At the top end of the ISO scale the size of the XT's sensor starts to make a massive difference to noise, and the amount of noise reduction (which of course also removes detail). To be fair, there aren't any other bridge cameras that offer ISO 800 or 1600, and the S9000's results at ISO 1600 compare well to many of its competitors at ISO 400. They're too noisy for anything other than fairly small prints, but they are far from unusable.
