
Much better than the weird, non-photoreal 3D object views on B&H and a few other sites. Very nice to see the cameras in something other than a few cardinal views, and the hotspots add some nice info.
Like some others, I'd still like to see the general dimensions (in just one, straight-on view), as well as the ability to hide the hotspots. And, yes, I also found the "instant on" auto-rotation a little disturbing. Maybe a 2-3 sec. delay?
So yes, I like it, but then I've been into this kind of thing for decades. I use Object2VR for my 360 object views (and yes, it also controls a turntable and automatically triggers a camera).
