That looks like a mistake in the labeling, it's a manual process. I shot most of the images in my contributions to this gallery using the 45-100, but a handful were shot on the 250mm.

Looks like the ultimate camera. Awesome IQ in a reasonable-sized package and ability to take photos without a tripod (it's medium format)

While i can commend Fuji for reducing the camera body prices, those lenses would break me financially.

I was just kidding around, as sadly I haven't yet had the chance to learn to surf. But when I lived in SoCal and visited Hawaii, the Pacific ocean surfing was said to be superior to the east coast. A friend who lives in Panama (literally, access to both oceans for comparison) says the same.

I don't understand the comment about the races on our Pacific beach? As opposed to there being none in NH? Pardon my ignorance, but to what kind of races are you referring?

Ahh. Our pacific beach taxes literally support the less taxed, Conservative segment of our state that is east of the Cascade mountain range.

Heaven knows that our most wealthy citizens here-collectively, half a trillion dollars in personal wealth-don't pay any taxes. Any. At all. There's no income tax in Washington.

Those pics are really good as a reference to see Fuji's big push on portable medium format camera!

I brought a X1d II last year before July. Everything looks fine after this came out, and gfx100s seems have everything I want to improve on Hasselblad. But this camera still very "bulky" compare to x1d. Probably there will be some big improvements on new X1d later. I hope DP review could have some professional comparisons between those two including lens too:)

I think there must be an X1D-3 with the way Fuji is pushing the MF space. Just a matter of when Hassy releases it, but perhaps the video series they just started is a way of getting everyone thinking about the cameras before they release the 3.

Nice job on the photography, interesting scenes and useful range of subjects. The camera captures great detail and nice color, however in sunlit scenes the deep shadow tones are artificially compressed and "inky," even when processed with Nostalgic Negative film profile. IOW I see inadequate tonal separation in the deep shadows which is certainly no comparison to color neg. film (which I used for decades in my work).

Those are OOC presets and jpegs were designed to remove subtleties that most people don't find critical. Sure, film might do better off the bat, but you can always shoot raw.

Agreed, this gallery was fun to browse through! The flip side is that photographically almost any modern camera would have done the job. There was very little Fuji "larger than full frame" magic in these pictures, just good photography.

Yes, it’s the first time in a while I stop by, and love the camera, and get samples with wide variety of subjects to assess if I would like it. Really, many shots have comparable shots I have made at one time another, so it was not just pretty and illustrative, but also has the kind of details of things I am familiar with.

Hats off to the gallery shooter. I though it was just me being picky, but I knew it wasn’t me.

Good possibility... that would fit the front fender cutouts for the bumper uprights. What really throws me is that incredibly long rear end aft of the greenhouse. Looks more like a tarped-over Camino ot Ranchero bed than a standard sedan's rear deck.

Yes the long sweeping rear is what made me think Meteor. Buddy had a '69 Meteor.

Looked more sleek driving in reverse haha.

A '69 restored Meteor would be worth holding onto that beater, but not a half assed rebuild. Ranchero of course worth a tonne in beater condition still.

Nothing will ever be more comfortable for straight-line highway cruising but, God, the weight transfer on those soft springs when doing anything else!

Up until 6yrs ago, the newest car I ever owned was a 1970 Cutless Supreme.

Yeah, nothing like that floating feeling down the highway. Felt like the tires were going to fold underneath the car when you turn though.

I have a 2001 M5 now, but even this 130k$(when new) car feels and looks crappy plastic compared to my '60s cars. Especially my '66 Lincoln Continental. 462 4 barrel, suicide doors, 500pounds of chrome and velour. I should never have let that go. I just got happy to remember it and now upset again dang it.

Yes, its just strange how the tarp lays over the "bed" of the Ranchero.

And the rear bumper shape doesnt match a '60s or '70s Ranchero.

Its a car that was missed in the early 2000s craze to be restored. So, I think its not a high demand model of something. Or, their price was too high and missed out on the bubble.

Sorry to say, but none of these pictures show what this camera is capable of. All of them could as well been taken with an MFT and if it were a blind test many here would fail to pass the test to figure out it would came from a GFX100S.

Some of the images even show blown out highlights. That's not an advert for a camera that supposed to be 16-bit depth and which claims to offer 15 to 16 stops of DR.

No not wrong - You didn't read what I said.
You just disagree. Again THESE pictures don't show what this camera is capable of. And if you think these are outstanding images that show the GFX full potential then it would imho be a waste of money. Because all of these images as shown here could in fact be taken with an MFT system. None of these images excite or differentiate them from cheaper systems with smaller sensors.

There is imho nothing that shows that this camera stands out above the rest. Just having more megapixels could excite you, but doesn't excite me at all. A camera is a tool to create not a jewelry to show off with.

In a blind test of images taken by any camera (including latest generation phones), people would be unable to tell which is which. However, if you would compare the images takes at the same moment / spot using different camera's, the story would be quite different.

It is natural to have the lighting conditions you live in as a benchmark. But given the amount of haze in the image, the amount of detail in the sky and the subtle gradations with that kind of light is really amazing. If you know how hard those circumstances are for any camera, even if it looks a bit compressed in DR, you'd be jumping for joy with this camera in your hands. I live at the coast, same kind of light here.

