I quit watching part way through. I know it's New Years, I know I'm a square, and most people today think a lot of things are funny, I have a thought for you - Just as many people would watch you, and people like me would not turn you off, if you just knocked off the, well, to some of us anyway, the offensive stuff. I might be the only one to actually tell you this, but there may be more that you lose and just don't know it. Happy New Year, and maybe I'll see you in 2020.
Number one rule of recording audio, especially if the presenters are getting more drunk by the sec, LEAVE SOME HEADROOM. Like with pictures, expose to the right and back it off a bit. Peak distortion very noticeable. Amusing nonetheless.
Can't believe most liked watching a couple of guys get druk and babbling about camera gear. I stopped watching, couldn't stand it. I like Chris and Jordan, but sober. Not drunk.
What a dreadful pair of people. This is the first and last time I will ever watch them and I only watched the part about the worst camera. They even got that wrong by having CANNON, (not Canon) as the worst.
Best and worst Chris and Jordan video of the year?? This one has to rank up there pretty high! Not saying if it's the best or worse though, you decide.
Pentax did not release a camera this year, so non-starter on any list. New APS-C flagship due next year, which will most probably excite everyone >but< DPR.
After all the new competitors, Jordan went with the ones he is most familiar with and trusts knowing they are still excellent video cameras.
It reminds me of most professionals. They don't want the latest new thing, they want what they are comfortable with and what is still good enough for the job. The GH5 and GH5S are still two of the best ILCs for video no doubt, and still impressive.
You are right, these are still very impressive video cameras, there is though one big reason why they are not in the list: They didn't see the light in 2019, but previous to this year. But yes still very impressive and I agree with you about professionals not switching with every new (improved?) camera. amateurs like many people on this site could learn from them!
The A9 update wasn't much of an improvement considering it was already great at AF and a sports oriented camera where animal AF (the doesn't work with most animals on Earth) is rarely needed. On the other hand the Canon AF went from bad to very good. A very large improvement. Even the Olympus had a larger improvement making it one of the better camera for video due to the combination of good AF and gimbal like stabilation (something none of the other cameras have). Same goes for the G9. So, yeah the A9 improved. It was already really good. But the improvement wasn't very large compared to the others.
Exactly...it's most improved...as in the difference between where it started and where it is today. Some want to give the award to the a9 as a measure of how good it was to start with.
Here's an extreme analogy: Usain Bolt shaves .002 seconds off of his world record in the 100 meters. A fat couch potato guy loses 80 lbs and starts to run 5K's in decent times. Who is the most improved?
as dprtv put it: "Canon... after giving us pretty lame firmware updates for a decade now... all that I could think about was how much the [EOS-R]autofocus was annoying me"
companies should not be rewarded for premature releases like eos-r, that fail to perform in an adequate manner.
camera buyers should never be forced into doing product testing, while the company that sold the product uses future firmware releases that may or may not fix the problems.
How terrible to see complaints and criticism of big firmware updates. We need more not less.
I do agree with you though, Sony should have had interval shooting day one, but like Canon it is good they added it. But the Animal eye AF which works for very few animals is not very important on a sports camera (except maybe horse racing, lol)
@MILC man. I think you are confusing the categories of most improved and best. Sony should be applauded for producing the A9, A9ii and A7iv, geat cameras all, but so should Canon for giving the R such a compelling update which significantly improves capabilities.
Video and written content are very different mediums. In many cases, printing a transcript of a video would work about as well as having Chris and Jordan sit on camera and read the text of a printed article. I can't fathom how the essence of this particular episode would even translate to written text.
Speaking as a web content professional, transcripts are actually a requirement for accessibility - not everybody who can see well enough to take photos can hear well enough to work out what two drunks are blathering about. ;-)

One of these days imma splurge on a Q2 or something like it... It'll probably be the last category of dedicated cameras to disappear (after the workhorse ILC), so I have time to save. :P Personally I think I'd like the 35mm on the RX1 better, but I guess there's plenty of cropping leeway with those and Leica even gives you different FL frame lines no?
Yup. Chris may hate 35mm, but I love it - it's my default lens choice. Leaning towards the Q2, though, as when you shoot jpeg + raw and set it to a 35mm/50mm crop, it actually saves the whole 28mm view in the raw. And the 35mm jpeg is still 30-odd megapixels. Brilliant idea. I wish my GR did that.
