We'll seen full size samples for the R6 but virtually.nobody has samples (resized or not) from the R5. There are some full size images on the Canon website though so I find it very strange that they're insisting samples are resized. How bad can it be? The images on the official website look decent, it's 45mp and has a new AA filter... seems silly to delay the inevitable!?

Did DPReview even ask for clarification? Pre-production maybe.. but people are making the decision to buy these cameras without knowing what the still image quality is like.

I saw 8k video in low light from the r5, banding everywhere. It was bad.

I saw the links ThoughtsRUs shared...they not under any circumstances look incredible, makes me wonder why he says that. Surely there are better full Rez samples from R5 out there. I was also wondering why a 45 mega pixel sensor needs AA? I any case this is pre-prod I’m sure Canon will sort this out.

I hope the R5 succeeds. Today I shoot Sony A7riii and have wonderful great lenses but I welcome the competition from Canon in the mirror less realm, if it is what it appears it be then it will be a great tool.

That article is really BS!! Why does the dual CFexpress/UHS-II format become a problem for the Canon R5 with 45 MP, when Sony a7R IV has only two UHS-II card slots for an even larger pixel count (61.2MP)?

canon is currently trying to support four different lens mounts, that are not all compatible with each other.

it's one of the biggest fails in the history of cameras, and it proves that canon doesn't have the foresight to plan ahead, which makes it a poor platform choice in any mount.

canon didn't improve their situation with rf-mount, 50/1.2 & 28-70/2 vs. fixed f/11 aperture supertelephotos proves that they know that they can't compete with sony/nikon/panasonic, so they are desperately trying to find a niche with weird impractical lenses, that most people don't want.

MILC man, so much of what you said is incorrect I don't even know where to start.

Somewhere along the way you were convinced that Canon wasn't been the creator of lenses that nearly every photographer in the world compares every other lens to.

There is a long history of Canon f/1.2L and f/1.4L primes before that. There were even autofocus f/1.0 lenses and even a 200mm f/1.8. Right at this moment, everyone is doing it again. The new generation of RF f/1.2 primes and the f/2 zoom are being viewed by many as the benchmark for all other lenses.

The 3 adaptors have different features, they're not created to work with different versions of lenses. All EF and EF-S lenses work on any EF-RF adaptor. The only lenses that do not work on the RF mount are the EF-M lenses, which were designed exclusively to be for a compact mirrorless system.

The M mount is designed as a compact system. It is not compatable with any of Canons other mounts, but doesn't need to be as it sells well in its own right.
All EF lenses can be used natively on APSC and Canon APSC cameras have been the best selling ILC bodies of the digital era.
Canons adaptors allow the use of all EF and EFS lenses on the RF mount. Two of those adaptors bring additional functionality to those lenses (the control ring and a filter drop in).
Canon has been and still is the dominant camera maker in the digital era, so perhaps they understand the market better than 'experts' like MILC. The RF mount will eventually supersede the EF/EFS mounts, much as EF superseded the FD mount. It will take time because of the sheer volume of EF / EFS lenses out there.

Using external recorder bit is nasty lie since Sony has not said anything about it, in fact looks like the main point of a7s3 is to provide excellent 4k from camera.

In my opinion (not confirmed) that on 4k it would thrash anything Canon has to offer.

Because some of those owners might consider the total package in which case a <6% drop in linear resolution might not be of much importance. Even before taking into account the effects of the improved low-pass filter.

You don't understand correctly, and that's the problem. First the R5 is not inferior. You should have known this before posting. Were you too lazy to look at the specs between the two. 3 seconds on the interweb thingy will show you that even the EOS R has better DR and lower noise than that 5 1/2 yr old 5DSr. And the R5 is supposed to be even better. With the R5 you also get a smaller lighter body, excellent IBIS, much faster FPS, significantly better video, dual pixel AF, AF on 100% of the sensor, touchscreen LCD, a tilt-swivel LCD,. and on and on, I'm going to hit the character limit soon, so I'll stop here. The 6mp resolution different is negligible at those sizes; also thanks to the IBIS in the R5 Canon could always (via a firmware update) add a Hi-Res mode like Sony, Panasonic, or Olympus. If the 5DSr was even 1/2 the price of the R5 it would still be an easy hard pass for me.

do you understand that doesnt mean anything? Alexa 65 shoots 6K but have 2-3 times better IQ than 8K sensor Red Monstro, 6K Venice or 4K Alexa LF?
oh also Alexa 65 is way better than 12K scanned Imax film as well...

