Here you can see the different approach to noise reduction even more clearly; Nikon is doing very little luminance NR at all, meaning the output looks 'grainy' but still has some detail, and still looks vaguely 'photographic'. By comparison Canon's heavier NR produces less measurable 'noise' but the output looks dirty, messy and lacking in fine detail. Although choosing between these two is a little like being asked whether you'd like to be shot or hanged, there is a an argument for applauding Nikon for taking the decision to keep noise reduction to a minimum. It's a lot easier to add noise reduction later (using third party software) than it is to take away excessive in-camera NR (which is impossible to remove).
Ultimately, however, we're splitting hairs here; you'd not want to use ISO 1600 on either camera (or pretty much any compact) for any photography that matters, and whether you prefer the P5000 or G7 output is, again, down to personal preference.
