Updated: Canon EF-M 32mm F1.4 STM sample gallery

I am using the Canon M100 and M6 Mk2. I bought this lens soon after it came out and was very satisfied with its optical quality. How many lenses does one need for photography ? Its more important to improve one's skill in the craft than to be complaining about the lack of more lenses.

By the way, I have just bought two Leica M mount lenses to be used on my M100 and M6 Mk2. They are the Voightlander APO 35mm f/2.0 and the 28mm f/2.0 Ultron. Both works exceptionally well with an LM - EOS-M adaptor. The good thing about Leica M mount lenses is that it can be used on any mirrorless camera. Should one decide to change brand or go full frame the lenses are still relevant. One can use them for life.

Beside these two Leica M mount lenses I have also bought four TTArtisan lenses with the Canon M mount. They are the 17mm, 23mm, 35mm and 50mm. They work wonderfully too. The manual focus and aperture pose no problems in my photography. In fact, it has many advantages.

A few weeks ago I bought the M6II + M32 F1.4 as a one lens carry setup on wrist strap.
Some might buy the $1400 X100V. Some might buy the M6II + M22. But as a one lens setup on M6II with the great software for Noise Reduction in DXO PhotoLab 4 Elite with Deep Prime Noise Reduction and Clear View Plus for atmospheric Haze removal, this combo of tools is my all time favorite combo in 20 years of digital photography. Carey Rose -- and Matt G -- great job on the gallery! I just wish Canon would develop M5II with IBIS and continue to develop great technology in small packages like this combo.

Nice to see it still being evaluated. I have had the lens since it was released in the USA. My only complaint is the filter thread on mine isn't quite right.

Hopefully Canon will continue with EF-M. Just recently bought a used M6ii and I'm liking it enough I'm considering a second one, though something with IBIS would be nice. I'd actually like Canon to shift EF-M more toward video use which is what I mostly do with it. Thanks to Sigma and Viltrox the only major area on the native lens side I have is telephoto. Well that and an ultra wide with stabilization and larger aperture than the 11-22mm.

Amazed by the balance between bokeh and sharpness. I’m a Nikon and Fuji guy, but the latest Fuji offering left me wanting. That 33mm f1.4 is certainly sharp but I absolutely hate its character, the bokeh has been sacrificed for the sake of sharpness. 😓 Enjoy Canon people.

I'm on my second M62 which i will start testing this week. First one had busted AF.

This lens is too expensive and feels too cheap for my tastes. After handling the sigma EF lenses, this thing feels like a toy in comparison. Not terrible, but just VERY light, which is not good for a body with no IBIS.

If you take into consideration IQ, sharpness, color rendering, OOF areas, size, weight and handling, to my mind, this lens isn't too expensive. And in more than two years of use, I never had a problem with the lack of IBIS.
If you choose the M-system, you have to accept that parts of it are "light", that's one of its great advantages.
For me, it is a convincing lens, which offers very good results.

At the moment I'm more worried about the M body than the lens. I have 3 M bodies, and make direct comparisons from images between them, and also my workhorse 5d3. As long as the lens is good (i adapt quite a few as well), you're gonna get nice, high quality shots.

As far as IBIS, I usually have some form of metal cage/grip. I feel its absolutely critical for the m62. Many, many image samples ive reviewed online and on here on dp are soft/oof at 100%. That's no good for me as i use many images in design layouts & media assets.

Lastly, a few years back i was able to test the EF-M16mm, 30mm, and 24mm sigmas. BONE sharp, it was great. Minor purple fringing. And solid/heavy to combat the lack of ibis.

I have the M6 and several EF-M lenses for about four years now. It is not perfect, but it is a great system, and I would not exchange my 32mm for any other lens.

This is the one lens I miss from EF-M. Tiny, unassuming, terrific sharpness in plane of focus and gentle bokeh outside, great for intimate portraiture. This lens alone is not a good reason to switch into EF-M since other mounts also have excellent 50mm equivalent fast primes, but it is a good reason to take the EF-M mount seriously.