The first image was clearly not taken with an MFT camera. If it had been, the name on the side of the truck would have been illegible.

I generally don't care whether my photographs have that level of detail, so I have no plans to buy a GFX 100S. The sample gallery shows what the camera can do; whether you need it is up to you.

Awy - Simple:
1. The overall impression that one is truly looking into a scene, or at the subject, rather than at a photograph. A photo in which the level of clarity is one that you might not otherwise see. We photographers that have used true Medium Format used to call that quality as transparency, or immersiveness.

2. Acuity or also referred to as perceived edge definition and ‘sharpness’.

These GFX images look no better than any other camera with a smaller sensor and miss that perceived edge definition and sharpness one had with true Medium Format.

3. Color accuracy - More bits (bit depth) should resolve in better tonal values for each channel. None of these images in the examples do show this.

3. Tonal transitions and dynamic range - The camera’s ability to simultaneously capture luminance variation across a large spread of brightness.

As some of these images have blown out highlights it does not show that it is capable of giving such wide DR as is claimed.

4. Angle of view, depth of field and depth of field transition - The distinctive signature of larger format sensor is the way different angles of view render. A different focal length on a given format changes magnification. What changes between formats is the fact that a larger format requires a longer focal length to maintain the same angle of view compared to a smaller one.

The abruptness of the out of focus transition is very different for all of these focal lengths, partially because of the focal length, This should give a less shapr transition.

None of the examples show this!

But maybe the GFX is just not the camera that offers any of these features and is just incapable of giving this Medium Format look. Partly because it uses a sensor that is hardly larger than FF and offers a much incomplete lens line-up...

Also, yes the lenses are expensive-but compared to Sony G Master, Canon L, and Nikon's top-flight Z glass-the difference is pretty minimal, really. I mean really, you aren't gonna spend good used car money for an A1 or R5 or the impending Z9, then slap a $200 Samyang on the front of it.

Medium format have strengths like better quality wide apertures (larger projection area), high ISO performance, dynamic range and resolution. Although I don't know about GFX 100 lenses, if they have any really wide aperture options and what is their quality.

So GFX100 galleries should have mostly widest apertures, low light high ISO, extreme contrast, fine detailed subjects. Also there should be action in most shots so that tripod long exposures are not possible. Quite pointless to shoot near static subjects with IBIS when tripod can do a better job and also makes pixel shift possible.

The GFX line was designed for high resolution, not low light. The recently released 80mm f/1.7 lens means that there are now two fast lenses: the 80mm f/1.7, equivalent to a full frame 62mm f/1.3 and the 110mm f/2, equivalent to a full frame 85mm f/1.55, but it appears that DPreview doesn't have any lenses that are faster than f/4. In low light scenarios you can full frame lenses that are as fast or faster than the equivalent GFX lenses, and noise will mean you don't get enough fine detail to benefit from 101 megapixels. So for low light shooting, full frame should work as well or better, while costing less.

Funny how the bigger sensor size of FF compared to crop makes such a huge difference, but the 70 percent larger surface area of GFX doesn't mean anything in low light..

62mm f1.3 equivalent is pretty damn fast.

I don't know if you meant these samples should have been done in a different way or that there's no point going MF?

Based on the comment I don't know what you expect from this gallery? Most testsamples on this website are shot in the same way so they all look similar. APS-C, FF or MF. Doesn't really matter in this case. That said, I hope everyone downloads the RAW files and play with them. That will give more feedback.

Yes, but only for the masses. I grant mobile cameras are extremely practical, and good enough+. But when extraordinary calls, you need a better camera. Note not many people will reckon that, and in many cases, too many, the FF or longer cameras are completely wasted!

I do have to say that I'm pleased at what Fuji is doing with the GF system... they're bringing an otherwise expensive platform (medium format) and making it affordable to the masses and the "average" photographer. Obviously it's geared towards pros/serious enthusiasts, but still, MF bodies with 50 MP for about $5,000 compared to whatever PhaseOne and Hasselblad offer, gives people a great option. Regardless, I think that MF may build more steam as time moves on and we reach the limits of FF (may still be another 5-10 years off) but if the market does move to MF being the next FF, Fuji will already be there.

In fact, if the lenses weren't so darned expensive, I'd consider a used GF50 body, which would be a nice balance between resolution and high ISO noise performance.

Well, in the recent GM lens review it sounded like Chris and Jordan think FF is good for more than 60MP so I don't think they're out of steam yet. And Blackmagic made a 12K = 80MP S35 video camera, though I'm not quite sure what to think about that.

What would drive such a movement? These MF systems seem pretty niche and don't they need faster lenses if they are going to compete against FF outside of base ISO? I don't get it.

Seems more like the march of gadgetry and there isn't really a "killer app" for MF.

Personally, I think things will move the other way for enthusiasts. No one really wants to carry around huge cameras. And with faster readout sensors, the software aspect becomes stronger and stronger. You have AutoHDR-type photos or HHHR on a FF sensor, etc when would you even need a larger sensor?
