Let's start by comparing the EOS 7D to its little brother, the EOS 50D. Unsurprisingly the tone curves and color response on these two cameras are near identical. However, due to the combination of slightly better sharpness on a pixel level and its higher nominal resolution the EOS 7D manages to squeeze visibly more detail out of our studio scene.

Overall at base ISO, with default settings and the right lens the Canon EOS 7D produces impressive image detail - arguably the best that we've seen so far on an APS-C DSLR. At the same time the image output is clean, free of artifacts and ready to use out of the box without any further tweaking. As expected the tonal range and colors are very similar to other DSLRs in the Canon line-up.