Yes! As an example: Image 15 (the gate with flowers) looks awful on my monitor. Maybe it should be cleaned up in PP, but my JPEGs look much better than straight from the camera.

@Just Another Tog Now I am being nice and NOT trolling and this is my LAST response. The OOF regions look awful on my calibrated 32 inch 4K at 100%. I think 32mp is too much for the Canon APS-C 1.6x crop. I won't be buying an 84mp FF based on these images. The in-focus regions also have problems. What are you viewing the gallery images on ... a smartphone?

3840x2160 = 8,294,000 pixels.
On a 33mp image, I am looking at 2x magnification. That is hardly pixel peeping! The Canon M system is popular because it is cheap. There are better alternatives: Fuji X series et al.
I really liked but never bought the Canon EF lens range. When I do move to MILC I will be buying the better EF lenses and using them with an Adapter.

EF-M is "dead" but also still the best value in APSC. Canon is still the only company with a 32MP body, and their lenses are cheap and cheerful. Sony likes to reuse important parts from years ago, Fuji sets their prices like they're selling full frame, and Nikon is rudderless and spinning in circles as they pursue a fashion camera with two whole Z-DX lenses released.

(Note that I shot Sony APSC, but appreciated how Canon approached APSC.)

Sadly, the powers that be Canon decided that APS-C users only need a specific tiny subset of what would be a complete lens system. The wait for an M5 successor is also dragging on. Not a priority for the manufacturer, so not an attractive system to get into unless you find exactly what you will ever need in the few products that are already in the market.

EF-M is fine if you're ok shooting primes and not going past 56mm. Once you get past that focal length, you are mounting comparatively larger and more expensive EF-L lenses or non-L lenses that are inferior to what Fuji, Sony, Panasonic or Olympus will sell you.

UHM: Many people don't need a massive collection of lenses. EF-M gives you UWA zoom, primes in the wide to normal range, a superzoom, a macro, and a super-duper-zoom. Are there enough buyers to make some sort of 350mm or 400mm zoom? Maybe, maybe not. Sony APSC didn't get a native 300mm+ zoom until 2020, and Canon users can adapt EF glass without a performance hit.

All APSC setups have blind spots. Sony still ships a terrible standard zoom, Nikon barely offers anything beyond the standard zoom, and Fuji rapidly breaks the bank. Ideally Canon would refine their kit lens, but that's unlikely at this point.

I would never touch an APSC normal zoom and use either a superzoom or primes to cover that range.

In my opinion, the biggest problem with EF-M right now is the lack of IBIS. There are so many native non-stabilized lens and third-party lens that would benefit from IBIS that it isn't even funny.

I'm talking about the benefits for stills and especially for video.

That's an odd position to take. Why would you not touch an APS-C normal zoom? There are many that are every bit as good as full frame standard zooms.

As for your point above about adapting at the long end, yes you can do that, but then you take a size and cost penalty relative to systems with dedicated lenses (well, except for Fuji). One of the M6 II's selling points is that absurdly pixel dense sensor.

I just don't like normal zooms. I traded in a 24-70mm RX100 for a 24-200mm one, and on my FF I gravitate towards either my 28-200mm or primes. I just really like picking out details from environments.

@ BrentSchumer, haha no sir, quite the opposite. Most people are leaving FF for Fuji. Join some of the biggest Fuji groups outside of DPReview, we welcome dozens of Sony and Nikon folks daily. These are wedding, landscape, portraits pro photogs etc. Some folks do in fact leave Fuji crop, but when they do they usually head towards Fuji GFX medium format.

Totally agree, Brent. The EF-M system is definitely fit-for-purpose (small, light and affordable). Look at what the 11-22 gives you for the money. Sony, for example, launched a nice 16-55 F2.8 lens but spending $1,300 in a lens of that size and weigh to hang in a A6000 series camera does not make sense to me. At that point the user should have gone to an A7 something camera.

Lensrentals has found decentered Canon lenses. No company is immune to the issue, and it's silly to pretend that your favorite brand is magic based on a cherry-picked DPR sample lens.

