I don't see what could be wrong with an R7 and the 100-500. You could also see the two 7Ds with a 500 or 600 f/4 attached thus I guess it would be a more afforadble option for birders and even more affordable if you adapt a 60/150-600.

I expect to even see the R10 with all those mentioned lenses out there because the lens is a bit more important than the body and the R10 is fast for its price.

Why not ? The r7 is wethersealdd , 15fps and a fantastic autofocus and ”only” 1500dollafs . Great combo with a 100-500

I looked at the skateboard and volleyball shots and it looks like the cameras missed by a smidge. I saw soft faces and found the focus was in front somewhere on the front leg. The last male volleyballer image is correctly focused on the face (or glasses in this case). Seems good enough for web but probably not for print.
Current gen Fuji with a fast focusing lens is not as bad as people make it out to be. There's certainly something to be said for set-and-forget tracking, which is only available in the X-T3, X-T4, and X-S10 currently as far as I know.

I'm sure Canon would not release a new APC system without having made a long roadmap of affordable lenses and smaller formfactor cameras.

If I was a Fujifilm exec, I would go full head on head with Panasonic, to make Fujifilm the go-to brand for videocentric cameras and vlogging gear.

(And this might be exactly how Fujifilm intend to response to these market changes - we will see when the X-H2S is premiered (next week?) )

Fujifilm offers a lot more for an APS-C shooter. Awesome lens selection, several different bodies (even the rangefinder-style), film simulations. Nikon Z50 exists for a while and didn't endangered Fujifilm so far. This cameras are not different. Also, X-H2 will shoot 40 FPS, it will shoot 6K video, and it will have a stacked backside illuminated sensor.

Strobist, We've seen how many lenses were developed for ef-m and how long that took... The fact that they're just starting with a couple of lenses when they already have fully designed EF-M lenses that they could easily port isn't very promising.

And smaller cameras? Wouldn't this be the ideal time to show those small cameras? Compact R10 and DSLR styled R7?

If I was a fuji exec, I wouldn't be worried at all by those new canon offerings. The user looking at a compact and stylist fuji with a wide selection of affordable lenses isn't the same one looking at a mirrorless canon rebel.

This may even bring more users to fuji. The biggest competition from canon was the M line, that now sits in an awkward place.

I am still enjoying the awesome lens line up over there at Fujifilm and I feel it is the lens more than the camera that makes the photo(quality).
For sure APS-C gets more competitive and that may, opposed to your prediction, be a good thing. It draws attention to APS-C and Fujifilm might benefit from that.

Fuji still has better design going for them (which may be important to entry level insta users). Both the R7/10 and Z50 look strange because of the oversized mounts and lenses have a weird large flange due to FF sized mount. Fujis cameras+lenses look much more well rounded from a design perspective.

I hear you guys - and your points makes sense.

Still I'm wondering, - The market is fluid, always shifting, never in the same place, so it will be interesting to see how this pans out.

- Probably already 2023 there should be market indications (sales numbers) on how the strategies for the big players are working out.

Either way, the photo community is spoilt by good cameras from all manufacturers now, even so at a slightly higher price.

If Canon dedicates the same effort for the crop sensor R system as it did for the EF-S system, then there’s no fear for Fuji. For EF-S there’s only two dedicated higher end zoom lenses: the 17-55 f2.8 and the 15-85 f3.5-5.6, that originally shipped as a kit with the first 7D, but was replaced by the cheaper 18-135. I’m not seeing Canon releasing lenses similar to Fuji’s for their crop sensor eos R system. But I hope I’m wrong. It is an ever changing market as you said.

@Strobist you are spot on, there is no such thing like a really bad camera out there these days… and I really hope that the hand full of camera makers all survive! At the end of the day we all benefit from competition and it’s a good thing to have different brands and different philosophies in product design ariund.

Fuji will be fine, they have a good brand, a large lens range and they are trendy cameras, Canon don't even have a wide zoom yet - why no 10-22 at launch???.
The X-H2 will be an interesting comparison to the R7 though... needs AI AF IMHO.

Oh my sweet summer child... Canon had this neither for EF-S, nor for EF-M. The chance that they'll develop RF-S into a full system to compete with Fuji X is nil.

If you want APS-C, Fuji is the only game in town, and that will stay this way.

I don't think Fuji is worried about these Johnny-come-lately cameras with two slow kit lenses.

Best or better doesn't always prevail in the marketplace.

Fuji has done so many exceptional things around that single APS-C sensor form that none of the other OEMs even venture to try.

But t is impossible to bet against Canon even if these 2 new cameras are nothing to write home about, just eliminating the SLR mirror and using a too large mount.

Canon and Nikon will most definitely NOT plan extensive APS-C lens lineups because their entire business model is about forcing the upgrade to their expensive 35mm systems. After literally decades of them doing this I thought this would have finally sunk in.

No matter how you look at it: it would be stupid to ignore Canon (kind of re-) entering the APS-C world - no matter how weak or strong the offering is, they are a giant!
But the good news is: Fujifilm has been clever the last decade and there is no reason to believe they change…

I would jump back into crop-frame Fuji if they would only drop X-Trans, the reason I finally left.

@Welsh - this seems to be more of a religious topic than anything else :-) I for one absolutely benefit from the advantage XTrans offers - visibly less color noise (luminance noise is roughly the same, but way less intrusive and better to handle) and less prone to moire - but I understand that every technology comes with disadvantages as well and if it does not work for you - well, then it does not work :-)

Yepp - for the R10 the EVF might be acceptable, but for the R7, this is really a joke. I'm not in the market right now, but the EVF would be an absolute showstopper for me.

It's a few thousand dollars or so cheaper than the R5 and with it cropped, only comparable to 17mps. So this 33 aps-c is going to be a much better value for those that need reach. Not so hard to understand...

What?? Tell that to the birders. And cheaper = more sales for Canon and more happy customers who can now buy the R7 that may not be able to afford the R5. And a lot more reach than the R6, for a lot less price.

What? If all you have is a 100-400mm FF lens and you put that on an APS-C camera (which you now can do natively on Canon) you get a field of view of around 600mm lens. That mean the bird appears bigger in the frame ag. it covers more pixels on your censor = better picture quality.

And my main point was that the new R10 and R7 was cheaper than the R5 so you can buy an R7 plus the 100-400mm for less than one R5.
That to me alone is a big selling point.

If you crop on the R5 to an R7 size photo, you end up with 17.5MP - the 32.5MP of the R7 really make a difference in resolution, so I think the camera makes sense for wildlife and Macro photographers.
Also, of course, it is what, a third of the price?

You could get an X-T30 for like $600 and stick a 100-400 or the coming 150-600 on it and save big bucks.
