Sigma 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM

Announced Feb 20, 2010 •
Telephoto prime lens | Canon EF, Nikon F (FX), Pentax KAF3, Sigma SA Bayonet, Sony/Minolta Alpha | 320

I finally bit the bullet and got one of those Sigma 85mm f/1.4 in a Nikon mount. It was a bit hard going Sigma way as their reputation for building lens is not exactly stellar but then again even the Business's Big Dogs had left a few of those dogs out their shops lately. I also found it very hard to justify spending almost double the Siggy's price on Nikon's brand new counterpart given the slightly unfavourable wind coming from some few select spots on the net. A few fellow photogs from the ...

Since I'm not writing a full and detailed review, there's 3 major points I'll touch on which are: Image Quality - I've now owned this lens for 6 months and during that time, it has done nothing but impress me. Although I do love the old EX range (and Sigma lenses in general), I feel like this lens should have been the first lens in the Art line. My copy is definitely tack sharp wide open and like all other 85mm's definitely suffers from CA (although I don't find it troublesome since it's ...

This lens is something else. I have some good lenses but when I looked at my first photos with this one I was worried I'd end up cutting my retina - it is sharp . I have yet to test it properly on my Pentax K-3 but the indications are that this is maybe the only lens I have that will consistently deliver the full capabilities of its sensor. It is of a very solid polymer construction & pretty chunky. The hood has an extension for use with APS sensors & the full deal on my Pentax K-5 is ...

This is an impressive lens, I would call it perfect. I got it from a UK dealer at 75% of Danish retail price. Handling This is build like a nuclear bunker with a very nice panorama window and allthough that sounds like a serious engineering flaw I admit to comitting a false analogy. There is hardly any engineering flaws to be found here. The rubber finish is very firm rubber but it gives it a very nice grip and feel. the sound is pleasing and hardly there at all. The big glass front element ...

This lens is incredible ! Big, massive, short and impressive object,  When you use it you have an incredible sensation of power..., use it with a demoniac precision for the AF point, espescially when you make a portrait.. at 1.4 the focus point is on the border ofyour subject iris.., the deep of field is veeeeeery short and the af point or the manual focusing must be like a razor.. ultra fine and precise. So the final pict is amasing... the bockey is smooth and creamy, just a perfection for ...

Purchased in april 2012, i was lucky to get a good copy that required zero MA. AF actually works great not like the Sigma 50 1.4. Faster AF then Canon 85 1.2, slightly slower then Canon 85 1.8. Wide 1.4 aperture, quick queit HSM motor, very sharp even at 1.4, amazing bokeh, accepts 77mm filters (can share my filters with 5 of my lenses). Sigma can have questionable reliability, something I will find out about later. Watch out for frankenstein copies that are build with both old fluffy matte ...

My copy is in Nikon mount, and it has been my default portrait lens since day one. Previously i've had the "cream machine" 85 1.4 D, awesome lens but this Sigma tops it easily. Very good resolution in center of the frame, good corners and blistering fast autofocus. I have some small focusing errors on minimum distance with SB-900 attached (slight front focus at ~85cm) but once i am at 100+ cm from the subject the focus is spot on.I used this lens on following cameras: D300, D5100 and D800. Wh ...

I don't write long reviews, purely because I don'tbelieve I have the technical experience to, however I have tested this lens on my NEX-5n and simply wanted to share the experience. The lens is awesome, and is the only other lens I will use apart from my Zeiss 24mm on this body. I have uploaded some quick test shots that were done in low light, handheld @ ISO 800, I'll let you be the judge of the lens on this camera, baring in mind I've only been shooting since Christmas :) Problems: Slight ...

I've been using this lens for about a year now on my D90. I'm happy to say that it's been my go-to portrait lens 90% of the time (the other 10% being my Nikon 50mm 1.8/D and that's only for when I'm working with small groups in a small space!). The build quality is exceptional (metal) but believe me when I say the thing is HEAVY! IQ is is great and the bokeh is very smooth on it. The HSM is definitely fast a quiet just as advertised. I did discover that you cannot use this lens with a ...