The key is the user experience. When you hold a Q2 you immediately understand that it's an entirely different type of camera. The build quality is exceptional. It feels like a masterpiece of engineering and design; a work of art. I know one guy who was a critic of it just on the idea of the price, but then he held one in a store and said OMG.
Then there are the simplified controls and menu. Again, a refreshing break from most cameras.
So if you do treat yourself to a Q2 or really any Leica you will be giving yourself an amazing experience. It's like driving a fine car, or having a gourmet meal with fine wine, etc.
Thoughts - I've never picked up a Q2, but I agree totally that the user experience is a major consideration with any camera. Too many people just look at spec sheets and test charts, without realising that a camera that feels comfortable in the hands, and pleasurable to operate, will get used a lot more often, and provide greater enjoyment than a techno-box with buttons.
They must live on another planet. The Canon RF lenses, 15-35/2.8L IS, 24-70/2.8L IS, and 70-200/2.8L IS, released this year are some of the sharpest zoom lenses on this planet. Not even a mention...
Agree with the best lens, the Tamron 35mm 1.4 and disagree on the best camera. The Fuji medium format is the best. The Sony is an incremental upgrade to what was already a very good body.
The point is: Everyone has it’s own opinion - period. You can‘t say „That‘s not true.“ or something like that, if for someone camera - or kamra - a, b or c is the best, because what is best is highly subjective!
It‘s like someone thinks „Orange is the best colour.“ (because he feels good, everytime he sees it) and you say „No, that’s not true.“ - doesn‘t make any sense.
BTW...the best kammrer for me is the one i can afford. Till 2014, it was the Cannen Ey Ti-Won.
One value of these rankings is that they inspire hopefully fun debate. It's like sports guys arguing over who's best in terms of teams or athletes, or someone arguing over best movie, or best song. It's all rather subjective.
So in that spirit, I will say that I too believe the Fuji GFX 100 merited Camera of the Year...it stretched the boundaries and broke more new ground than the Sony.
In a year or two the GFX 100 will still stand out...
Great entertainment. You should post blue links to the videos you made over 2019, just to remind people what you reviewed. Also helps with getting more views.
Next I would like to see best of worse of dpreview videos. As in: most favorite fetal Jordan photo. Best/worst place to film in for 2019 (a studio, desert, brewery..) Best on camera slip up. Maybe even a gag real, thats not just 20 minutes of Chris complaining about 35mm lenses.
Jordan, you are my hero. I would have slapped the cutsieface right back. With a closed fist. With your frame, the effect would be comical. Yet, you maintain your composure. Good for you, man, good for you! Seriously, kindness conquers cockiness any time. Kudos!
Interesting that of the cameras mentioned, it's the $10,000 Fuji GFX 100 that to this day remains hardest to obtain. It's really the only 1 of the 3 "best cameras" that you cannot get as of this moment, at least at the major retailers like B&H.
Of course the GFX 100 is manufactured in smaller quantities, but still it is revealing that this very expensive camera has been so popular in the market.
Between the lines of your posts Thoughts I read a very Thoughtesque statement ie Sony doesn’t sell since they are available. But I must be misinterpreting of course.
Availability has nothing to do with sales. Look at the Noct 58. No one buys it and no one is stocking it either.
The GFX 100 is not on Amazon top 100 Mirrorless sales at all. It may still be a very good camera, but seems not so many thinks its good value for the money
Hint: One doesn't buy Photogear @amazon. And your conclusion...OMG. The GFX-100 is for Pros, which do earn their living with it, Landscape, Studio, Architecture, Haute Couture, for instance.
Seriously, nobody into the world cares, what is being #1 into Sales on Amazon, besides some Managers there.
My point is this: for such an expensive camera and its very high end specific niche, it seems to sell very well. This is evidenced from the fact that the major retailers are always sold out of it. If you read the forums there are some who waited months for their GFX 100 arrive...there's one really good commenter named Greg who had this happen to him for instance.
So the GFX 100 seems to be exceeding sales expectations and I think that's remarkable for a $10,000 camera.
I know a guy called Michael who was mad enough to buy a Noct 58. He waited months for it. This anecdote indisputably proved that the Noct is a hot seller.
I started to fall asleep. Don’t care about martinis, marvel movies nor directors. Who hangs paper streamers over a lit fireplace even though it is fake? If you’re wearing a T-shirt and feel cold, might I suggest putting on a jumper rather than lighting a fake fire.