All lenses have a manufacturing tolerance. Decentering can be detected on optical benches that Roger has. It may not be bad enough to be an issue in real world use. I just found Canon's lenses to have the least problems from the lenses I've used. I often see lenses with bad enough alignment that I'm surprised that they are released for sale.

Also, like I said, I don't shoot Canon. I use micro 4/3rds and they do have an issue with decentered lenses in my experience and Roger of Lensrentals mentioned that. So why don't I switch to Canon? I'm not interested in spending $$ and I'm quite happy with what I have now. I weeded out the bad lenses and have a good set now.

I still have my original M. Produces great images and I would use it much more if was just a bit faster. Kept it for the Great little 22 pancake. I have the M6 and the M6mkII and the 32 is one of my go to lenses. Maybe there is some life in the system. It makes for a fantastic travel kit.

Canon has had eight years to show the system love. At this point, you are better off hoping for Tamron and Samyang to fill the gaps. I am not sure how likely that is to happen though. Tamron has opted to release a Fuji lens before producing another lens for EF-M. They probably saw the takerate on the EF-M 18-200 and said “Thanks, but no thanks” to releasing other lenses.

If nothing else, possibly rehousing the RF 50/1.8 would be a nice addition. RF has a longer flange distance, so maybe it's possible, but only Canon engineers would know for certain.

Anyhow, while it hasn't been super impressive on the R line, with the small range of EF-M lenses a portrait telephoto would be a nice fit. According to reviews, the 50 does a pretty solid job in the portion of the sensor that would correspond to APS-C.

If it was possible, it'd probably be (relatively) cheap to develop for Canon, and an affordable portrait lens would be a big gain to the EF-M line.

That's one place EF-M really does seem like it's at a disadvantage (however good in itself). It can't exactly share development with the RF series. There isn't quite an RF version of the ubiquitous T7 entry level APS-C. You can't get started with an M200 or M50 and upgrade to an R or R6 and keep your lenses. Being able to bridge that gap would probably help both EF-M and RF.

The Sigma 56 1.4 is a good EF-M portrait lens (still <$500, less affordable than most EF-M), though I've had enough luck with the wide end of the 55-200 Canon, even if it is only 4.5, still a stop better than the normal zoom.

When I saw the title I bet myself that more of the comments would be the same old tedious complaints about Canon's lack of commitment to the M line than about the actual subject of the post--the EF-M 32. I won my bet, which isn't much satisfaction, because I can't afford to pay myself. As for the actual subject, the lens itself is superb. I've had it since it came out, used it extensively on the M6 and M6II, and love it. Along with the 22 F2 and the Sigma 56 F1.4, it makes a great 3 lens kit for the M6II.

All it would take for Canon to quiet the nay sayers would be to actually invest in the mount.

But they are stuck in a terrible situation where they need the market share afforded by M bodies sold at zero profit, limited resources struggling to generate significant traction with the R mount and millions of M mount customers stranded on a mount with no migration path to the R mount.

I would have placed my bet on the same assumption! I've owned the 32mm for almost two years now. It's the best value for money, and rivals some of my FF lenses in terms of output. The Sigma 56mm keeps coming up, as you mentioned. Maybe I should invest in that glass too.

How can the 3rd best selling camera on Amazon (Canon R6 is first as always) be dead? Its funny because when its mentioned Canon passed Sony in mirrorless sales Q4 2020, we are told all the Canon's were M mount. The rest of the time we are told M mount is dead. Sony hasn't updated their APSC cameras in years (same sensor, CPU, memory stick port, and so on), and I would never call it dead. Like M mount they sell very well too.

The EF-M mount is far from dead. There are just too many negative people out there. There are plenty of people going for the Canon M50 and also the M6 Mk2. Not everybody want to go full frame eventually. The EOS-M is a very convenient size to carry around. The price is very affordable unlike the full frame alternative. I, for one, who use to shoot with a full frame Canon 5D Mk2 prefer to shoot with the M6 Mk2. I also use a Micro4/3 camera for its size advantage. By the way, I am not new to photography. I have been shooting since 1972 from the film days.

