At present used prices this lens is a bargain. Funky wide open with a dreamy rendition, this lens becomes about as sharp as you can get by f4. Typical Zeiss colors, contrast, and micro contrast.

To summarize: *Soft at f1.4 *chromatic aberrations @ f1.4 *Bitingly sharp @f2.8, and ridiculously bitingly sharp from f4.0 through f8.0 *Suffers from focus shift at f-stops greater than f1.4, can be corrected using live view and DOF preview button *Don't even bother without live view if shooting other than f1.4 *worthless without tripod due to focus shift caused by non floating elements that do not adjust electro-mechanically as aperture diminishes as shutter is pressed *beautiful metal ...

I have just tested the Zeiss 50mm 1,4 and Canon 50mm 1,4 on my Canon 1Ds Mk3. Focus was approximately 1 metre on books on a shelf. At all apertures (1,4 to 8) the Canon was the clear winner (sharpness/focus) with the Zeiss appearing rather soft centre to edge. The Zeiss is being returned. This was by no means a scientific test, but rather what one could expect with your 'average day to day' usage at close range.
