M & M: Leica SL Typ 601 real-world gallery updated with M-series lens samples

The Leica SL Typ 601 is the German manufacturer's first foray into the full-frame mirrorless world, offering a 24MP CMOS sensor in a weather-sealed, milled-aluminum body. Three SL lenses have been introduced for the system, but an M-mount adapter opens up a number of possibilities for the camera. We took advantage of some limited time to shoot with the SL and the Summilux-M 35mm F1.4 ASPH and 50mm F1.4 - see what the combination looks like. Read more

Go big: Leica SL studio and real-world sample gallery

Leica has just unveiled its first full-frame mirrorless ILC, the SL Type 601. The new camera uses a modified version of the 24MP CMOS sensor from the Leica Q in tandem with a Maestro II processor, allowing ISO 50-50,000 shooting, 4K video recording and 11 fps continuous shooting. With early access to a full production SL, we've been able to test it against our studio test scene as well as in a variety of real-world shooting conditions. Read more

Wide lens, right price? Nikon 24mm F1.8G ED real-world samples

Earlier this year Nikon expanded a series of F1.8 primes with the 24mm F1.8G ED, sitting alongside 20mm and 35mm models. Compact and lightweight, it hits a $750 price point that's relatively reasonable, considering the F1.4 version retails for over $2000. DxO ONE real-world sample gallery

The DxO ONE is a clever little iPhone companion camera with a 20MP 1"-type sensor and 32mm equiv. F1.8 lens. With an integrated Lightning connector it's designed to be used while attached to an iPhone or iPad, and is an easily transported little device offering a big boost in image quality over a mobile device's integrated camera. Canon EOS M3 real-world samples

The Canon EOS M3 has been available in European and Asian markets for some time, but it's making its debut on US store shelves next month. The M3 is Canon's most serious mirrorless camera yet, offering a 24.2MP APS-C sensor, twin control dials, 3" tilting LCD and built-in Wi-Fi with NFC. Crazy 8: Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX8 sample gallery

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX8 is the follow-up to the company's successful GX7 rangefinder-style mirrorless camera. The GX8 boasts a new 20MP Four Thirds sensor and 'Dual IS', which combines sensor and lens shift image stabilization for better results. The camera's ISO range tops out at 25,600 and it offers a max burst rate of 10 fps with single AF and 6 fps with continuous AF. Last night the Northern Lights tip-toed farther south than they usually do, and many regions of North America not accustomed to seeing them were treated to a light show. In hopes of catching it we hopped in the car with the Canon EOS 5DSR and headed away from the city lights. Canon EF 50mm F1.8 STM real-world samples gallery

The EF 50mm F1.8 STM is Canon's newest iteration of its classic 'nifty fifty' lens. It's a fast, inexpensive normal lens on a full frame DSLR, but also functions as an 80mm equivalent lens on Canon's APS-C bodies. How does it perform in real-world use?  We've been using the lens for a few days and put together a gallery of samples. With a close focus distance of just 0.15m/6in. and a fast F1.4 aperture, this lens is super versatile. In our sample testing we found it to be sharp, and to offer pleasing bokeh. Canon EOS Rebel T6s/T6i real-world sample galleries posted

Canon announced the EOS Rebel T6s and T6i (760D/750D) near-twins in February, and they've garnered plenty of attention since then. They share the same 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor, 19-point AF system, and a new 7560 pixel RGB + IR metering sensor, while their differences are mainly in the user experience. Nikon's Coolpix P900 offers a 16MP sensor and a mind-blowing F2.8-6.5 24-2000mm equivalent zoom. It features built-in Wi-Fi with NFC, 7 fps burst shooting, built-in EVF and a fully articulated LCD. The P900 also uses a new Dual Detect optical image stabilization system, claiming up to 5 stops of shake compensation. We've been shooting with it for a few days. See gallery

Panasonic Lumix DMC-CM1 real-world sample gallery posted

Panasonic's Lumix CM1 has the potential to break new ground in the territory between smartphones and cameras. It offers a 1-inch 20MP sensor, much larger than the typical smartphone camera chip. It also provides an F2.8 Leica-branded lens encircled by a control ring that can be used to adjust various exposure settings. We got out and about with it to see what its images look like. Lensbaby Velvet 56mm f/1.6 real-world sample gallery posted

The latest from Lensbaby, the Velvet 56mm f/1.6, is designed to bring soft, dream-like effects to portraiture. It also provides a minimum focus distance of 5 inches for macro work. It's by no means cheap for what it offers at $499.95, but for some photographers will offer the ability to capture soft focus effects in-camera rather than through processing. Sony FE 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS real-world samples posted

In theory, Sony's FE 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS all-in-one zoom is an ideal candidate for travel photography with one of the company's a7-series. Nikon D7200 real-world samples gallery posted

The Nikon D7200 improves over its predecessor in one important way, offering a greatly improved buffer. Other improvements are more subtle, but more sensitive AF and an improved video specification make the D7200 a more capable camera than the model which came before it. We've had a D7200 for a few days, and wasted no time pairing it with Sigma's excellent 18-35mm F1.8 A to get some real-world samples. Click through to see more

[UPDATED] Can we get much wider? Canon EF 11-24mm F4 L USM samples gallery posted

[UPDATED] We were curious to see how the new Canon 11-24 F4 performed on a high resolution sensor, so we've updated our gallery with some landscapes and aperture progressions taken on a 36MP Sony a7R with a Metabones adapter. Though performance at extremes of the frame may not be representative of that on a native body, the 11-24 doesn't disappoint. Aloha! We go shooting with Samsung's new NX500 [UPDATED]

UPDATED: We just added several images to this gallery, converted from raw. The Samsung NX500 is essentially a scaled down version of Samsung's flagship NX1. It uses the same 28MP BSI-CMOS sensor, advanced hybrid AF system, and a version of the same DRIMe V processor. The main differences are the form factor (resembling a rangefinder rather than an SLR), burst mode (9 vs 15 fps), and viewfinder (none vs electronic). We've been using a production NX500 for a couple of days, and we've put together a gallery of real-world samples. Click through for the updated gallery

First images from upcoming Samsung S 300mm f/2.8 ED OIS

It hasn't even entered production yet, but Samsung's S 300mm f/2.8 ED OIS telephoto lens is certainly shaping up to be a very nice addition to the NX line. We were fortunate enough to be allowed access to a pre-production engineering sample of this new lens for a few hours. Nikon D5500 real-world samples

A slight update to the D5300, the Nikon D5500 is a midrange DX-format that sports a 24MP CMOS sensor with no optical low-pass filter (OLPF) and the company's latest Expeed 4 processor. This combination offers an ISO range of 100-25600 and 5 fps burst shooting, while the 39-point AF system can track subjects in '3D'. Sony Zeiss Distagon T* FE 35mm F1.4 ZA real-world samples gallery posted

Sony announced three new FE primes yesterday, including a 28 f/2, a 35mm f/1.4 and a 90mm f/2.8 macro. We got our hands on the Zeiss Distagon T* FE 35mm f/1.4 and shot with it around Seattle. It features a 9-blade circular aperture and a Direct Drive SSM focus system. Check out our samples gallery
