Leica SL2

Leica SL2

47MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor | 20 fps continuous shooting | In-body stabilization

What we like:

  • Excellent still image quality
  • Solid, tough build
  • Ultra-high-res EVF
  • Very attractive video features

What we don't:

  • Price
  • Focus tends to "wobble" in video
  • Limited physical controls
The Leica SL2 is a high-end full-frame mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. It's built around an image-stabilized 47MP CMOS sensor and offers UHD 4K video capture at up to 60p.
The SL2 is comfortable to hold, without the sharp edges that were found on its predecessor. It's extensively weather-sealed, earning an IP54 certification. A touchscreen provides a simple and responsive way of interacting with the SL2's menus, as well as for AF point placement. A 5.76M-dot electronic viewfinder is one of the best on the market.
The SL2 is a more mature, practical and competitive product than its predecessor
The SL2 is a fast camera given its 47 Megapixel resolution, able to shoot 20 fps capture in electronic shutter mode (10 fps with mechanical). Twin UHS-II SD card slots are provided to minimize write times. Autofocus is contrast detection based, but AF acquisition is fast and focus seems accurate in based on initial testing, but with the risk of flutter as it hunts.
We haven't tested a final production SL2 yet, but our initial shooting suggests that image quality is extremely similar to the Leica Q2 and Panasonic Lumix DC-S1R, which use similar sensors. That is to say: not class-leading, but still excellent, and with more good resolution and dynamic range.
The SL2 can capture 4K/60p video (and 180 fps in Full HD), and supports Log gamma and HLG recording. Switching between still and video shooting is easy, with a unique interface for each. The camera features mic and headphone sockets, as well as a full-size HDMI port.
While we haven't yet been able to test a production-standard Leica SL2, our initial impressions are very positive. While there are undoubtedly better-value full-frame mirrorless cameras on the market, the SL2 is a more mature and practical product than its predecessor, and more competitive, too. In fact as a video camera, the SL2 is among the most capable cameras of its type.
