Olympus C-3040Z Review
Top of camera controls
The C-3040Z refocuses (AF focus mode) when you stop zooming, so for example zooming from wide to half tele as soon as you let go of the zoom lever the camera will autofocus just as though you'd half-pressed the shutter release.

Program Auto Exposure

(selected aperture F2.8 with +0.7 EV exposure compensation)
Shutter Priority Auto Exposure
(selected shutter speed 1/3s with +0.7 EV exposure compensation)
Full Manual Exposure
For recording movie clips, press the shutter release to start / stop recording. There are two quality modes available HQ and SQ, both shoot QuickTime Motion JPEG (.MOV) @ 12.5 fps with or without Audio. Maximum recording times:
Again, Olympus ensure that their are plenty of manual exposure options, a huge range of aperture and shutter speeds along with an extended range of shutter speeds in full manual. On annoyance that is still here (from the C-3030Z) is the ease with which you can accidentally dial-in an exposure compensation without noticing (it's easy to knock the left/right arrows on the 4-way controller).
Zoom Control Function
|In Record Mode||In Play Mode|
Zooms focal length towards full wide (35 mm). The zoom controller operates at only one speed, it takes 2.15 seconds to go from full tele to full wide.
|Zoom into displayed
Magnifies currently displayed image in steps: 1.5x, 2.0x, 2.5x, 3.0 x. Use the 4-way controller (rear) to move around the magnified image.
|Reset image zoom /
Returns image to normal view if magnified, otherwise enters thumbnail view mode (2 x 2, 3 x 3 or 4 x 4 thumbnails; selectable in the play mode menu).
Rear of camera controls
The back of the C-3040Z is relatively straightforward, all the important controls are within reach of your thumb, the profusion of icons surrounding the buttons can be a little confusing at first but become second nature after a little use.
Toggles through the flash modes: Auto Flash, Auto with Anti Redeye, Flash On (Fill-in).
Macro / metering
Macro focus mode allows a minimum auto focus distance of 20 cm (7.9 in) instead of 80 cm (normal focus mode).
|Auto Exposure Lock
The C-3040Z has two AE-L modes, single (for one shot) or multi (for all shots until released), you can select between OFF, single or multi from the record mode menu. Pressing OK with AE-L enabled measures and locks exposure.
|LCD Display Switch
Switches the LCD live preview on or off. By default the LCD is off at power up, though you can set it to come on through the Custom setting of the "All Reset" menu.
In record mode tapping this button twice in quick succession reviews the last image taken. Playback magnify is available in this review mode.
Enters or leaves (without saving settings) the menu for the current mode. Here's my gripe (same as C-3030Z)... If you make changes in the menu and forget to press OK and instead press Menu you lose your changes.
Selects current image for deletion, requires a press of the OK button to confirm deletion.
Toggles a tag against the current image for printing on compatible DPOF printers.
|Protect / Un-protect
Toggles the read-only flag of the current image, protects against accidental deletion.
Enters / leaves on-screen menu (described later in this review).
