Olympus E-P1 (RAW) vs. Nikon D5000 (RAW)

Olympus E-P1
Nikon D5000
8.9 MB JPEG (4032 x 3024)
3.4 MB JPEG (4288 x 2848)

This comparison, now uses a raw converter that fully supports the E-P1 (albeit one still not quite seeming to get the same level of detail seen in the JPEGs). It's nice to be able to report that, with the E-P1, Olympus has removed almost all of the resolution gap that existed between its SLRs and those of the market leaders. Per pixel sharpness and overall detail are as good as the D5000.

The only area where the D5000 is noticeably better is in it's handling of extreme highlights (the bright parts of the paperclips), where - as we've seen elsewhere - the E-P1 tends to clip rather harshly. The key message here though, is that the E-P1 appears to be easily capable of results that match equivalent 'full size' SLRs.
