Nikon has just announced the Z30, its entry-level Z-Mount APS-C camera aimed at content creators and vloggers. Fortunately, DPReview editor and very good sport Richard Butler was able to join Chris in the beautiful town of Canmore, Alberta, to test the Z30's abilities.
Hilarious video! Loved Richard walking through the shot.
The camera is OK, but I’m not sure I see a reason for it with the Z50 being approximately the same thing. Gotta keep the hype up, though. I get it.
That said, I wonder if there’s a better direction they could be taking - both in marketing and product. I know there’s a lot of opinion, and I don’t have the answers, but it does feel like more of the same.
Replying to myself here, as there doesn’t seem to be a way to edit existing comments. (On mobile. What year is this, again?)
I forgot: tally lamp and better LCD for vlogging, vs Z50. Makes you wonder…why no IBIS? If the project team decided it was too expensive to include it, or too bulky, perhaps it shouldn’t have been made at all?
Now a new content creator, or one looking to go past a cellphone, has to also budget a gimbal, if they’re determined to use this product beyond stationary. Or purchase a competing brand.
I know this is kind of off topic, but I just have to mention that the video footage from the GH6 is absolutely gorgeous. This video looks incredibly good. I don't think Panasonic is getting enough praise for this new model, and Jordan produces sensationally good work.
There’s a reason why MFT cameras survive: excellent IBIS. Why does Nikon, Fuji, and even Sony refuse to put IBIS in their APSC cameras is still a mystery to me.
Somehow Pana decided that their vlogger model in the G100 wouldn't have IBIS either, which was kinda bizarre since it's the size of various other bodies with IBIS despite it's GM/GX### underpinnings. Most of the vlogging bodies seem kinda slapped together tbh...
Always enjoy Chris videos, regardless of subject. As for Nikon, if they had wanted to offer a clearly better choice than Sony, probably ensuring strong sales, then IBIS. But as always, Nikon is about keeping up not innovating or offering more. Personally, no EVF = no sale, but I'm no "vlogger."
A total yawner IMO with a recycled sensor. IMO to thrive in the camera market you need to bring home runs, not also-rans to the market. There's no room in a collapsing market for "almost good." They already can't ship what they produce, you would think it would be a better idea to put parts and production into the products with waiting lists. I would think a crop sensor camera, fast frame rate, no blackout, and all the eye AF modes is the camera they need to release.
FuzzyDice, yes the Z9 is a great camera, and it puts them in the same league as their competitors. But, while they have some great Z lenses, they also have a raft of lenses I would say are not class-leading. Yes, they are superior to F-mount versions in most cases, but lag competitors. Case in point, the 50mm f1.2 compared to Sony's, or the 20mm f1.8, same thing. Maybe I'm too concerned about their future, but I see a dismal camera market in 5 years or so and I think they should nail every release as best in class(Nikon had the best DSLRs for some time IMO) so they can regain market share before the big crunch comes. I like my Z7 better than any Sony I've owned(I've owned most of them). But it's AF and speed leaves a lot to be desired.
vlogging sample of Z30 (in Japanese; the videographer used full frame Z 20mm, Z35mm and Z50 mm lenses). In general, very happy, except that 4K60p is not available. Also covers optional grip remote control for Z30.
All the "selfie" video footage shot on the z30 is so shaky it could really use a lot more stabilization. No way I'm watching an entire video shot like that.
Curious how the market responds to this option. I certainly have my own thoughts, but any negativity surrounding it was utterly curtailed by the mountie "Elk" comments lol.
I remember buying my D5500 way back from Chris Nichol's Camera Store review, I remember thinking "This guy is outstanding and should be on a larger venue"!
Unusable? Did you watch the video? The handheld shots are good. 16-50 kit lens has VR, have you used it? I used it on a Z50, it is a good lens. Z system has a good line of lenses, and they are adding to their lineup. It could still be an entry level winner without third party lenses.
From my experience, too many third-party lenses are a problem than a blessing sometimes. Especially when first party lenses are affordable.
The walking footage was very choppy. And Z-DX only has a few lenses, which really limits you once you leave the kit duo.
Why would third party lenses ever be a problem? You can choose not to buy them. It's great to have lenses that try new things or give you quality at a much cheaper price.
