The Fujifilm X-E4's classic looks and compact size almost suggest an X100 series camera with interchangeable lenses. How close does it come? Chris shares his first impressions of this new camera straight from his basement quarantine.
The best camera reviewers are Canadian: Maarten Heilbron, Gerald Undone, and Camera Conspiracies (and some I neglect to mention) – with Chris/Jordan at the top of the list.
This X-E4 looks like a joke. For the super specs, plus IBIS and something to hold on to, get the X-S10 instead. For a sliver of metal to hold your lenses, get the X-T200. Or stick with your "old" X-E2 or X-E3. The new/improved XF 27mm f/2.8 lens is being marketed (and reviewed) alongside the X-E4 in order to make the latter seem more appealing.
All the best to Chris! I have gone through C19 infection close to zero symptoms myself after Christmas, so recovery is the rule and problems the exception for most infections.
My daughters still can't smell much after several weeks.
On a positive not quite serious note: You might get to keep all equipment now since it is "contaminated" :-)
Being a relatively high-risk individual, I've been staying away from people as much as possible, and Chris and Jordan have been a welcome diversion this past year. Here's to a speedy recovery for Chris with no long-term issues, and that we all get through this safely.
Glad to see you're doing OK Chris. Wishing you a very speedy recovery. And I echo a reader below who says you guys are the only reviews I actually watch and enjoy watching on camera gear. Keep it up! The XE4 looks like a solid little addition to the great Fuji lineup of gear.
Sorry to hear you got COVID. I admire your professionalism, I was infected last April, while not life threatening it was no slouch either. Rest up and be vigilant while in quarantine, do not overlook the symptoms.
We will hopefully see you soon in better circumstances, Chris! For the time being my advice: Look for Colt Clark and the quarantine Kids YouTube! These vids are moodlifters (Bellamy knows to perform even like Mick Jagger).
not sure I can mis the second dial, at times I am realy frustrated with x100T for this, just not enough buttons for core functions I am used to (compared to oly Pen-F I used alot)
I have used rear dial all the time in X-E3 as well as front one. Chris did not say a word about removed SCM focus selector too which I was using quite often. He also did not mention about missing front grip and back grip for thumb res, two more fn buttons (in X-E3 Fuji removed 5fn buttons including D-Pad), and repositioned joystick to a bad lower place - far from thumb. As X-E2 owner and X-E3 user I am not going to buy that cripped X-E4. I was tempted to buy Pen-F but I do not like 4:3 sensor ratio. Now I am waintg to see new Sony APS-C release - probably A6700 or A7000, if Sony adds front dial I wll probably switch.
The problem for me with switching systems is my long term investment in lenses, mostly. A switch means starting from ground zero with lenses. Also, a learning curve to become comfortable with peculiarities of the new camera.
Of course, but my main priority is smaller RF styled camera with good EVF and direct and fast access to features and settings, X-E4 becamed in this area a complately fault - Fuji transformed X-E line to boutique pocket point-and-shot. For FE mount there are these days many not expensive and good lenses from other manufactures to choose - Sigma, Tamron, Viltrox - so, that's no problem for me at all, I shoot mostly with 24/35/50/85mm and 135mm primes and all of them are for FE nowdays with good prices, i.e. Sony FE 85/1.8 is cheaper, lighter and smaller then Fujis 90/2.
The only guy who got me watching video reviews. (Still prefer written) Great job, especially considering Covid! Get well soon! Disappointed still with the downgrade of the camera.
Also as an owner of a X-E3, I'll most likely move on to something else. I'll definitely keep my X-E3. The X-S10 is starting to look interesting even though I didn't like it when it first came out.
As an owner of the X-E3 I wouldn't look at X-E4 either, I suppose. But as an owner of the X-H1 the X-S10 looks just like the same, but newer and smaller and less well built. Whereas the X-E4 all of a sudden looks very interesting as the smallest X-mount to take for a walk sometimes. The X-E3 I never liked because of the buttons getting in your way (e.g. Q). Same with X-T30. Others comlain about the same on the X-H1. I never pressed it accidentally. So X-E4 is sexy for its reduction to the max, but actually quite close in price to the X-S10. So I'm wondering...
No IBIS in the new X-E4. That makes it a very hard sell for me. Small size is attractive but I've lost too many pics to my shaky hands in dimly lit European churches and cathedrals, and Paris at night.
@Jimmmy: OIS should work fine with that, right? Of course, you'll need a lense with OIS then, and primes are out, but then they are faster in the first place. IBIS is mostly essential for Video work. For stills it's nice to have. I took pictures with the fujicrons in hardly any light (incandescent) handheld and the X-T10. Lower the exposure time and push the RAW. IBIS won't help there either if people are moving (in the church).
All the best and relax! In terms of the X-E4 I am a little bit disappointed. Having the X-E3, which by the way I am using for streaming and it works really perfect, I considered to buy the X-E4 as my primary photo camera, but without weather sealing which is mandatory for me, and I hoped that it will have this feature, I will definitely go for the X-T3.
Very tepid review. As an X-E3 owner I've been looking forward to the X-E4, but really can't find any compelling reason to upgrade. Kind of a disappointment considering the X-E3 came out in 2017. Version 4 is a half point upgrade at best.
Great video! Your Fuji X-T20 review was a significant influence in my decision to buy one last year, just before they ceased to be available new. So glad that I am no longer looking for a camera or you might have tempted me again with the X-E4 :)
Meanwhile, best wishes for your recovery. My wife tested positive here in Hamilton last week so we are also in lock-down for another week. It was bad enough before but my son and I are now in danger of going stir-crazy!
Oh dear, that was a bit of a shock to hear that you are suffering from Covid, Chris! Yet I am so impressed that you mustered the energy to make this great little video. Please take good care of yourself, and get well soon!!! My best wishes to you and your family!
Get well soon, Chris! Thanks for the review, too, nicely done. - But actually, I care more for your health and that of your family than for the review of any camera. :-)
Best wishes for a speedy recovery! Also, nice looking camera.. and thank you for setting such a great example with regards to proper Covid quarantine procedures. Something that apparently, a lot of Americans could stand to follow.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery. It's a relief to see you are not getting the worst of it and able to ride it out safely. All's well that ends well :-) Sexy little camera BTW Ian from Toronto
It is hard to focus on the rest of the video once I know Chris is suffering from COVID, which is creeping closer and closer to everyone's inner social circle. Get well soon, Chris.
I love Deadwood. I especially love the swearing in Deadwood. I especially love listening to Calamity Jane swear. That is the best swearing I have ever watched.
I have handled Sony's a6000, not nice to hold. Not sure about other a6xxx, but they do look similar. Sony seem to be very pleased its a6xxx and a7 x design, all look the same despite very different spec and prices.
Nothing can stop you, Chris- not even Covid. Your professionalism shows. Great job as always. Please take great care of yourself and have plenty of rest. Get well soon.
If camera companies want to truly compete with smartphones for relevance, they need to offer models that are as easy to use as a phone, but offer substantially better image quality.