Actually, the video has too much yellow and green. Look at the sky at 0:36 - looks more green than blue. Of course the yellow/green push could of been an artistic choice by the videographer.

Its a hybrid of the A7R4, A9ii and A7Siii.
It some ways it is not as good as the combo, a little less resolution than 7R4 and slower sensor readout than 9ii.
It many ways it is better than the combo, IBIS, 12 fps mech shutter, 8k raw

It is easy to say overall it is a better camera than the A7siii, A7R4, and A9ii combined, because it costs so much less and you don't have to carry 3 cameras. And because it does things none of those cameras can do.

The R5 also seems to offer a more intelligent AF system than any Sony, although the Sony's are very good. It also seems to replicate the 20 fps e-shutter of the a9II but at an astounding 45 MP!

And as we've talked about before, if you want 35 MP at 30 fps, you can shoot 8K with high shutter speeds, and extract the stills from the video. I can't wait to try that out.

The nonsense you two write - I would say you should both team up - but I'm not sure you haven't already.

• The A7sIII doesn't exist. It is impossible to compare anything to something that doesn't exist.
• The A9/II has an electronic shutter that is only 1 stop slower than a traditional mechanical shutter. The read out speed of the R5 isn't known, but the R6/1DXIII has Canon's fastest electronic shutter and it is ≈1.4 stops slower than the A9/II. The R5 will be much slower again as it has much more to read out. The idea that it 'replaces' the A9/II is simply ludicrous.
• The A7rIV offers more resolution than the R5 (or any FF camera) and likely has better IQ, AF and battery life. The IBIS is claimed to be better but has not been tested.

'Canon colours' is a chimera. The RF lens system is currently full of gaps. I know that you think the lenses are made out of angel dust and can heal the sick, but the reality is they are just lenses like every other manufacturer's and Sony has a much full fuller line up than Canon with the advantage of third party and more adapting options.

Of course Canon will flesh their line up over time, but currently RF isn't advantageous over having an e-mount.

The A9ii can only shoot at 12 fps with lossless raws. It can only shoot at 10 fps in LED lighting (if you don't want banding), and with most Sony FE lenses it can never shoot 20 fps.
It also has only about half the resolution of the R5.
It also has IBIS 2.3 stops worse than the R5.
It also has very poor video specs and no log profiles for getting the most DR.

I could go on all day on why the R5 is a better camera than the A9, but it won't stop a dedicated Sony troll like you.

What matters though, and why you are here crying so much, is that many people can see the R5 is a much better camera. And many more who still use Canon lenses want to switch back.
They know you are a troll and won't listen to a word you say. They won't listen to anyone here. They only know the R5 is overall a better camera. And a large number of them will buy the R5,

Big, heavy and expensive any brand can do. As a professional I want the opposite. Reliable but light. Compare EF and RF 85 1.2. weight and price. Then the sensors. Canon missed the sensor train. The D750 had a much better sensor than any Canon and today any Sony with 5 years has a better sensor than Canon. It is not a question of brand name. Sony engineers are more competent, that's all.

The claim is that Sony and Nikon hand-off pitch and yaw correction to the lens IS when a lens with OIS is attached, but Panasonic and Canon do that PLUS still enact pitch and yaw compensation on the sensor.

This is why their systems are better - although the Panasonic system is only .5 stop better than the Sony system according to CIPA.

Canon claims to be doing something further - somehow 'trimming' the motion sensor response to the individual lens attached for even higher levels of compensation.

A few things to consider;

• the translation of the sensor by the IBIS system is predominantly the same across all systems.

• Pitch & yaw is only one of the axes of compensation, so whilst you might be getting 8 Stops in pitch and yaw you might still only get 5 in rotation, say.

• Zoom lenses by design will allow different levels of compensation at different settings because the imaging circle size isn't constant.

Maybe not completely ignored, AFAIC I wonder how the seemingly higher temperature levels on average will affect IQ via sensor (dark) noise.

Yes, it is probably crazy what they did, I fully agree with you here. Now it's too late to speculate why they wanted to squeeze an ultra high resolution video to a small sealed body without dedicated cooler... Just crazy, technologically but probably also marketing wise.

Anyway, a big learning for other camera makers to not copy this "marketing over physics" path.

the only reason that canon released their overheating data was because the internet forced 'em do it.

canon could have posted it from the start, with all of their hype documentation, but they didn't.

that sort of thing reflects poorly on the canon brand, and it's not the only example of their disingenuous behavior with this r5/r6 release.

