Ricoh GXR/A12 50mm Review
Base / Tripod Mount
The GXR has a small built-in flash that gives you around 4.5m range at F2.5. As with other Ricoh models you can set the flash power output manually or leave it to its own devices. The flash is raised by pressing a button on the rear of the body (it's doesn't pop up automatically) - this button is then used to cycle between the various flash modes (off, on, red-eye, slow-sync, auto).
The GXR has a small green lamp (that produces a surprisingly bright light) on the front plate, meaning you don't have to flip the flash to gain focus in low light. It's not the most discreet solution but it's less disturbing than having a strobing flash pointed at you. The AF illuminator can be disabled via a menu option.
The GXR's flash hot shot (or to be more accurate, its 'accessory shoe') accepts a new dedicated bounce unit, the GF-1, which gives you full TTL auto. The shoe is also used for the optional VF-2 electronic viewfinder (there's a small data port on on the back of the camera just under the shoe).
In this section we'd ordinarily be talking about the lens mount and showing you the camera's sensor, but this is no ordinary camera, and there's no lens mount as such. There is, however, a sliding mount system for attaching the lens/sensor units. These slide into place along guide rails and click in to place. It's easy to change units (though you do need to turn the camera off to switch lenses) - removing them is simply a case of holding down the lever on the front of the body whilst sliding the unit out.
Ricoh indicated to use that its engineers are looking at expanding the scope of the GXR system and are studying the potential introduction of non camera units (such as printers, storage devices and even a compact projector). Interestingly when we spoke to them they didn't discount the idea of allowing other companies to produce their own accessories, presuming, of course, that enough people buy into the system to make it an appealing market for others to join. Our Ricoh contact was, however, keen to stress that no such conversations had yet taken place.
The sliding mount is fast and easy to use.
