Got a brother in law interested in photography. His wife has the Sony A55, I have the A77, my mom has the A33. None of us are experts. We do have a lot of lenses, Minolta and Tamron (nothing new). I need to get a camera for my brother in law that is relatively inexpensive, compared to the Sony's the rest of the family has, and can make use of our existing lens repertoire. Any ideas? No more than $400, please. Thanks --Richard Lane
I am looking to upgrade from an a33. The two cameras that I am considering are the a77II and the a7II. I mainly shoot my kids sporting events (gymnastics, swimming, which are indoor low light), football and track. I am also my church photographer, which is subdued lighting. If I go with the a77II, I can also get a used Sony 70-200 f2.8 G lens. I currently have a Minolta 70-200 f4 (beer can). If I go with the a7II, I can't upgrade my zoom lens right now. My budget is $2400.00. Also, I...
Hello, I'm shooting with a SLT-A37 with a Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM lens (non-"C" version, labelled as SLT A33/A55 compatible on the box). Everything works fine, AF works ok, stabilization works too. I just have a strange issue (?) when using the Intelligent Auto or Superior Auto modes: most indoor scenes (even at 17mm) or low-light outdoor scenes are recognized as "Macro" (the flower icon appears). With other lenses (Sony/Tamron) the same indoor scenes are not recognized as Macro (in...

I think I read about SLT mirror improvements since Sony released their first, a33 and a55, in the late summer of 2010. Wow, almost four years ago. I am still fascinated whenever I pick up my a55/Tamron 17-50/2.8 combo.... Now for the question: I wondered whether the SLT mirrors from APS-C SLTs introduced later would fit mechanically in my a55. Anybody in the know around here? And, should it fit, is it worth to upgrade the mirror? In all of my use I never saw an issue so far. Thanks for your...

According to the manual that came with my A57, engaging Steady Shot in video increases heat and therefore the possibility of video overheating. It certainly did on my A33, but it's my understanding that the video stabilization is digital, which should not generate heat in the sensor area the way the 33/55 did. So is there any benefit to turning it off for video other than you'd rather not have it on for effect? What about tripod usage to smooth panning? Page 82 says: If you observe the...
I have just picked up a Kenko M-AF 1.4x Teleplus teleconverter on eBay to use with my A33. Now it doesn't seem to work at all with the Tamron 70-300 f4.5-5.6. I was half expecting manual focus only but it is not showing or allowing me to change the aperature. It partly works with my old Minolta 28-80 AF giving me access to aperture but not autofocus. So is the problem with the A33 or the Kenko? The camera is set to release w/o lens.
Hi Everyone, I currently have an A33, and am researching options for an upgrade. Based on what I have seen/ read so far, the A77 or NEX6 seem like the options that suit me best. I am definitely not a pro- an enthusiast that likes taking a range of photos- mostly when I travel. The small size of the NEX is what is so attractive- reducing bulk/ weight while traveling the world. Currently I mostly use a 18-200mm, 50mm, 35mm, and 8mm fisheye. When I was comparing Alpha or NEX years ago (when...