Nonsense - CR published this data in part as a rumor well before launch and then it’s been available in full from launch - it was (and is) well received by all but the attack mutts.........😊

Canon even published a full sheet with the thermal limits. Sony never told anyone that the a6300, a7rII or a7sII would overheat. They even released a firmware update to override the overheat error, so you could literally burn your sensor.

The two DO F11 lenses look better than I expected. They are both under $900 (less than a Sony 70-300) and have a very long reach. They are also rather small and light.
I am still debating on them. They are not as good a s $1500 lens, but since I can sharpen and reduce a 45MP image to 24MP, I bet they'll be fine,

You should know by now that people say all sorts of crazy stuff online, esp. when they disagree. Funny, I've maintained the possibility that a lot of the people creating negative posts about any brands other than Sony are part of a coordinated attack...only that may have some truth to it, as many others have noticed it.

these canon cameras obviously don't have enough cooling capacity to do real video work... the fact that panasonic uses a fan, and the r5 doesn't, should have been the first clue.

Clearly I need to post some official facts provided by Canon here to counteract the propaganda campaign being run by their own "ambassadors" here. This will take 2 posts to fit the info:

1. Canon had to include a warning message before the start of any video recording to tell the user the estimated recording time available based on the current temperature.

2. Canon's official estimated record times before the camera overheats and shuts down are all based upon a starting ambient temperature of only 73 degrees. Canon says that at a higher ambient temperature recording times will be greatly reduced.

3. Canon says that recording times will also be reduced by just having the camera turned on for framing, lighting, focusing, playback, etc.

4. At an outside temperature of 73 degrees, 8K 30p recording can only be for a max of 20 minutes. At higher temps recording will only last a few minutes.

5. Canon says once the camera overheats, you have to turn off the camera completely, put it in the shade and point a fan at it if possible. You can't use it for framing the next shot, or for anything else until it cools down.

6. Forget about playback on a hot day: Playing back recordings also generates heat, although not as fast as actual recording does.

7. Here are the official Canon estimated cool-down times once the camera overheats:

8K/30p Wait Time Minutes: 10 Record time before next shutdown: 3
8K/30p Wait Time Minutes: 20 Record time before next shutdown: 8
4K/60p Wait Time Minutes: 10 Record time before next shutdown: 10

8. Canon does not say that opening the back screen or using external power, etc. will make any difference, so we have to assume it will not.

Funny how the R5's can shoot unlimited 4k 10 bit 4:2:2 470Mbps video which is way better than the best Sony today, and the Sony fans call it "bad".

I'd much rather have 10 bit 4:2:2 470Mbps video stabilized with 8 stop IBIS and shoot for an unlimited amount of time, vs. the garbage Sony tries to pass off as video.

Sony has not even released the official specs for the new A7S III ! You must be basing your opinion on what they are saying on the rumor sites, which doesn't sound that bad to me:

4k 10-Bit 4:2:2 up to 120fps
Max video ISO 409,600
9.44 million dot EVF
No overheating and no recording time limits

Apparently no 8K, but as we are learning from the R5 debacle, 8K in small lightweight cameras is proving to be not very practical, which no doubt explains why no other camera makers have attempted it.

But it's definitely to be expected. No company has done 8k RAW or 4k120 yet in this kind of camera....so clearly no one has really solved it yet.

Sounds like Sony might have in the a7sIII but mostly because of the smaller MP count and non-8k.

And no one is likely to do 8k raw or 4k 120p in camera for a while unless Panasonic pulls out a surprise, The A7S3 needs an external recorder to shoot 4k120p and cann't shoot 8k raw at all.

And what do you use 4k 120p for? Slow motion, 15 minutes of 120p video is an hour of 30p video.

Where are you getting all of these facts about the A7SIII?

The 8k is useless, it is just gimmick.
It overheat in less than 3 mins and take hour to cool down.
Don't get me wrong the R5 is a great camera, just forget about the 8k.

And downsampled 4K as well...

In its class the R5 offers about 20 min of 8K recording....other cameras in this class offer zero min of 8K recording. So I'll take 20 min over zero any day.

Of course you will see all sorts of uses for this type of functionality...you will see people getting B-roll, short action shots, some drone footage, all sorts of clips. The cropping capabilities will be amazing with 8K.

Now of course if one wants to record 8K for a very long period of time, then one should use a larger more expensive cinema rig.

I think the Sony fans are freaking out because their new camera coming out has only 12MP and may not even have IBIS...it will be in essence a FF version of the GH5s. So they attack any other brand competitor...it's their well known tactic.

