Tokina was established in 1950 as Tokyo Optical Equipment Manufacturing, changing to Tokina Optical Co Ltd in 1971 then Tokina Co Ltd in 1995. Tokina makes photographic and CCTV lenses and optical filters, and following a merger, since 2012 it has been known as 'Kenko Tokina Co., ltd'.
Tokina is among the smallest of the independent lens brands but nevertheless offers a very competitive lineup of products including the excellent new 'Opera' series of lenses for Canon and Nikon DSLRs.
Tokina offers a range of ‘DX’ lenses for APS-C DSLRs as well as a
couple for full frame cameras. Its small range covers the basics, with
a certain emphasis on wideangle designs.
