Oceans and redwoods: Nikon Z6 II sample gallery update

The Z6 II is Nikon's mid-range full-frame mirrorless camera, and as it turns out, it makes for a great travel kit when paired with a couple of Z-mount lenses. Check out some of the highlights from a coastal road trip in our updated sample gallery – though, this being the coast, the weather didn't always cooperate. At least the camera's weather-sealed.

Does eye-AF work reliably with a mask? Especially the one with many black spots on it. I know Nikon cameras are very enthusiastically looking for eyes finding them in various funny places.

I hope this isn't too snide, but I must say that I don't often tend to accost strangers to pose for portraits while I'm on a personal vacation. Maybe I would a few years ago, but what can I say, I'm getting old.

Would more diversity in terms of subjects be great? Of course. Is it always practical? Unfortunately, it isn't. Especially when we still have a bit of work to do on the whole pandemic thing.

The bridge is narrow and maybe it is hard to socially distance at the entrance. Think about it.

As someone affected by Covid with a relative who died too young and a sibling with enduring after effects, your post is ignorant.

It’s just a mask. I simply don’t understand why some people are so triggered by a simple piece of fabric or paper. It’s no hardship to wear one and they are a useful prophylactic.

@tirmite - Aside from what Daft Punk said, we had no interest in making a stink and being kicked out of an experience we paid for because we couldn't suck it up and put some cloth over our faces for a couple of hours. It is a forest, yes, but it's a private attraction on private property and there are rules that are there for a reason.

What I'm impressed with with these Z-lenses, is their clarity.

Everything in those pictures just stand out, the colors, the vibrant, the sharpness, the contrast, the bokeh and even the unsharp parts in all its purity.

Some say these lenses are to clinical in thier rendering of the world, but I say they just show the world as it would be seen, if you just dared open your eyes.

...As a Sony user I hate it when all you hear about is their bad "color science".
-But, Damn. Great. Color. Here.
-There's a warm (but accurate) subtlety. Even the contrast seems smoother if you know what I mean.
Anyway, I got too many lenses to switch and there's no such thing as cheap Z glass (yet)!

Sony tuned their cameras differently through the years. They are not all the same when it comes to color. A big change happened in the third generation, which made default rendition of some colors better but other worse.
I have Nikon Z6, Sony A7Rii, and A7iii and I can pleasing colors and tonality from all of them. Nikon usually have better WB, it errs on reddish side, while Sony often shifts to orange, but you can adjust all that in LR. Because of that Nikon is easier to work with, though my favorite is still Sony A7Rii, you can get fantastic colors and resolution from that camera.

I love the colors my Z7 and Z6 produce. I also loved the colors my old Sony DSC-F828 produced with it's four-color (RGBE) sensor. My only gripe about that camera was the tendency for purple fringing. The Z cameras color rendition remind me a lot of my old Cybershot.

Having just purchased a Z7 mk2 I can’t recommend the Nikon enough. The autofocus is always spot on the the colours straight from the camera are gorgeous and I shoot for twelve hours on one battery . So if the Z6 mk2. Is the same I will happily buy one as a second camera . The Z lenses are amazing as well . I tried so many different cameras before I got the Z7 mk2 . Very pleased with the Z system .

The ones with integrated AF motor - they mostly work. Z cameras like to move focus motor more often that DSLRs, so older AF-S lenses tend to operate noisier than on DSLRs. Depending on how you shoot, the foot of the FTZ can be inconvenient sometimes. Using old primes with IBIS - great!

It’s 2021. Do we really need “reminding” that some people are still dealing with COVID-19? It’s literally been in our faces for well over a year now. Frankly I’m quite tired of the virtue-signaling in photos and ads. If we are ALLOWED to remove masks to eat for several minutes then surely the Karen Police would allow a few seconds for a photograph. Maybe the subject can hold her/his breath for 10 seconds so the forest creatures don’t catch any germs. 🤣

Interesting set of photos for lens evaluation. I still didn't moved to Z so I still try to decide on my lens selection. I wish 35 S will have the IQ of 50 S, that will make everything a lot more simple. But 35 S has it's own character, I even tried it once, It looks like DSLR lenses on steroids to me. It's sharper. But it has it's limitations. Like if you want sharpness wide open for full body portrait, you should put meaningful parts of the image (face etc.) dead center. For bigger magnifications wide open you can use all frame exept extreme corners (the skin textures are bigger and you don't need all the sharpness in the world). From F2.2-2.6 you see the bump in IQ, and from F2.8 it's razor sharp. Not an easy lens to work with. And a good combo with 85 S. The bokeh is gorgeous though.

