Forget the compactness, can Nexuser still point to a camera that has the same industry leading sensor performance (A7c has better sensor than much more expensive R6) or great AF (A7c has better AF than A7iii) at a cheaper price?

How about A7III? In some markets it is cheaper than A7C or very close.
Image quality-wise, all rivals have similar image quality. %3-5 difference doesn't matter at all. Z6 also has great image quality. I wouldn't choose my camera based on less than 1 stop DR advantage.
7C has many drawbacks like really old LCD, smallest EVF, 1/4000 shutter speed, no real mechanical shutter (I think EFCS is locked), less number of buttons, no joystick, smaller grip, only 1 SD card slot and 8bit video (when all rivals give 10bit video). Too many negatives for a camera with a price close to Z6, A7III, S1.

NexUser is exactly correct. When this camera isnt new and the price reflects, it will be a decent camera for the few people who want a tiny, no frills FF.

Or possibly now for FF vloggers its a good choice.

DR never was a good reason to switch or brag(maybe for landscapes), but especially now. No way. They are all too close. Any other feature is more valid to compare.

A deafening roar of disappointment from most. An opportunity missed. There is a great need for an interchangeable lens camera like this but must be at least at half the price! Standard zoom needs a little more length (90mm).

Sony A7C - the the C is for Canon (in the past canon was doing stuff like this - putting old tech in new bodies - game is changing it seems.. I really hope they wont cripple the a7iv like that...). They really need to be more innovative .. I guess they had a bunch of old sensors and processors and displays etc. in their storage room and try to put them into a new body to sell them... Totally overpriced - pricetag should have been around $1000-1200 - with a new menue and a fully useable touchscreen ..

I also really don't like this downsizing-trend .. mirrorless has a lot of advantages which I really love. Sony really should start thinking abpout a professional camera-body which is not too tiny - with bigger lenses the a7 and a9 cameras are way too small ..

What does concern me however is the volume of marketing and coverage Sony cameras receive compared to other brands, makes you wonder just how impartial the reviewing is going to be.

I think one of the more impressive things about this camera (assuming CIPA is even close) is the battery life compared to the other ML in it's class. But seeing that it looks like Sony has recycled parts from other models and put it into this camera (the 24MP sensor, processor, etc) makes me wonder how well it will sell. I mean it will sell, but how well? I mean, even the entry-level Nikon Z5 has a focusing stick yet this one lacks one. Granted it's not a huge deal for some, but for others it seems that it may be....

I guess in a way, not too much to write home about here... More like they managed to fit a FF 24MP sensor into a body that's the size of an a6000.

The price (for the body) though is a bit steep considering I think Nikon has set the lowest price-point for a modern entry level FF camera at just $1400 (tied with the RP which was $1399 at launch but is now $1000-$1100 discounted so that sort of doesn't count)

I think if they really wanted to compete with Nikon they should have priced this maybe in the vicinity of $1599 without a lens and that would have been close enough to give Nikon a run for its money.

I mean being that it seems to use some/mostly recycled components from other cameras in its line, they were probably able to save some money, so this camera might be more about profit than pushing the boundaries of ML cameras forward which is fine, but again, I feel that if this is the case (Where, say they could cut R&D in half) that $1800 is still steep and they very well could have gone with a much lower price point like I mentioned to attract more buyers. Only time will tell I guess, as to how well this will sell.

One of the preview videos I watched (I forget which sorry) stated there's no option to disable EFC, it's always on. Is that a pre production bug or somehow a consequence of the new shutter? That could negative repercussions for anyone wanting to use fast primes at high SS, unless they've finally wised up and auto disabled EFC at some point between 1/500 and 1/1000?

Depend if you like what they have been producing. For me I was hoping that Sony would produce the full frame camera with the same form factor as the DX bodies. Nice small bodies with nice small f2 lenses. Instead the bodies grew in size and large F1.4 primes and 2.8 zooms seemed to be the priority.
Sure its great for Sony and I know many like the Sony A7 series.

I've got an A7 myself had it for years and a Nex C3 before that.
I can live with the size of the A7 its OK, I put some small manual focus lenses on it to keep it compact.
This new A7C could be the of real interest for me if it is any good.

