I don't want to be a big jerk, but the gallery of the a1 camera should be full of bird photography or sports photography. Everything shown here could be taken with a camera mounted with a manual lens and shoots only at 1/30fps.

They actually do have a lot of bird images: 5, 92, 94 and 98, 101, 111, 124

in the gallery, it felt like a capta, find the birds! more than I expected.

Not quite exciting BIF, none are actually flying... but hey they are professional camera reviewers so give them a break.

Actually, would it be hard to bring a bag of bred to a city park and get some pigeons in flight? Come on, indoor soccer, basketball, bating cages or something with action?

Color and render wise Canon is a much more pleasant system, no doubt. At least I was very pleased to return to Canon after a brief affair with the a7 series. I guess the whole point of this camera is its sheer speed, processing power and AF capabilities.

I've used Canon, Olympus, Sony over the last 15 years and find them similar enough that it isn't an issue. Lenses yes, sensors? It's so hard to define. For example I found the Sony 35mm 2.8 dull but put on the 24mm gm and its punchy and contrasty.

Nice shots, great camera. Would I buy that camera? No. Would I like to have it? Yes, of coarse. But because I am in on another system that delivers great results too it makes no sense to invest thousands of €$ to step over. Expanding the picture to 100% of this young girl in the snow I notice exactly the same kind of aberrations in the OOF areas as I see on my 36 MP DSLR with a 40 years old film era prime screwed on it. For normal daily enthusiastic use like I do the cameras produced 5 - 10 years ago deliver everything I need... That is the main reason of the shrinking market nowadays I think. The boost in progression is not present anymore. But nevertheless, the A1 seems a superb camera.

I find it funny, that so many here post that their camera XX can shoot the same pictures. Such lines used to read "no different to a smartphone".

Why is there an expectation that the significant increase in price compared to their camera will result linearly in a similar increase in image quality? That hasn't been the case for years. Even my dated A6000 delivers stellar image quality in good light and coupled with sharp lenses. The difference start on pixel peeping level: chroma noise, accuracy of AWB and that stuff.

Higher price tag in the last years didn't result in better IQ, it resulted in performance areas like better AF, AF tracking, startup times, eye/bird AF, silent shutter introduction, 4kvideo, etc.

The A1 only has now also pushed to the end of THAT alley of potential improvement.

Anyone looking for massive improvements in IQ should redirect his funds towards lenses because THAT is where IQ improvements have occured!

In APSC the Sigmar trio, the 1655 and now the 1770 f2.8 zooms were introduced, all delivering stellar IQ compared to the bread-and-butter lenses of the past.

In FF, Tamron has introduced the 2875 70180 and 1628 f2.8 affordable, light-weight and sharp zooms.

The sad news is, if you already have lenses on that level, you will be stuck and it will be only your responsibility if your images still lack that special thing.

I would love to see an image shot with silent shutter and a studio strobe. This is something that I am very excited to see and can't wait to use. Hopefully the next generation will be a stop faster. A global shutter at 1/500 would really open up creative potentials.

Formally the world dominated by medium format (lenses that have shutters in them) you can flash sync at any speed. Not the gimmick HSS but lighting people from 15' or so away takes too much power. With just a one stop faster shutter speed the flash becomes immediately twice as powerful. If I had a global shutter at all shutter speeds I could use a smaller flash and if I wanted easily overpower the sun using the sun as fill and the flash as key. Think of all the possibilities ;-)

These shots aren’t from Sony. DPR isn’t trying to promote anything. They are just trying to share some output from the camera. Take it for what it’s worth. If you come away from this gallery thinking this is all the camera is capable of I would suggest you widen your search for information. DPR is a great photography site but there are other sources of credible information as well and you would be wise to check more than one before deciding how to spend your money.