In the digital world, there are just too many people expecting new stuff coming out quickly. It need not be so for a lot of other products. Leica does not keep coming out with new lenses but they are defnitely not dead. Same with hardware products, certain tools, cookery items/utencils etc.

I just completed buying my TT Artisan Trio for EOS-M ; my 17mm f/1.4, my 35mm f/1.4 and my 50mm f/1.2 manual prime lenses. They are great. If the system is dead, third party manufacturers won't be making lenses for this mount.

I don't get how not releasing new lenses (or not quickly) means a mount is "dead". It's not "dead" if people are still buying the cameras and using the available lenses. I want affordable (ha. relatively.), small, and light. The lens lineup is pretty complete as far as I'm concerned, with 11-200 zoom coverage and a bevy of primes if you count 3rd parties. The zooms are a bit dark, and no prime other than the 28 macro has IS, but that doesn't exactly make the selection useless. If you _want_ heavier (like f2.8) zooms, then you might as well use the EF adapter since the size compared to then lens is negligible.

This lens on the 32mp sensor of the M6ii is the biggest bang for the buck in the market today. For its size, it's actually quite heavy but it remains the most portable 1.4 lens for the M system. I've used it for corporate portraits, street, travel, landscape, sports. And I own to R bodies.

A very good lens indeed. I bought mine 2.5 years ago. It has very good rendering too. Many say the Canon EF-M system is "dead". I would say its far from it. How many lenses do we need for a camera ? The lenses available are good enough especially when you can use EF lenses with an adaptor. I have the 22mm f2.0 and the 11-22mm f/4.0-5.6 together with the kit lens. Recently, I have also bought the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 and the TTArtisan Trio.; namely the 17mm f/1.4, the 35mm f/1.4 and the 50mm f/1.2. On many occasion, I prefer to use 100% manual lenses. Forget about the auto focus and the high fps burst mode. Photography is not about how fast you can shoot in a burst. Its about composition, correct exposure, the meaning behind your photo, lighting control etc.

The M is with us for a long time BUT canon will stop updating the top models like they have with the M5 to make way for lower end RF body ..that's why there is no M5mkii and why i traded my M5 for an R6 (i am missing the 11-22)..sooner or later the flagship body will be a M50mk3 or4

Whenever I see re-reviews like this from DPR particularly from the M platform, it has preceded an M product launch, true.

However, I think they're just seeing if the new Fuji 33mm f/1.4 unseated the Canon 32mm f/1.4 as "king" of APS-C.

Personal opinion; I don't think the $799 Fuji unseated the $499 Canon. Now part of that may be the 32MP advantage of the M6 II and some bias on my behalf, but I don't think so. They both have good bokeh rendering, but, the Canon exhibits less "cats-eye" in my viewing and is sharper, but, that's a hard one to say considering the Canon is bolted to a 32MP sensor vs the Fuji is bolted to a 26MP sensor. However, in viewing things in context, a lens is only as good as a body and vice-versa.

I'd say Canon wins this round in terms of lens. But, it sure would be nice if Canon did an IBIS-equipped M body to go with it. Fuji wins that round, however, IBIS + the 32mm isn't as needed as you'd think. The 22 pancake and video work is where IBIS on the M is lacking.

Should Canon actually release a M5 Mark II with IBIS, and, a 15-45 f/1.8-3.5 lens? I'd think about it. I REALLY doubt that's going to happen. And, it'd need to be now as anything launched now, ships before Christmas. Anything launched after now? Nope. Any hope for new M's rides on this announcement, but, less than 7 days till announcement and news about new EF-M gear hasn't broke? Highly unlikely. Pricing is starting to leak on the new gear so clearly retailers have already loaded up their SKUs. The fact nobody with access to those has confirmed a M release? That stinks is all I'm going to say.

Chasing the greatest IQ is extremely expensive and gets unbelievably heavy and has diminishing returns even negative returns in some cases. The sooner Canon realizes the future is in light weight design, the better off they will be in the long run.