Not sure what DX bodies you are talking about. But yeah, Sony started small and then made the A7 series larger first to add IBIS and then to make room for a bigger battery. This A7C is not that much smaller than the A7III to make a difference, in my opinion. If they really wanted to go small, they should have gone smaller. There may be physical reasons that this is the limit. Don't know.

VERY VERY VERY much troubling so. A backwards step from a backwards step from good ergonomics still smells funny no matter how golden you paint it. It is a beginner level user interface for 2000 Euro. Only that they still can’t figure out how to do proper touch screen operation for the beginners they seemingly address.

Why not a front dial and replace the top back wheel with a proper joystick? Maybe Sony should invest into genetics research so that we all can grow some additional thumbs to operate 3 back wheels.

Sony for a7C ii, please
- get rid of EVF completely and add Hotshoe EVF, (even offer 2 with different resolution so landscape photographers can get hi-res if they need).
- Ditch the fully articulate screen make it tilt up+down
- that'll make the camera slimmer and 100g lighter
- make a kit of 3 f2.8 (pancake) lenses ranging from 18-35-75
- sell body+ kit it for $/EUR 2000
- everyone will buy it.

Fully articulated screens are the future because YouTube influencers are all vloggers and Insist on it. The days of a tiltable screen Are numbered. I prefer a tilt and not flippy but every single reviewer wants flippy so flippy is what we will get

And for a few bucks I apply a screen protector on an always-exposed tilting LCD and I too could throw the camera in a bag with abandon. On top of that, I'd have an LCD that's not as cumbersome to actually use for stills photography.

As a stills photographer, I never liked the flippy screen in my old Canon A80 camera. It's too cumbersome to tilt it up or down, when it's in normal working position. And also in that manner the camera becomes WAY bigger and more fragile. Although it's a definite plus for video people, of course.

I am curious what competitive advantages a typical Sony camera has over other cameras. Canon matched them in terms of AF and DR (at least, almost matched them to the point of no significant distinction) and exceeded them in IBIS. Ergonomics, "color science", menu, etc. are subjective, though it seems that most people prefer Canon over Sony for these things. Sony has stacked sensor which Canon does not have. Not sure whether Canon has BSI sensor. Sony has a 61MP camera but Canon has the technology to do it (if we look at its APS-C camera). A7SIII is definitely more reliable for video-centric people. But for a stills guy, I think that the reasons to switch to Sony are not very compelling anymore - I am talking in general; there are always exceptions.

Its true some of the competition has caught up with Sony FF mirrorless and even surpassed in some cases (IBIS for example), but the main competitive advantage Sony still has left with e-mount is 3rd party access to affordable lenses such as Tamron's f/2.8 zooms and Samyangs compact primes.

Oh yeah, I forgot to write about the lenses. That's a huge plus - guys like Tamron and Samyang giving the cheaper but good quality alternatives. Sigma producing good lenses too. Also, Sony values compactness more than anybody else.

Not as open a mount as people like to say.

And all those lenses are coming to RF soon enough that it wouldnt be worth changing systems. 3rd party, first party, and EF adapted.

And then you have everything the Canon offers over the Sony's as Kris mentions.

Now that there is the R5/6, it is much more difficult to go Sony. Before the R5, the a7R3 was certainly a big deal almost worth switching for.

Handsome, You know they are. They went to Canon first, they will come to RF sooner than later. And since all existing EF versions still work adapted, its not a reason to switch. Its not the same as when Sony was new and no one wanted to make a lens for them but eventually did.

mxSR, I think people that switched from Canon to Sony many will come back. They are adapting their EF to Sony, and Canon has the camera to switch back for now.
Many will not switch though.

User, You mean the RF lenses i guess? Yes true. Weight and quality go together with todays lens technology. As for what feels good to use, Canon 100%. No person with normal sized hands would choose the Sony body and ergos. Hide the brand sticker and hold/use them. I have many times.

Sony has some great tech, a7(R)3 very good. Canon has finally, finally, matched them now though. No typo, 2 finally's.

edit: Realized its a Sony camera thread. Sorry, I am not meaning to be anti Sony.