The Z6II is a wonderful camera and I am rediscovering the 35mm f1.8 S also.

I had somehow kept a lukewarm memory of it’s rendering but it in fact is very very nice. I wonder whether that may have been affected by the IBIS/shutter of the Z6? Anyway, it’s splendid on the Z6II and Z7II.

I have the Z6 and I sometimes wonder if the IBIS implementation causes issues like that. I feel like my D750 was sharper but then I get some shots that are razor sharp. I turn IBIS off on bright days.

The 35 1.8 is a nice lens - sharp, but good OOF areas. Different from lenses like my 28 1.4 and CV 40 1.2. Photos didn't sell me on why 24-200 over my 24-70 2.8 for most things.

Of course the 24-70 is the better lens (also the 24-70 F4).
It's just about the additional reach. You have to carry a 70-200 lens too with your 24-70.
And for a "super zoom" the 24-200 is excellent or even the best ever made (when you are fine with the darker apperture)

I love the rendering of Nikkor Z 35mm F1.8 S. They are so pleasant! The in-focus to out-of-focus transition is just perfect for my taste! Thanks for sharing these new sample photos! I was on the fence about this lens for a long time, but these samples really made my mind!

Nikon Z f1.8 lenses punch above their weight...but unfortunately, many reviewers just dismissed them for being f1.8 rather than taking the time to fully evaluate.

Not just reviewers. The majority of photographers consider f/1.8 lenses to be cheaper versions of f/1.4 glass.

They're usually cheaper because they're smaller and there is less glass due to slower aperture, not necessarily because the IQ is worse.

With the Z 1.8 lenses being so good, faster glass makes only sense if you regurarly need to shoot at wider aperture. Quite of not, especially in studio.

IMO, like my non-ii Z6, out-of-camera jpegs are so good (when the shot is properly set up) that messing about with RAW is usually unnecessary. In fact, unless you're pretty good at it, the jpegs will often be better. Just don't blow the highlights!

They are great but for me the RAWs are even better! With just a few small tweaks you can make the photos "perfect".
In my opinion Fuji JPEGs are a tiny bit better than the Nikon because you can very easy adjust shadows and highlights in Q menu.

I just prefer using the RAWs, and sometimes might use the JPEG as a guide if I like a particular shot, but i shoot both formats and might use the JPEGs 10% of the time, if it's a personal thing (ie. family or friends, and the perfect exposure or shot is not entirely critical). With most memory cards being relatively cheap these days, there's not much of a reason to not shoot both formats at least to have in case you want the RAW image later.

But the key is that your exposure (and to an extent, WB) have to be very close if you're going to rely on JPEG, otherwise if you have to start messing with stuff in post too much, the image can start to fall apart quickly.

I never shoot jpegs, not only because you leave a lot on the table, but also because I enjoy post processing. And actually getting better pictures from RAW is very easy every single time.

If it's like the z6 mark 1, the AWB is often off so some post work necessary.

I had the same problem with the old d600.

This actually wasn't an issue that I saw with AWB so much, but rather Adobe's WB presets in LR. AWB was actaully better than using the presets in LRClassic IMO. However I have found it to be worse in some situations than others (and primarily with the Daylight/Sunny preset in LR).

And even comparing to CaptureONe, C1's presets are much more accurate and somewhat close to what the camera has (either auto WB or using a preset setting in the camera). Adobe's math or processing for WB is just wrong sometimes.

I got slammed for saying this but I will archive my Raw and just use free Lightroom mobile and slap them on Google photos and go shoot more instead of hunch over a computer like I have done since lockdown. It’s a hobby for me not a profession.

The 24-200 (for what it is) is an excellent lens and highly recommend it. Definitely better than the 28-300 it sort of "replaces" IMO.

Heck, I still own the Nikon D3s and will keep it till the shutter explodes. Eventhough it's a 12MP camera, images can look magical and creamy when paired with wide aperture lenses.

DJI updates DJI Fly app to support new Mini 3 Pro drone, unlocking full feature set
