Ricoh A12 50mm vs. Canon G11

Camera settings:

  • Ricoh GRX/A12 50mm: Manual exposure, ISO 200, JPEG Fine, Manual WB
    Default Parameters (Standard), Self-Timer
  • Canon PowerShot G11: Manual mode, ISO 80, Default Image Parameters,
    Manual white balance, Self-Timer
Ricoh GXR/A12 50mm
Canon G11
4.4 MB JPEG (4288 x 2848)
3.6 MB JPEG (4416 x 3312)

Despite the G11 capturing the image on a much smaller sensor than the Ricoh GXR/A12, in good light and at base ISO there is hardly any visible difference. Both cameras deliver good detail. The G11 uses a tad more sharpening but at the same time blurs the finest low contrast detail a little more. This is likely due to a combination of noise reduction and diffraction (due to the small sensor). The tone curve and color response are very similar.