All of my shots in the gallery are with the 35 GM, shot mostly at F1.4, and I don't see any offensive swirly bokeh or magenta fringing; only a very slight - and very acceptable and non-distracting (considering 50MP resolution) - amount of green fringing behind the focal plane. Cats eye / mechanical vignetting is - in my opinion - fairly well controlled with this lens, and mostly disappears by F2, after which you have a very, er, circular circle of confusion thanks to the 11-blade aperture.

Do you have any links to particular images?

That said, I absolutely don't discount the magenta fringing issue. While I don't see it in this particular gallery, I do see it in our 35mm GM gallery, for example here. It seems to pop up sometimes in wide open shots at very high contrast boundaries at the focal plane.

A Owens, good catch, but to put things in perspective:

The magenta fringing is only conspicuous to my (trained) eye when I stand 8" from a 20" x 30" print of that photo. (0.2x viewing distance)
Again, it's only visible in a manner that'd catch my eye (but not bother me - meaning it's not egregious) if I stand 16-24" from a 40" x 60" of that photo. (0.2x - 0.3x viewing distance)
Two clicks of the defringe tool & I can't see any purple or green fringing even 6", less than 0.1x viewing distance, away from a 40" x 60" print of that photo (there's a bit of green fringing left in the unzipped zipper up top viewable at that distance, but that's it)

That's not to say the defringe tool is a panacea - it's not. If there's enough LoCA, by the time the defringe tool does its job you've desaturated other portions of your image. But so far the fringing has been subtle enough w/ the 35GM that I haven't had to broaden the scope of the defringe tool to a point where this has been an issue.

DPreview defending sony by calling out the defringe tool. Wow. There's green fringing all over the place (stars on her jacket in that same pic, edges of flower petals in image 14, etc. etc.) but hey, it has "sony" written on it, so it's all good.

Speaking for myself: I made some pretty strong contrast, curves and tone adjustments on my shots (though not as much as I'd make for client delivery back when I shot weddings, engagements and portraits). So you should be able to get some idea of how the noise, detail and texture holds up, in ACR anyway.

Pros who use the 1DX3 or D6 for their specific function may continue to value the features and benefits of these cameras over the possible benefits of the A1. What problem is it solving for them? The A1 looks expensive compared to the R5. It is 71% MORE expensive for mainly marginal gains.....

This is the features A1 users pay for (and A9II users), and what makes the A1 a more powerful tool than the high end Nikon and Canon models. Professionals at this level are not interested in the slow 1/60 rolling shutter readout when shooting fast bursts and other issues that plague the R5.

The R5 is a very nice camera for serious amateur photographers and professionals that do not shoot fast burst of fast moving subjects, and who do not need fast file transfer or don't do live video publishing.

Actully, I don't quite understand how people can compare the R5 with the A1. These cameras are way more than 8K.

One could argue that image quality is not the biggest differentiator between cameras these days, and even if it were, the Raw converter is a huge variable (personally, I would not process Sony Raw files using ACR for my personal work, for example).

For the kind of photos in this gallery, a Fujifilm GFX100S would be the better choice (OK, except for the bird ones with the 200-600). The A1 can of course take photos of moving subjects that would leave the medium-format grasping at ghosts. What actually impressed me with this gallery was how good is the 24-105/4 all-purpose zoom. It did as well as any of the primes, and I preferred its rendering than some of them.

The GFX100S comparison is unfair because for these type of shots it better than any FF Camera when it comes to detail.

If all you’re looking to do with this camera is walkabout shots or portraits the A7RIV or even A7RIII would be practically as effective and a lot cheaper. I don’t think the Fuji would do well at a basketball game.

Thoughts R Us

Different tools for different jobs. If you don't need the high frame rate for your photography, then other options are available depending on needs/wants/budget.

If you do have this camera and use it for action and high speed movement, then you can certainly use it for these other types of photography as well, like walkabout, portrait, etc.

The Fuji is getting a lot of comparison with this a1 due to it having a similar price and announced at the same time, but they are different tools. But sure, for ultimate IQ for still or slower moving subjects, the Fuji GFX 100s will be a better option.

