Well, I have had this lens for quite a while now, in fact it was my first 'kit' lens I bought along with Sony A7III - my first Sony full frame camera. But, ever since expanding my lens collection by the magnificent 100-400GM, excellent 16-35GM and few Batis primes the good, old 24-105 got a bit neglected. At one stage I decided to run away from the 'mainstream' documentary focal length range and try to go to extremes not normally seen by our eyes - either the wide angle (hence 16-35) or my ...

I preferably work with good primes but I was asked to shoot an event where I won't have time to change lenses. Because the price sank to CHF 1100 (CHF is roughly on par with the USD) and Sony currently offers a CHF 100 cashback, I decided to get the 24-105 G. Before I even start with this short review I can say that for 1000 bucks you get a really nice lens! This test is totally unscientific but it's my normal way of testing new lenses. The Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 is really a pleasure to travel with. Reasonable weight (1.46 pounds), fast auto-focus, sharp throughout it's range (of course depending on the individual lens one receives, mine was excellent) , 77mm filter size. Aside from a "nifty 50" (Sony f/1.8), this was the first variable I bought when I bought my Sony A7RIII. I rented the Sony 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3. That lens seemed to do a fair bit of focus hunting and while producing good images, it was a bit too slow for my ...

My Sony A7R kit was fairly complete, but the original mid-long zoom just didn't do it for me. When this new 24-105 zoom came out, I jumped on it. And how much it gets used is quite remarkable. It is relatively compact, feels well balanced on the camera and is weather-proof. The other lenses rarely come out of the bag. The quality of the prints from it is unsurpassed, and some of them are A2+.

Outstanding zoom lens trough the range of 24-105 with prime lens image quality. - Confidently packing it, just a single zoom for travel. - Sharp, fast, accurate focus, the very best zoom I ever had. - Minimal barrel distortion and chromatic aberration can easily taken care of in PP or with lens correction. - Costs a little more than other major brands, but IMO it is worth it, somewhat lighter and has much better IQ than other brands. - I’m sure, will have excellent test scores by DxO, I ...
