Fujifilm XF 18mm F1.4 R WR pre-production sample gallery

We've been shooting for a few days with a pre-production copy of Fujifilm's new XF 18mm F1.4 R WR lens, which offers a 27mm full-frame equivalent field of view, and optically, we're impressed. It offers excellent sharpness wide open, minimal distortion, and good control of flaring and aberrations; The sunstars at F16 are quite nice, too.

Additionally, this 18mm is fast-to-focus (it uses linear AF motor), weather-sealed, and reasonably compact and lightweight. In short, for $1,000, it's a tempting little prime lens.

Fuji's IQ is not better, no way. Sony's 28/F2 is one of the sharpest lenses ever made by Sony. Contrast, colors are great too. And the price. ;)

But the lens performs well.
Too expensive for what is in my opinion.
The 35 1.4 outshines this one, but that is a different view.

Good optical performance but a bit pricey for an APS-C lens. Very little or no lens flare. Nice star burst effect.

The problem is, this comment is always made with other brands in mind, and not the brand who’s camera this lens is made for.

It’s not ‘an APS-C lens’ in the sense you describe, this is Fuji’s system, so their focus is on providing the best quality they can for this system with little compromise.

How much is an 18mm F1.4 prime for other systems?

If you are comparing equivalent apertures and equivalent focal lengths, the price of the lens should be the same, and the weight should also be the same for a similar optical design. The crop factor becomes irrelevant. The 50-140 f2.8 should compare with a 70-200 f4. Every time I actually compared, Fuji was good value compared to Sony. It usually outperforms the equivalent.

In this case, the equivalent is the Sony 28mm f2, a very simple optical design that has no weather sealing. It's very affordable, but I would gladly pay twice as much for a decent image and some peace of mind.

You absolutely can’t do that though, you are talking nonsense. Literally the only difference between an F1.4 lens on one system to the other is the projected image circle out of the back of the lens, which in the case of 35mm systems would mean a slightly larger design to allow that. Otherwise manufacturers have to design the optics to pass light through an F1.4 opening.... people need to stop spouting this nonsense.

Fujifilm haven’t developed their f2.8 lenses on the basis that it’s actually f4.... do you realise how incredibly stupid that whole comment sounds, these are physical measurements that are calculated using fixed values, so an 18mm F1.4 lens will be compared to an 18mm F1.4 lens on other systems, because that is how physics works.

I get the argument of wanting to know what system permits taking equivalent images. In the end it's all about creating the image, isn't it? This is made up not only of equivalent focal length and aperture but also image quality: sharpness, aberrations, distortion, color transmission, flare, sun stars and all that; and also the process of creation: compactness, sturdiness, user interface. That's exactly where the lesser FF cameras and lenses fall behind and where the equivalent higher tier Fujifilm cameras and lenses shine, at similar price points. So the OP gave the answer right there, this is a great lens for the price, who cares about sensor size?

And that is fair enough Drew, but people on here are making this stupid assumption that F1.4 lenses on APS-C cameras should somehow meet the same manufacturing costs as narrower, smaller aperture lenses on other systems, does anyone think that Fujifilm lens engineers sit in their lab looking at a 28mm f2.8 lens for guidance on how to design an 18mm F1.4 one?

The f4 on full frame is not narrower than the f2.8 on crop factor cameras as you claim. It's the same size. You need to understand what (absolute) aperture is before commenting on these matters.

You misunderstood his point. If the actual (not equivalent) FL is the same, then f/4 is certainly a narrower aperture than f/2.8. Lenses with the same physical dimensions, and lenses that produce equivalent photos are different things.

The fact that equivalent lenses have the same real aperture sizes but different focal lengths tells you immediately that you can't just scale lenses up and down to create equivalent lenses. You need a completely new lens design. The point that Fujifilm users are making is that their lens quality is often higher, as they represent the top tier in that market, whereas FF F1.8 lenses are often built to a lower standard intentionally - as second-tier products in order to lead customers toward expensive F1.4 profit-makers. This makes the argument "just buy FF to pay the same or less for the equivalent bokeh" actually a downgrade path, with a more cumbersome gear bag, lower quality bodies and lenses with lower image quality, which many quality-conscious Fujifilm users are not willing to take. FF only makes sense over Fujifilm if you're willing to buy the $3k+ flagship bodies and $2k+ flagship lenses.

I have no skin in the game regarding Fuji lenses being better quality, I’m a believer that all systems are producing amazing products.

My point was purely from a design perspective, in that an 18mm F1.4 lens will be hard to construct and expensive regardless of the system it’s being used on.

Guys this is not how optics work and there is nothing subjective about them.

When you are comparing lenses it only makes sense to compare them when they are doing the same job, in other words, the angle of coverage of the scene must be the same, and the subject must be at the same position. When you achieve this on formats using different sensor sizes, the absolute aperture is the same and the amount of glass is actually similar if the design in terms of elements and groups is similar.

An f2.8 is actually an f/2.8 and the absolute aperture is the same. It's presented in this format so that you can have the same exposure with different focal lengths, not because its the physical reality of the lens design. It's photography language, not physics. All your f2.8 lenses can expose at the same settings, but only because the physical aperture was translated to photographic terms and presented to f-stops.

