20MP Four Thirds sensor | In-body image stabilization | 4K/30p video capture

What we like:

  • Very good JPEG quality
  • Effective image stabilization
  • Above average battery life

What we don't:

  • Image quality behind that of peers with larger sensors
  • AF system behind the competition
  • Overly complex menus
The OM-D E-M10 IV is a compact Micro Four Thirds camera with a 20MP sensor and 5-axis in-body image stabilization. It's largely targeted toward selfie-shooters, courtesy of its flip-down LCD with easy-to-use on-screen controls.
The DSLR-shaped E-M10 IV is lightweight, and its grip makes it easy to hold for both 'normal' and selfie shooting. It has a scene-selecting Auto mode and plenty of tools for creative shooting. While it's not very customizable, the E-M10 IV has a good amount of manual controls.
Its standout features are its portability, in-body stabilization and the vast selection of lenses
The E-M10 IV focuses quickly but struggles to keep moving subjects in focus, which leaves it behind its peers with depth-aware phase-detection AF. The camera's battery life is above average and it can be charged over a USB connection.
The E-M10 IV captures 4K at up to 30p that looks good for an entry-level camera. The in-body IS system does a good job of keeping things smooth, and an electronic IS option furthers this, at the expense of a crop. The camera is light on manual controls, and lacks mic and headphone sockets.
We're pleased with the images produced by the E-M10 IV. Out-of-camera JPEGs have pleasant colors and good detail capture. Other OM System cameras that use the same sensor have low noise levels, though the E-M10's peers with larger APS-C-sized chips will perform better.
The OM-D E-M10 IV is a nice but rather average entry-level camera. Its standout features are its portability, in-body stabilization and the vast selection of lenses. Image quality and autofocus won't be best-in-class, but it still should be considered.