The R5 overheat quickly when shooting 8k.
If you stay under shade avoid sunlight, it can last slightly longer around 4.5min before shut down.

that is why I preordered the same day it was released. I was sold on the 1DXIII dual pixel AF and 12fps and 4K/120 with autofocus 4/2/2 10 bit. All the rest are welcome perks. A bit of a risk but I think it was a reasonably safe bet.

this question of VAT is a misunderstanding of how it works in the USA.
There are taxes depending on each state laws. It goes from zero to maybe some 20 %. According to the place you live, you will thus pay more for the same camera. Funny, isn't it ?

The subject really expands to the Low-High OPERATING TEMPERATURE range of digital gear. The outside air temperature combined with camera operating heat build up can combine to bring one's picture taking ability to a DEAD END. I'm not even talking about movie making, just stills. I've experienced the DEAD END results only with digital. After a very long career with film, I just love digital, but I never missed a shot with film, compared to the digital over the limit HEAT DEAD END. Forceth to stay out of the "too cold" and out of the "too hot" with digital is not ideal for taking pictures.

That is a very silly headline. Parroted here by someone even sillier. The article contains a table from the R5 manual setting out the recording time limits of each mode. Just like very other hybrid camera that shoots 8k RAW 30, oversampled 4k etc.
Imagine a headline from a motoring journalist: "New Ferrari comes with temperature gauge. Ferrari cautions owners car will overheat if driven with dry radiator"

@A Owens: spot on! The recording limits are just like all of the other hybrid ILCs...it's just that some are freaking out about it for this camera when for others it was just accepted.

I'm not a Canon fan, I've never owned a Canon. But this is just nonsense. This is the first Canon camera I've wanted to own in a decade.

You are going to run out of space on your card before these so-called issues arise, and the vast majority will probably never even encounter them.

Actually, your comment is complete nonsense. Overheating and having the camera shut down right in the middle of shooting is a lot more than just a "so-called" problem. I'm curious - what would you consider an actual problem with a camera - perhaps having it explode in your face ?

@mikegt, Remove the card from the slot and shoot and record externally and you can shoot all day at 8k or super high quality 4k full sensor down sample. with no heat problems.

Kona Mike: You forgot to mention that the camera also has to be operated inside a freezer or located above the Arctic Circle.

None of your proposed "workarounds" have been shown to work reliably. Plus recording externally is a costly & awkward pain in the ass.

I have a much better solution: Buy from a camera company that doesn't treat its customers as marks to be cheated or abused.

Obviously you don't know anything about what causes heat in digital cameras. The main source of heat is not the battery. It is the sensor and the chips used to process the data coming off the sensor. The battery may get warm and there are other components that can heat up as well, but when shooting high data rate video your main sources are going to be the sensor and the main data processor. On cameras without IBIS a big heat sink is stuck on the sensor, but this isn't possible with IBIS because the sensor needs to be able to move rapidly to counteract shake. On professional video cameras (and the prosumer Panasonic SR1H) an internal cooling fan is used to cool the sensor and electronics which allows such cameras to avoid overheating.

The general consensus across all sites is that Canon has launched a blinding class leading cam. 20 mins of continuous shooting at these massive resolutions is being described as a revolution. This is not a solution because the majority of the heat is not from the battery, but the CPU. Luckily, this issue is not a real issue in the real world.

The lunacy here is a guy (multiple guys or the same one. Not sure) suggesting we should all hang a USB battery from our cameras for 4 hours to overcome a battery Life problem rather than to accept the limitation, keep a couple of spares in the bag and take 30 seconds to change the battery every two hours.

This denial culture now seems to have extended to cameras.

You forgot the sensor which gets very hot. And it is a real world issue, Canon has confirmed it, so you are being quite dishonest here.

Using an external battery will not solve the problem. The battery is not the main source of the heat in this particular case.

A kind of definitive solution might be to have 4x spare R5 bodies in your bag. When your camera signalizes overheating, you just quickly pull out a cold body, swiftly swap the lens and you can continue your recording - even during hot summer days under direct sunshine.

To conclude, with five cameras, smartly used in sequence, one will have zero problem with R5 overheating even during the longest recording sessions.

Sorry, you can't shoot past 30 minutes no matter what. According to the article at https://nofilmschool.com/canon-eos-r5-and-eos-r6-likes, Canon has placed a 29 minute and 59 second record limit on ALL 4K recordings.