I gather Canon does understand target audiences other than the rich, however, I also gather they plan to accomplish this through the RF mount, which won’t quite be as cheap, or light as the M. That’s a shame. I do think the fan boy disruption on January, is an APS-C RF body. Makes sense with that cheap glass coming out next week. Add a 16-45 “slow” RF lens to said body in January? Makes perfect sense.

The 32mm is a feat of engineering, but it may be the last of the M lenses…

Wait - STOP! M being dead is just a rumor. Canon hasn't killed off any M lenses or bodies unless a newer replacement model came out. Canon hasn't announced killing any M lenses. But they have within the year already announced stopping reproduction on some EF lenses.

They've been kinda busy with RF stuff...
I still think there might not be an APS RF and M will be for people want teeny/stylish and RF only FF and for prosumers...

It would be one thing if the EF-M line-up was as robust as m4/3, but it's a wasteland over 56mm. Sure, you can adapt EF lenses, but then you're left with a system that is larger and heavier than all the other crop systems. Will Canon discontinue the system? Probably not for at least another 5 years. Does that mean the system will get the lenses it needs to compete with Fuji, Sony or m4/3? Nope!

The M6 mk II has the pixel density of an 84.5MP FF sensor, so adapting, say, a 100-400 would be impressive vs a R5's reach, let alone a 20MP/24MP 1/3 series camera...
(11236 pixels across a FF sensor vs 8192...)

rumours on other canon bodies and lenses have sometimes have hit the mark but never with the M for some strange reason like the M50 mkii was definitely 32MP with IBIS 4k with no crop etc but yes i count them as entertainment

I’ve shot with this lens for a while now and it’s still my favorite 50mm equivalent optic I’ve used. This includes my preference over the Fujifilm XF35mmF1.4, Sigma 50mm Art, and Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L. This isn’t the optical masterpiece that people always want to find, but it brings to the table great character and beautiful images - much like the Fujifilm XF lens. What makes this lens so special for me is it’s size and weight combined with the absolutely incredible minimum focus distance - where it remains incredibly sharp. I started bringing this lens to events as well as weddings, and I would pull it out as a special utility lens. It’s a shame Canon won’t develop more lenses for the EF-M mount. The 22mm pancake, 32mm fast prime, and 11-22 or extraordinary lenses. Sadly, everything else is pretty poor and pedestrian. Oh well, Canon, this is why I moved on to Fuji for my APS-C kit.

Sadly, Fuji doesn't have anything what one could call original and practical at the same time. I owned 35 f 1.4 and 14 f 2.8, but most systems have great primes. On the other hand, Panasonic has made leica 10-25 f 1.7 for micro 43 and 20-60 for L-mount. Olympus has created that gorgeous 8-25 f 4. What about Fuji? More big, traditional prime lenses and more zooms from 18 to something? No, thanks. Something like 14-30 f 4 would be much more welcome for any aps-c system.

MoonMadness, I once had hope that Canon would develop the system more. But I've been shooting EF-M since 2017 and still love what's available. However, I don't think there will be anything added from this point forward. If the M50 Mark II is an indication of how much R&D money is available to the M department...it's not much. Aditionally, there haven't been any patents files aside from a higher end and improved aperture kit lens. This was rumored for an M5 Mark II kit, but neither ever saw the light of day.

@Edward 74 I really have no idea what you're trying to declare here, but Fuji offers a thoroughly comprehensive lineup of lenses that aren't available on any other crop sensor system - many of which are very fast apertured and weather-sealed. You say they need to make a 14-30mm f/4? That's the focal range equivalent of 21-45mm. I do think 21mm sounds nice but I know a 45mm maximum would become very frustrating. It just seems live a very limited appeal lens, versus something more useful like their XF 16-80 (24-120) or XF 10-24 (15-36). To name a few original and practical zoom lenses beyond the 16-80, we have the 8-16mm f/2.8, super compact XF 18-55 f/2.8-4, and the really small XF 70-300. Yes, many other camera systems offer SOME good primes, but not all of the focal lengths you could want. With Fuji primes, take you pick, because you're not going to find most of these on any other camera system. A 28mm equivalent f/1.4 lens or an f/2 pancake if the 1.4 is too large?! Sign me up.

