Canon PowerShot G2 Review
Common to both Record and Play modes is the setup menu (second tab on the menus). You can easily switch between tabs by pressing the JUMP (macro) button.
Enables or disables the sounding of a beep used for menus, selecting options, confirming focus and shutter release.
Two brightness levels are available for the LCD. Switching to the brighter setting gave the LCD about the same brightness as the G1's at the normal setting.
Playback volume controls the volume of sound played back for movie clips. There is no voice annotation mode on the G1. In record mode this setting controls the volume of the fake shutter release sound (nice - sarcasm).
Auto Power Down controls the power down of the camera, when enabled the camera will automatically power down after three (3) minutes of inactivity to a "stand by" state where it can be woken with the press of the shutter release.
Set the internal camera clock along with display date format:
Format the CF card, displays current card usage (so you don't accidentally format the card full of images) and requires a selection of "OK" before it begins. It's worth noting that this performs the equivalent of a "Quick Format" under Windows / DOS, simply wiping the FAT & Directory table without actually reformatting all blocks on the device.
| Select the menu language:
There's now just one G2 made for all markets, thus the extended language selection which also includes Chinese!
Shortcut - pressing SET and JUMP together will jump to the Language menu (when in MENU mode).
Allows selection of output video system, useful for display on different TV systems.
Pressing the MENU button while in playback mode displays the play menu over the current image (a black image has been used here for clarity).
Enters single frame protect mode, much the same as single frame delete mode the key icon is displayed in the top left corner of the display, you can use the left and right arrows to scroll through images and just press SET to protect/unprotect (set the file attribute to read-only) an image. Press MENU to return to the playback menu.
Enters rotate mode (same operational style as delete / protect). Rotates an image by 90 degrees at a time (clockwise). It's worth noting that the JPEG file itself is not rotated but rather the orientation is stored in the JPEG header, this is only recognized correctly by Canon's own TWAIN driver.
Erases all images on the CF card (or current folder). Does not erase protected images. Requires an OK confirmation to an OK / Cancel prompt.
Begins a slide show of all or selected images, you can select images from slide show mode and place them into one of three show groups, each image can be shown for between 3 and 30 seconds (or manually move to the next image using the remote control).
Images are shown with the current display settings (information overlaid or not).
A DPOF compatible print order / number of copies tool which marks images for printing using a compatible DPOF printer / photo finishing booth.
