Canon EOS 5D Mark III

22.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor | Digic 5+ image processor | 61-point AF

What we like:

  • Sophisticated AF system with cross-type AF points all over frame
  • Sharper Raws than predecessor
  • 6fps shooting with good buffering
  • Full manual video controls

What we don't:

  • AF subject tracking capabilities lagging
  • Dynamic range is not as good as competition
  • No programmable Auto ISO

The latest incarnation of Canon's enthusiast full-frame 5D series is the EOS 5D Mark III. The camera has been improved over its predecessor in most areas and comes with a 22MP full-frame sensor, 6 frames per second continuous shooting, and 1080p video at 24, 25 or 30 fps, offering the high quality intra-frame (All-I) compression method and greater audio control.

A 61-point AF system with 41 cross-type points work in concert with a 63-zone metering sensor to help nail focus and exposure.

While the 5D III’s AF system can’t hold a candle to the latest iterations of Nikon’s 51-point 3D AF tracking when it comes to capturing moving subjects or automatically focusing on faces, it’s extremely accurate when shooting static subjects using Canon's fast prime lenses and plenty good enough for numerous other scenarios. It's certainly a huge step up from the relatively basic AF systems found in its predecessor as well as the lower-end EOS 6D.

"Although currently outclassed in most areas by its main rival the Nikon D810, the EOS 5D Mark III is in almost every respect a better camera than its predecessor "

Although currently outclassed in most areas by its main rival the Nikon D810, the EOS 5D Mark III is in almost every respect a better camera than its predecessor and an extremely enjoyable photographic tool. It also has a reputation for being a tough workhorse in heavy-use professional environments. If you’re a Canon user looking to upgrade from an older APS-C or full-frame camera, the EOS 5D III is an obvious choice.