- Onto the lenses - this is your guess that the third party manufacturers will start producing lenses for RF mount. We don't officially know about most of them yet. Maybe an educated guess, though.

- Much respect for Canon R5 (little reason for Canon guys to switch to Sony).

- Nothing wrong being anti-Sony on Sony threads. The Sony users haven't bought these threads and everyone is free to express her / his opinions as long as they are within the guidelines of DPR. No need to be like that known Canon-fanatic who starts weeping every time Sony guys comment on Canon threads and then when Sony releases a product, he buys new clothes on the pious occasion, pours some holy water on his head and starts commenting (trolling, as he says) on Sony threads.

Kris, I think that by Sony making each iteration of the a7(r) larger, does prove also that while people say they want a small FF camera that larger and more well placed buttons and grip are functionally better. Sony knows this also.

This a7c is very small, but made for a certain group that may not hold it to their face with large lenses like an a7 or a7R series type demographic.

What people say they want and what is objectionably more functional/ergonomic can be very different.

I think Sony went after that group and to differentiate themselves from Canon/Nikon in the beginning.

The entire mirrorless line was to offer a compact line along with the Sony SLT cameras. A Sony executive said in 2013 that they made 35mm f/2.8 because their focus would be on compact lenses. That strategy evolved over time and A7 / A9 series became the primary series in FF cameras for Sony. Sony has always given priority to compactness - I bought its slow TZ series laptop because it was quite compact. Sony lenses (the newer ones especially) offer high quality but are still relatively compact. So, no wonder Sony released A7C. I can see many people actually want a camera this size (I included). The only questionable thing is price - it is maybe 200-300 bucks costlier than what it should be, assuming that not much R&D has gone into this. So, yes, Sony has differentiated by offering compact bodies / lenses which are high quality. Canon RF offers very high quality but heavy lenses. Nikon Z mostly offers very high quality smaller aperture lenses (that are larger / costlier than the likes).

I agree but you didnt address the few notes i mentioned. No problem with that but Im sort of repeating a bit here.

The larger grips show they see that their ergonomics were not great. Canon has seen they can go smaller and still be excellent ergo wise.

Sony went for a more Fuji type crowd but ended up with sensor and AF tech to match or exceed Canon/Nikon along the way. Only those 2 things though.

Whether smaller is better is subjective but needs a lot of weight on smaller to convince that the ergos are good. A blind test on just ergos I think there are very clear winners in Nikon/Canon.

700g vs 600g when one is far nicer to use is not worth saving that weight saving.
Of course a 35mm 2.8 welded on to a 550g camera is nice around the neck. But not worth it for a FF ILC. +-150g makes no difference with a 1kg lens on it.

a7 was a significantly less sturdy built.
But it was built well enough for 4yrs of useage for me (also the weak mount).
I could probably live without EVF if the display would be smartphonelike bright for outside usage.
Make it a 400g ILC FF so i can have 500g with 2.8/35 like RX1.

Nice enough. Indeed impressive to shoe-horn the (largely) internals of the A7III into this body.
I completely understand the positioning - I bought the A7III not too long after release & if this camera had been available at the same time, it's the format I would have gone for, having been a long-time a6000 user. I'm largely happy with the photos from the A7III but admit that I'd take it more places if it were smaller - I rarely left the a6000 behind - even though today I use a Batis 40mm which isn't too heavy. Size/weight apart, there's no compelling reason for me to buy at this time though - and it's amazing to me how often - eg Twitter/IG - the images on my Pixel 3a are 'good enough!'

I like the X-E design concept from day one, but it has to be properly executed. This new Sony camera has the looks, but has only a beginner user interface and does cost a fortune in comparison. If you want to go small, the X-E3 is a great way to do it. Sure, this Sony has a much better performance but the Fuji is small and affordable and usually capable enough for a walkaround camera.

So it is clear that 8bit and menus are processor dependent limitations. But to be honest, this body looks like a great idea. Light and small, still excellent IQ, used in A mode with small lenses like this kit lens or 35mm f2.8. It could be a favorite camera for my wife.

You still need it if you shoot with Focus set to Spot. Whenever you recompose so that the eyes are no longer within the selected spot, you must hold down the Eye-AF button to perform a frame-wide eye detection.

