JPEG Image Size & Quality

The DSC-P9 provides four different image size options (2272 x 1704, 1600 x 1200, 1280 x 960 and 640 x 480) in combination with two JPEG compression levels (Fine and Standard). Note that the P9 doesn't have an uncompressed TIFF or RAW shooting option (nor are this camera's users likely to need it).

To give an impression of what some of the combinations of image size and quality produce the table below is a cross reference of some of them:

  • 2272 x 1704 Fine
  • 2272 x 1704 Standard
  • 1600 x 1200 Fine
  • 1280 x 960 Fine
  • 640 x 480 Fine

Images below are cropped 240 x 100 area of the image magnified 200% (nearest neighbour).

It's fairly refreshing to see that standard quality JPEG doesn't have too much of a detrimental effect on image quality, there are very few visible JPEG artifacts at 2272 x 1704 Standard JPEG which would make it (in my opinion) the image quality of choice for every day shooting with Fine JPEG reserved for those special occasions / shots.

The DSC-P9 provides five levels of in-camera sharpening, these range from -2 (virtually no sharpening) to +2 (very strong sharpening). Having control over sharpening levels is becoming the norm these days on most digital cameras, it would be nice to see Sony also providing control over tone and colour saturation in the same way (many people don't like Sony images because they can look over-saturated).
