A 'Wooden Niccolls' is an episode in which Chris and Jordan bring together a film crew to recreate a scene from a Hollywood movie, all while testing a piece of gear. In the first Wooden Niccolls for DPReview TV, their team used the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K (BMPCC 4K) to recreate a scene from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
But wait – there's more! You'll go behind the scenes to see how the scene was shot, meet members of the crew, and learn a bit about rigging the BMPCC 4K. Will Chris win the Oscar for his portrayal of Kate Winslet in a dramatic role? Will Jordan's touching performance bring you to tears? We look forward to critics' reviews.
If there's a movie episode you'd like to see our dynamic duo recreate, tell us in the comments!
As always, the best thing on DPR is Chris and Jordan. I wonder if the other guys secretly hate you guys given all the love you get and all the fun you have...?
I enjoyed the video. This one was particularly fun and informative.
I was a bit surprised that this is “for DPReviewTV” but didn’t pay the entire crew. With the debates in these forums as well as articles from DPReview itself about proper compensation for use of skills, it seems odd that they were volunteers. Am I missing something?
A) I am guessing they are friends B) journalism is on a shoestring budget nowadays and I guess DPR is no different C) they get exposure and experience on a very popular website
Interesting, but i was waiting for more on the BMPCC4K and how it functioned, plus the issues of working with the BRAW files and working with Resolve. In other words, some sort of a review.
Will there be an intro to basic use of Davinci Resolve 15? I have difficulty in figuring out how to trim 1 frame at a time.
The famous scene from The Matrix (360 degree camera pan) or fighting scene would be good to test some super slo-mo camera quality and efx compositions. :-)
DPR can substitute the many cameras used with a drone and programmed its flight path. Something like that should be able to simulate the effect on a green screen.
@silentstorm To use a drone with a green screen all around is already quite the elaborate setup. I can't imagine how few readers would find such a lesson to be useful.
OR... maybe see if you can get a bunch of those new RX0 II cameras all tethered together to get a bullet-time type of shot. Not a new concept for Youtube, but I think it would be cool to see from these guys.
When you think it's £1115 and What's in the box: Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K Dust cap 30W power supply with locking connector and international adapters SD card with software and manual DaVinci Resolve Studio with activation key
I make that the same price as 4 years subscription to Adobe Premier. But with this you get an amazing 4K camera and the editing software to keep with all updates ! Might be worth a peek at the URSA Mini , around £2k but EF mount ( not 4/3 like pocket) and global shutter ! Plus of course Resolve included.
Don't you just smile when they hold hands , such friends !
Thanks for the tip about Ursa Mini Ken! I looked it up earlier and was not impressed from DR results, now you reminded me again, and I went back and check it again. To me Pocket cinema 4k with 4/3 mount looks much more promising in multiple ways. Bigger sensor or mount is not gonna give you anything if the output doesn't match, you will be carrying a huge heft and nothing more. But Ursa Mini 4.6k looks promising and is substantially expensive. I am thinking to buy Resolve Studio standalone now as am hearing a load of praise, atm stuck with premiere as one of the ongoing project is half baked in it! Thanks once again for your very useful write-up! ohh and here is the link: https://www.cinema5d.com/blackmagic-ursa-mini-4k-vs-4-6k/
Chris, you are the best Kate Winslet that I have ever seen, as our president would say. That fake one should eat her heart out. Best of all, if, for any reason, agents from LA won't be lining up at your door, no circus will refuse a bearded woman!
I'm blown away with this camera. It really makes me think more than twice about getting it instead of Panasonic S1. I'm totally sold on BM Raw.
