Compared to... Canon EOS 500D (Rebel T1i)

This is our standard studio scene comparison shot taken from exactly the same tripod position. Lighting: daylight simulation, >98% CRI. Crops are 100%. Ambient temperature was approximately 22°C (~72°F). Camera settings as per previous pages.

Panasonic GF1 (Raw) vs. Canon EOS 500D (Raw)

Once again the Canon EOS 500D benefits far less from the switch from JPEG to raw than the GF1 (though taking Canon's texture smoothing noise reduction out of the equation does remove the slightly 'plastic' look from the shadow areas). As with all these comparisons the differences aren't huge, and certainly won't impact on images viewed at normal viewing sizes, but once again there's no getting away from the fact that the GF1 (like the G1 it's based on) is capable of capturing a subtlety of detail that puts it ahead of most consumer DSLRs - just as long as you use good glass and are prepared to accept you'll need to shoot raw to actually realize its full potential.