Also, if you are going to shoot in 4K then why spend $4,000 on the R5 ? You can save an enormous amount of money by instead getting the R6, or save even more with a Sony A7 III, or the Panasonic G7 which shoots decent 4K for only $499 !

This is just 100% not true. The chart provided by Canon is very clear that normal 4k 30 is not in any way limited by heat, only the high frame rate 4k, and extreme oversampled 4k and 8k are, and frankly, the limits are very generous given the compact nature of the camera. This is fake issue. The 29 minute record limit is the same as every other camera except Panasonic, and will not be a problem for 99% of normal use cases. If it is, you should be buying a cinema camera, and any real filmmaker knows this.

The way I look at it: with Canon I can take up to about 20 min of 8K RAW video. Astounding. With other cameras I can take zero..nada...zilch of 8K. So I'll take the Canon, thank you very much.

First, "Thoughts R Us" is paid by Canon to post here so we can regard his words as effectively being straight from the Canon marketing department.

Second, Canon says that you can't go past 29 minute and 59 seconds in any mode. This is for tax reasons, not heat. The good news is that you can resume recording immediately. But to claim that you can shoot 4K *continuously* is not correct.

Lastly, the R5 does overheat, it is a real issue, others have reported it, and Canon has confirmed it.

You must be one of those idiots who also think that Covid-19 is a fake pandemic or just like the flu. My Aunt recently died from this disease which is in fact all too real.

4K/120 10 bit is a pretty big deal for me. None of the above offers that. The A7Siii will be the biggest competitor, but it will not be much cheaper and it will likely have a subpar resolution (12Mp rumoured) for still photography. I am curios to see what else it will have, but I needed a Canon for my long and fast L glass, cheaper than selling and replacing with Sony glass.

Sarman 2525 Sorry, Canon itself stated that oversampled 4K will overheat. It's the pixel binned 4K30 that doesn't. So you're getting worse 4K than the market standard of 5 years ago. R5 is a great alternative to the Sony A7R3 or A7R4 for stills, just not video.

You are confused.
The canon can shoot 4K 30p 10 bit for unlimited time without overheating. No Sony can.
In the past a good number of Sonys overheated in less than 20 minutes shooting an inferior 4K bit. There is a good video of the A7iii overheating at 72 degrees in under 20 minutes as well as many posts.
In this mode Canon uses 2x2 pixel binning like the A7R4, and creates 10 bit 4k video with a bit rate 4+ times more than ANY Sony camera.
Again this camera shoots 4K 10 bit video, some thing no Sony can do, and it does not overheat.
It also shoot 1 hour of slow motion video. Something no Sony can do.
It can shoot 20 minutes of 8K video something no Sony can do
It can shoot 20 minutes of RAW video something no Sony can do.
With an external USB battery it can probably shoot an hour of 8K RAW.

The issue is the A7Siii won't shoot 8K RAW, nor will an A74 if one is ever made. So Sony fans know this camera will surpass all Sony cameras for the coming months and maybe years.

From Sony forums. There are a number of video saying the same.
" I decided to test the thermals of the camera by recording 4K video and monitor for overheating.
The overheating warning sign appears after approximately 12 minutes of recording 4K video and after 19 minutes and 55 seconds of recording, the camera shuts down because of overheating (minute 07:30 in the video)."

The Sony users have some helpful tips though for mitigating all the heat issues. So that should help.

And in that same video, with the setting to heat high, they said they were able to record for hours on end for a client. A client. When it comes down to it, thats what matters, if a camera cannot do what you need it to, then you dont use it. No matter the brand.

We have to shoot to the unlimited time. This was the standard when it came to Sony.

Ps: we Sony users know that we don't have to shoot to a certain time limit. Until r5 it was hard to explain to people trolling in Sony forums.

Obviously you have not heard of companies like Red Digital, which started selling fully functional 8K video cameras over five years ago. Red cameras are over-priced to the max, but they do deliver the goods.

I own a Pocket 4K and soon a Pocket 6K, which are dedicated video cameras, plus a few others. I need small cameras more as I use as many as 5 or 5 cameras at a time. Some of my clients occasionally want photos as well as video and a hybrid is a good option to use there. I currenty use a GH5, but of course, not ideal, as focus is awful. So yes, I do show my clients respect. Hybrids have their place in Professional work.

That is so ridiculous! Sony has paved the road and done really well but also been stuck with silly design limitations. Now that Canon has produced serious contenders that possibly leaped ahead Sony will be forced to address such things at Sony users benefit. Same reason Canon users should thank Sony for forcing Canon out its comfort zone.