Many on the forums seem to compare the a1 with the GFX 100s, due to the reasons noted: similar announcement time and price. So they are getting maximum attention at about the same time and they just happen to be in the same price category.

Now whether one agrees with that or not, is a different matter. It is a bit silly IMHO to use that as criteria, because they are different tools. But that doesn't mean that it hasn't happened. Even not agreeing with that, it is understandable why some are doing it.

The Fuji is $500 cheaper.. with that said, 5fps hasn't been enough to shoot sport since what, the '00s? There's no question of which tool is more appropriate for someone shooting sports as a means of collecting a paycheck.

Since I don't do that, however, if it were an option financially I would save the $500 and double my megapixels :-D

There was talk of this comparison even before we knew what Sony was announcing. These two cameras are only being compared because they were announced a day apart.

It’s kind-of like the comparisons to the R5. The people who say “I don’t know why people are comparing the A1 to the R5” are the ones comparing the A1 to the R5. It’s disingenuous. Although I give TRU credit for not bringing it up here.

For the complainers - stop being rude and go out there and rent one for yourself when it is available. And take your own personal testshots in the evironments you are used to. Only then will it matter. DPR is testing the camera and give you RAW samples for free. Enjoy it.

I would be shocked if DPR doesn't absolutely love the comments, especially all the back and forth arguing. DPR earns ALL of their money on page hits. If you read the article, you give them a few page hits. If you complain and argue back and forth in the comments you give them 10x the page hits. I'm sure they sit back and laugh at all the complaining on their way to the bank.

DPR site is very brand centric. Every article is about a brand's new product or how products from a few brands compare, and one is better. This leads to the mine is better than yours mentality. DPR knows that, they play to that, and they cash in on that. Just look at the stupid gold vs silver crap.

It may drive you away, but when a new camera comes out, it is like a car crash. You can't help but to look, and come back for more page hits.

I'm sure they wish everyone in the world was nice and rainbows and unicorns. however, they still cash the check at the end of the day.

Frankly, for a camera like that I would expect a real shoot, done by a pro photog with models and lighting. No disrespect for your children, but this camera need someone to really test it, both behind and in front of the camlera. In addition, a ball game and some flying birds would be of the order, so that we can see why this camera is worth 3 times the price of a D850!

At these viewing sizes (32" 4K here) and web resolutions, pretty much any modern camera is indistinguishable from any other, excepting the more obvious differences in color rendering and lens characteristics.

The pictures of Bellevedere or of the farm could have been taken with a $600 E-M10 IV and on the web they'd look just as good.. not a dig on the Sony, just a statement of how good pretty much all modern cameras are for the regular walk around use depicted in this gallery. I could do this with my Fuji, you could do it with your Canon.

Now, when lockdown ends and we can shoot sports and concerts again.. then the differences will become much more apparent!

Samples are totally missing the point. An a7r3 (or frankly, an iPhone 12) would have no issues taking any of those photos. You're not going to buy an a1 because you need to take photos of a dog or a barn. You're going to buy it because you shoot sports. Because you are a serious birder. Because you are in one of those jobs that relies on a camera every day.

I beg you, just lend the camera to a sports photographer for a few days. Have them send you back some photos that would actually represent what the a1 can do.

I wasn't gatekeeping the possible uses of the a1. I was asking for samples that utilized the *specific advantages* the camera has over literally any other camera on the market. Imagine reviewing a supercar by taking it out for groceries and not doing a track day. Yes - it can go 30mph just fine. That's not what we're here for.

With that said, if you shoot primarily barns and dogs and you buy an a1, you made a bad decision.

The price of the camera does not refelect the skills of the photographer.

Unfortunately, some would say.

Nice with a powerful camera, though, since good tools can make things a bit easier.

Since this article is about the gallery and only that, I'd say the images are very competitive with the A7Riii, though the A7Riii might have the smallest of advantages at higher ISOs. Needless to say, even today the A7Riii is a very good camera.
