Corbis Images content to be distributed by Getty

Getty Images is set to become the exclusive distributor of content from its rival, Corbis Images, after a deal in which Corbis was sold to a Chinese company that has a partnership with the Getty agency. Unity Glory, an affiliate of media business Visual China Group, has bought the assets and brands of Corbis Images for an undisclosed sum. Getty Images will represent the Corbis content in all territories outside China, as the two companies have worked together for over ten years to share content. Read more

In March, stock photography house Getty Images rocked the industry when it announced it would allow people to embed images for free on websites and other electronic uses. Clearly looking to monetize the vast collection of images currently gathering digital dust in its archives, it has launched Photos.com by Getty Images to sell prints directly to customers. Learn more

Call for entries: Getty Images grants

Getty Images has announced a call for entries for its Getty Grants, a series of photographic grants for editorial and portrait photographers totaling $130,000 (~£77,737). To celebrate the 10-year anniversary of its grant program, Getty Images is offering six prizes for editorial photography, three creative grants for non-profits and individual photographers, and one for portrait photographers. Learn more

Getty and Flickr to cease partnership

Getty is back in the news, announcing in an email to contributors that its near 6-year partnership with Flickr has has ended, and will not be renewed. In the letter, Getty stresses the fact that the partnership has been terminated does not affect existing contributors' contracts, and the Flickr Collection will form the the basis of a new 'house collection' on Getty's site called 'Moment'. Getty to allow embedding for 'non-commercial use' of images

Getty Images has taken a major step towards addressing unauthorized image use by allowing low resolution embedding of images for no charge, with no watermark, on non-commercial 'blogs and social media'. Admitting that combatting widespread unauthorized image use by the world's Internet users is impractical, Getty is pitching the new embedding service, which is available for more than 35 million photographs as a legal alternative to image theft. Getty Images' Flickr licensing deal reaches 1/2 million images

Getty Images' scheme for licensing images from the photo sharing site Flickr has added its 500,000th image. The half-millionth image was shot by system engineer and photo hobbyist 'Jiangang Wang' for Tianjin, China, of the Minato Mirai development in Yokohama, Japan. The licensing deal, started in June 2010, allows Flickr members to offer their images for licensing by Getty. If Getty chooses to accept the request, the photographer can choose how to license their images, at rates comparable to Getty's other images libraries.

Getty Images bought by management and Carlyle Group for $3.3bn

Photo library and licensing giant Getty Images is to be bought by its founders and investment company The Carlyle Group for $3.3bn. They will buy-out existing private equity firm Hellman & Friedman, which purchased Getty for $2.4bn four years ago. Carlyle, one of the world's largest private equity companies, will gain a controlling share of the company, while co-founders Mark Getty and Jonathan Klein, along with the Getty family, will also increase their stakes in the business.