An alternative would be to move the focus spot every time when recomposing, which is cumbersome.

Sure - camera performs automatic eye detection under selected focus area. I don't use spot focusing except for rare circumstances, as there're better options in the list.

@TORN, people do buy A7iii for video and A7c offers slightly better specs for video than A7iii. If someone is in the market now for A7iii this may be slightly better. Let’s not forget A7c doesn’t overheat at 24C.

This honestly looks like one of the most practical cameras ever made. Mirrorless finally reaching its potential. This is barely over half the size and weight of a 24-megapixel full frame DSLR from 5 years ago, like the D750, *and* it has better autofocus and burst rate, and additional features like IBIS and 4k video that those cameras never had. I'm impressed.

Getting a full frame camera with IBIS into this form factor is no small thing. I don't care about marketing hype--I care about the fact that there's finally, FINALLY a fully-featured FF mirrorless camera that offers huge size and weight benefits over a DSLR with similar IQ. I also hailed the Sigma fp for similar reasons, but that camera, cool as it is, has a far less fleshed-out spec sheet than this one. For those of us who prize compactness in our cameras, this release is a big deal.

Also A7c has real time tracking and has eye-AF for video (both were missing in A7iii)

I agree with you on their marketing hype; they should tone it down and be realistic. But that goes for all companies

@Magnar W I've no idea which camera you mean? The Nikon D750 DSLR has AF which even today is not matched by any mirrorless camera, so I find the statement above that this has "better" AF to be somewhat ludicrous - maybe if it was referring to eye AF (which is just one tiny part for me anyway..)

Have you heard of a 3 yr old camera called the A9 that rivals D6 and 1dxiii?

The few months old R5 probably has probably better performance than your Nikon D750. The days of DSLR having superior AF is long gone (maybe not applicable for D6 and 1Dxiii)

@Handsome90 I don't have a D750 actually, just observing all the BIF photographers saying how useless mirrorless are (evf lag/blackouts, continuous AF etc).

I honestly didn't know about the A9, and (after having had a look) it does indeed seem to fix the issues related to the EVF (and perhaps the tracking) but it's currently 5 times the price of the D750 (not that this matters when discussing capabilities, I know) where I live so I guess it's above my budget..

D500 will be a better bif, fast sports camera than any mirrorless I would bet. a9 should be good, I havnt tested the EVF for comparable tracking smoothness though. As well as ability to drive the lens as quickly.

I know the AF and tracking tech is excellent in the a9. But real life the D500 may still be right there and probably a better experience in the viewfinder. Much better than any other mirrorless than the a9 for sure.

Just saying this so fz750 has another valid view. Not saying you are wrong Handsome.

Wow, that's a small viewfinder. One would think it would be easier to dive into the parts bin of A6k line and use the existing, better stuff.

I guess they had to cut costs somewhere.

R5 has got to be close though eh? Unless you need unlimited 8k.

I havnt tested the R5 yet, but I suspect the auto options are only in full stop increments as usual which is terrible. Nikon has 1/3 stop increments.

Need to see the fluidness of the EVF and tracking capability real world. I doubt the EVF is to my standards yet. OVF still a better viewing experience.

So, as I think out load, no, there is no perfect camera.

principally all in favor. I've long been waiting for a super compact, decent and affordable FF ILC.

Sony A7C delivers on size: super compact, with EVF, with fully articulating touchscreen, and with a beefy enough power pack and enough grip.

But ... unfortunately Sony cut too many corners here: EVF is sorry tiny low-rez peep hole, rear display is ultra low- rez (less than 1M dots), no front dial hurts, monofunctional EV comp dial was and is always wrong.

And Sony totally lost me with the price. At € 999 body only I would still have seriously considered it. At € 2000+ (body) I would consider it if it had A7R IV innards and A7S III user interface and decent EVF and main screen.

So ... waiting for Canon EOS RP II.

The new concept is: They replaced the viewfinder with something that will soon be called view indicator or framing indicator.

Some people really don’t want to see what they are shooting exactly. So the surprise will be remained until they offload their images to their computer. This inherits a lot of fun!
