In another improvement over the EOS 10D the selection of color space has now been separated from image parameter. This means that you can independently select the sRGB or Adobe RGB color spaces and also have parameter settings applied. Note that images taken in the Adobe RGB color space have their filename prefixed with an underscore (_) this complies with DCF 2.0 (Exif 2.21). Note that in these samples the Adobe RGB image has not been converted to sRGB and so to view it correctly you will have to load it into a color space aware photo application and assign the Adobe RGB color space. Below each sample is the CIE u'v' Color Distribution chart; larger gray triangle approximately represents the range of color which the human eye can resolve, the inner triangle the available gamut in each color space (sRGB or Adobe RGB).
Custom Parameter Sets
The EOS 20D allows you to create up to three user defined custom image parameter sets. Just like the EOS 10D the 20D provides five levels of adjustment (plus or minus two levels) for parameters contrast, sharpness, saturation and color tone. While useful it's perhaps not as flexible as it could have been with a wider latitude of adjustment and increased number of steps.
Adjusting the tone alters the shape of the 'S curve' used to map the linear image data captured by the sensor into the correct gamma. A lower contrast setting maintains more of the original data's dynamic range but leads to a flatter looking image. A higher contrast setting stretches the grayscale (dark to light) of the image and could lead to clipping of both shadow detail and highlights.
Color saturation adjustment
Saturation adjustment allows you to control the strength of color in the final image. The latitude of adjustment in this case is probably about right without getting into really de-saturated images or 'Disney color'.
Color tone adjustment
Color tone subtly adjusts the hue of the image, a negative setting makes color appear more reddish, a positive setting makes color appear more yellowish.
