The Canon EOS R6 Mark II is here, and we've been able to shoot sports with it in beautiful San Diego, California! Check out how the new sensor, 40 FPS shooting, autofocus and video capabilities perform while seeing fit people do impressive things!
All this needs now is a 32-35mpx sensor now and the R6 range is a perfect all-rounder pro mirrorless camera series.
Canon aren't stupid though are they - 45mpx is the reason why people shell out 4 grand for the R5 - bit frustrating that Sony had this tech 5 years ago and Canon are making people pay a heavy premium for it now.
I am too welded into Canon EF lenses to switch though :)
I'm whelmed at best. What Canon giveth with one hand, the cr!pple hammer taketh away with the other. The one thing that looked good, rolling shutter was very well controlled at least in stills using ES. Canon said it was faster read speed than R6, but how much faster R6 was about 1/50s in 12 bit, this looks like it could be faster than 1/60s, maybe 1/70-1/80s. That is mile better than A7IV's 1/30s in which ES is unusable for action.
That background wobbling is horrible. Can anyone explain what is going on? I don't understand how that's acceptable in any way for someone considering this camera for videography purposes.
In the video, what is with the wobble of the background- especially with jordan talkiing in front of the pool hall at 7 minutes. Back and forth side to side wobble of the whole hall behind him. I found it very distracting.
Ah, it was covered later in the video. It's a Canon thing.
Even though not a huge upgrade, but R6 II is a nice welcome, just in time I need a second body. Separate Photo/Video switch is great features as I'm a hybrid user. I'm glad that R6 II still use SD card ( I don't need expensive CFexpress card).
Great video. Would be interesting to see more testing of that rolling shutter. The camera can obviously be used for sports in ES mode, but to what extent? If it can be used reliably, then it gives stacked sensors a run for the money. Canon did a good job on that front with this new sensor.
It is somewhat disappointing that quirks found in the R6 in video mode were not adressed ( camera not returning to previous settings , focus not sticking to your subject , wobbling ). Jordan seems less than impressed ....I guess those could be addressed by firmware but they haven't so far...
My takeaway on this upgrade: faster sensor readout allowing usable ES fast action stills & coupled with 40fps ES. We need to understand the readout limits though.
yup, this focus video AF loose even in static scenes & AF pumping is BIG dissapointment for video + no histogram and sound level in recording. These issues means for me no buy. So I am waiting for Z6III now.
Thanks for an excellent overview. Incremental relevant improvements, although some more on the video side wouldn't hurt. But still obviously an excellent camera.
Come on canon. This is not an upgrade. Everything’s pretty much the same as the original! Like we need to shoot 40fps 😆Just a silly marketing ploy. 👎👎 I’ll stick with my Z9 thanks. (And no, I’m not a Nikon fan boy)
The new sensor looks like a significant upgrade to me. 25% more pixels and a very good electronic shutter performance are significant - plus they seem very competetive regarding battery life. Of course these are not essential, but they are significant improvements - The old model worked fine, but then I am stilll proud of shots I took 15 years ago on a 6MP CCD sensor - but for preference I'd take more MP and a more modern sensor.
R6 mark ii already? Usually they wait a few years for the updates in that camera segment.
Was there... complaints about the mark i that prompted the update? The obvious thing i can see is the sensor even though it wasn't bad, just not matching some specs of other cameras. This new sensor rectifies that, mostly, though still a bit dated.
Maybe Canon didn't want to create a new speedy camera line so that updated the R6 to take up that role?
R6 was still selling quite well in published sales rankings, so I doubt it was motivated by anything from the demand side.
My speculation follows. Canon put the R6 on the market in 2020 because they had to have something cheaper than the R5 but more modern than the R. Having had no resource to develop two new full-frame sensors, they built a new one for the R5, and cribbed the one from 1D X III for the R6. Given that background, it is not unreasonable to speculate that the R6 sensor, being originally intended for a flagship, was expensive to make relative to the R6's price. Now, finally, they have had time to make a dedicated mid-range (read: cheaper) sensor, and can afford to ditch the recycled 1DX sensor.
Another speculation: now that they got rid of R6, they can throw out the corresponding sensor fab line altogether if they discontinue the 1DX III. Does this mean an R1 is around the corner...?