@ Kevin DiOssi I have been shooting with the EOS-M system since I bought the M100 three years ago and the M6 Mk2 two and a half years ago. I have never felt that the system is inadequate. So far the lenses available are good enough. I have also bought the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 and the TTArtisan Trio ; the 17mm f/1.4, the 35mm f/1.4 and the 50mm f/1.2. As for telephoto, I just use the adaptor to use my other L Lenses from my DSLR days. How many lenses do we really need ?

You really have no idea...but you didn't even try to get it. Just read more careful and don't hurry to answer.
I said that "most systems have great primes"; you yourself had written that "22mm pancake, 32mm fast prime...are extraordinary lenses", didn't you? Well, add sigma's primes and here we are - Canon M has great primes!
The 14-30 (21-45) can be quite popular lens with people who like traveling light (and I'm sure that manufacturers can make it even a little bit longer to make you less frustrated). I personally don't want to carry around "more useful" XF 10-24 (15-36) plus one more "more useful" XF 16-80 (24-120), and I'm not alone for sure. Maybe that is one of the reasons Panasonic has made the 10-25, maybe there're other reasons out there, but that's definitely why I have sold out all my Fuji stuff and ventured to Olympus system for the 8-25 f4 sake. But If one day Canon or Fuji create something like 14-30 or 12-35 for their aps-c systems I would be happy to come back.

@Edward 74 you leaving APS-C for M43 for the oddball lenses and the size and weight tells me everything I need to know, and that’s great. You’ve found a camera system that provides the lenses you want, much as I moved away from EF-M for Fuji because they provide what I want, not what you want. That is better variety and more capable camera bodies along with a larger assortment of lenses. Canon themselves only offer 2 primes worth owning and not a single lens or camera from Canon’s M line is weather sealed. Along with the Sigma offerings, yes, they now have a total of 4 primes lenses worth owning. That doesn’t make up for the lack of options for quality zooms - there are none I consider quality beyond the 11-22. To each their own.

System? It has three lenses from Canon that are worth mounting: 11-22, 22 f/2 and 32 f/1.4. Then there's the two Sigma primes (16 f/1.4 and 56 f/1.4, the 30 f/1.4 is redundant) and that's it. Everything over 56mm has to come from the EF lens catalogue, which means you're going to be using FF glass and end up with a heavier system than Fuji, Sony or m4/3.

unhappymeal: What's the definition of a system? What's the minimum number of lenses it needs? Some people are happy with one lens and the majority don't need anything else than what's available in the M.
I'm not defending Canon but still no other system offers a wide angle like the 11-22 or this 32mm 1.4 at this price and quality.

1. A boat load of those are manual focus, which most people will not buy.

2. No, no they will not be the same size. Compare the size of the Canon EF 70-300 IS L to the Fuji XF 70-300 or Sony 70-350. The Canon lens is over twice the mass, the same aperture and while it's sharper, it's not so drastic that they're in different classes.

You'd probably want to buy the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II, which is one of the bargains of the Canon range, and a big cost saving over the L.

The EOS-M system is very much alive. I doubt they would even consider killing it. Not everybody would want to go fullframe eventhough it is mirrorless. How many lenses do you really need ? I was using a 5D Mk2 yet I am using a M6 Mk2 now. I also just bought the TTArtisan Trio; namely their 17mm, 35mm and 50mm and the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 much earlier.

The EOS-M is just the right size for many types of photography.

I don't need a tonne of lenses, but a lot of people would consider a good, reasonably fast standard zoom a bare minimum. A decent macro lens with more working distance than the 28mm is also a pretty bog standard offering on every system. Lastly, I'm pretty sure every system has a native telephoto lens that gets you out to over 400mm.

Heck, even Sony saw fit to give their red-headed stepchild, the APS-C E-mount a few nice standard zooms and a 70-350.

I don't see it, centre sharpness is excellent for the cheaper lens and the edges are only lagging at the wide end. It's a bargain and an excellent match (the 100-400 II is the best option, but the size looks silly and handling wouldn't be great, unless on a tripod).
