Despite its nominally lower resolution than most competitors in the high-end bracket of the smartphone market in our brightly lit studio scene the Apple iPhone 6 Plus performs very well and squeezes more detail out of its 8MP image sensor than some 13MP models. Thanks to a well-balanced approach to noise reduction and sharpening it is even very close to the 16MP Samsung Galaxy S5.
The lens is sharp across the frame and the color and tonality are pleasantly natural, with lower saturation and contrast than most competitors. On the downside there are higher than usual levels of luminance noise visible in the shadows and areas of plain color. The noise is very finely grained though and therefore not too intrusive. Other than that the images are very clean, without any artifacts.
