Pentax K-3 Mark III

25.7MP APS-C sensor | 5-axis in-body stabilization | Large optical viewfinder

What we like:

  • Updated BSI-CMOS sensor
  • All-new autofocus system
  • Rugged build quality
  • Effective stabilization
  • Great battery life

What we don't:

  • Limited autofocus coverage area
  • Subject tracking AF performance lags mirrorless peers
  • Relatively poor buffer performance
  • Relatively bulky, complex user interface
The Pentax K-3 III is a thoroughly polished APS-C DSLR built around the Pentax K-mount.
The K-3 III fits a good number of controls onto one of the most comfortable-to-hold camera bodies on the market and is supremely customizable. This creates a fairly complex menu system and a bit of a learning curve. The rear screen is fixed but is touch sensitive and the optical viewfinder is among the largest we've seen on an APS-C DSLR.
The Pentax K-3 Mark III is shaping up to be one of the most well-rounded DSLRs we've ever seen
While we've yet to fully test the K-3 III's autofocus, Ricoh promises improved AF tracking, with subject recognition trained by machine learning. This, combined with a 101 point AF system should offer a significant step forwards, compared to existing Pentax cameras.
We've not fully tested the K-3 Mark III yet, but the early signs are that it performs very well. It appears some of the performance is aided by non-optional noise reduction applied to Raw data, but we'll need to check its impact on detail retention.
The K-3 III can shoot 4K video from a cropped region of its sensor or 1080p from its full width. It offers a reasonable array of tools to help you shoot, and its in-body image stabilizer will help smooth out handheld footage.
The Pentax K-3 Mark III is shaping up to be one of the most well-rounded DSLRs we've ever seen. With fast burst speeds, in-body stabilization, 4K video and fantastic ergonomics, it looks to be a compelling option for those who prefer an optical viewfinder.
