Nikon D1H Review
Rear of Camera Controls
Rear of the D1H are several sets of controls: Across the top left and right are two groups of "thumb buttons" and the main command dial, below this the 4-way controller (which can be locked by turning the surrounding dial), bottom right corner you can see repeated controls (dial / AF-ON button) for shooting in the portrait orientation. To the bottom left we have the control panel LCD and set of five buttons which are normally covered by a metal door held in place by a magnetic catch. Each of the controls are described in more detail below:
The D1H is a shooting priority camera, a half-press of the shutter release will turn the monitor off and ready it for the next shot. In play mode this button turns the LCD monitor off and on.
When an image is displayed pressing delete will display an "Delete Images , Yes?", press delete once more to delete the current image. You can also delete in record review mode (described above).
Auto Exposure and Auto Focus Lock
|AF-ON||Auto Focus Start
An alternative to half-pressing the shutter release, starts auto focus. In combination with custom setting 4 (auto focus activation) this can be used for triggering auto focus independently of the shutter release button.
In shooting mode where AF point selection is enabled the 4-way controller is used to choose AF points. In playback mode (or after pressing the monitor button) this control reverts to image navigation / menu movement. This control can be locked by turning the surrounding dial.
Display or cancel the camera menu which now includes shooting options and all custom functions. (Described later in the review).
|FUNC||Image review / play
mode only: Magnify
Pressing the FUNC button with a review image displayed magnifies the image and allows you to scroll around it using the 4-way controller. This is a new feature to the D1H and is very welcome (it would have been nice to have had more than one zoom level). This features is also available in record review mode (the image shown immediately after taking a shot).
|Image review / play
mode only: Protect
Protects or un-protects the current image. This places a read-only flag on the image file and stops it from being accidentally deleted or deleted using a 'delete all images' option. It does NOT protect the image from a card format.
Notable improvement: New improved menu system, has a range of options from shooting to playback and all of the custom functions now with full text descriptions and icon indicators. Image magnify in review / play mode by pressing the FUNC button.