When you are comparing lenses, the crop factor is irrelevant if the angle of coverage and the physical aperture is the same. If a lens is cheaper than another that matches these two parameters, you will find that the lens design is actually different, one has far fewer elements and groups, less special lenses in the assembly, inferior mechanical construction, weather sealing, different type and amount of motors etc.

When you are comparing lenses, convert focal length and aperture. This levels the field in terms of optics. Then check the lens design and the extra features it may have.

The sensor size is a tiny part of the lens design. It's merely a projection to a specific distance. In the distance if sqrt(2) larger in width and height, the image will be darker in photographic terms, but the sensor will probably be a stop better in noise, so that levels the field. ISO1600 on full frame will generally have the noise of iso800 on crop factor sensor, so f4 vs f2.8 is not a problem.

The cost is actually the same for similar quality. F2.8 full frame is more expensive than f2.8, but it uses a lot more glass to achieve the larger physical aperture. This explains the cost difference. One should compare at the same angle and physical aperture, so f4 should be compared with f2.8. Then, the cost is similar. The size and weight is also similar for same quality and design, because the sensor size is irrelevant when the angle of coverage and the absolute aperture is the same.

And if you want to compare lenses, try using the f2.8 zooms on Fuji. I have all three of them. The 50-140 is constant aperture. The 8-16 is not, you get an audible aperture click in the middle of the zoom range. The 16-55 is far from constant aperture You actually get 3 audible aperture clicks when zooming from one end to the other. The lenses want to appear as constant T-stop but they are not doing a very good job.

Each lens is unique and Fuji make good lenses for the cost, but they have their flaws compared to the competition. They also have their advantages. All manufacturers have good and bad lenses in the lines.

Regardless of all that you have written, the manufacturing costs of an 18mm f1.4 lens has to be compared to the manufacturing costs of an 18mm f1,4 lens on another system, not a 28mm f2.8 lens, because the optics needed for an 18mm f1.4 lens are vastly different to those of an f2.8 28mm lens.... no matter how you try and bulls--t it to say otherwise.

I have never heard an 'audible aperture click' on the 16-55 lens, not once in 3 years of using it so i have no idea what you are talking about.

Or lets put it another way, do you think Fujifilm have purposefully made this lens larger and more expensive than it needs to be? using some basic common sense (that isnt that common amongst people like you unfortunately) what possible reasons would they have for doing both of those things? to purposefully reduce the amount of sales?

Or is it simply that they wanted to create an optic that is fast in aperture and built to the highest quality standards?

Lets be honest they know what they are doing, as their vast line of high end broadcast and cinema lenses prove, that are used pretty much universally in film and TV studios across the globe.

Optics are really simple, the focal length is the distance from the sensor where the light converges and the aperture is the size of the iris opening calculated as a ratio of that focal length.

Since the release of the 16/2.8, a Mk II of the 18/2.0 seemed unlikely - even if it would be a very desirable lens, indeed.

It appears Fuji is really highlighting the linear motor as a benefit of this lens, which is not something they would have been able to fit into an 18/2.0 - at least not at the price point and in a lens as compact as the older 18/2.0.

My Fuji sometimes is horrible when photographing against direct sunlight. Nikon is much better - I rarely get this flaring there.

This is the signature of any highly corrected (low distortion, low CA) lens with many refractive surfaces. Older, less sophisticated lenses like Fujifilm's 18mm pancake don't have that. Horses for courses. Incidentally it has nothing to do with mirrorless or not, at the moment the image is recorded, a DSLR looks just like a mirrorless with a longer flange distance, where the same effect can happen. The only difference to other brands is that some reviewers push the gear harder with many shots into the sun, at high contrasting patterns, and blown out backgrounds, while other sample galleries are mostly hot models in the shade in front of darker backgrounds (see for example Canon R 85mm image gallery which isn't a test, it's an advertorial).

Wow. This looks like a real winner. Maybe the best wide angle Fuji lens – based on this sample gallery, of course.

Sharpness edge to edge and even into the corners is outstanding even wide open and at f/2 it's basically as good as you could ask for. Bokeh is surprisingly good. Very nice sunstars, flare seems well controlled most of the time - the last photo is actually sensor flare. The photo five images back from that one only shows the faintest hint of ghost flare in the upper left (and a bizarre purple orb flare at the bottom).

This looks like a killer lens for 28mm equiv. fans. Between this and the 70-300, I've been very impressed with Fuji's releases lately.

Looks like an impressive lens, also for astro photography. Is there any reason to take the 23f2 over this one? In other words, what's the benefit of a 35mm equivalent lens to a 27mm?

Wider angle lenses are usually preferred for astro, at least if you're including some landscape. One advantage is you can do longer exposures before the rotation of the earth starts to blur stars.

Also, the 23/2 is nowhere near this level of quality. Plus, this is a stop faster, a big advantage for astro.

I'd absolutely get this over the 23, particularly if astro is your primary goal (or even just a secondary goal).

Also, the best investment for astro is a star tracker like iOptron SkyGuider Pro or Skywatcher Star Adventurer, they cost half the price of this new Fuji lens and will enable you to also use slower lenses for your astro photography.

@Robert yes, that's true, but 1) we have no idea what level of investment they want to make specifically into astro equipment. Buying a lens is something that can be used for a multitude of purposes. and 2) those astrotrackers aren't exactly super portable.

But if you're serious about astro, then yeah, you want to get one.
