I had this lens and a couple copies of the smaller M version. I recall the larger non M version being optically better. I found this test I did on my old 6mp K110D. Even with a Promaster 1.7x converter, it was pretty good. A bit hazy but sharp wide open and just plain sharp and contrasty at f/5.6. No 70-200/300 consumer zoom of those days could beat it. So I have been shooting since the 1980's, for awhile as a professional but today more for myself. I have shot with Pentax, Yashica, Mamiya, Nikon, Canon and Olympus (EVF), I have been with Pentax since the K110d and I have worked with and purchased a ist, K110D, K200d, 2-K5's, K3, K3II and a KS2. I am careful with my equipment but I don't baby it. In Oct 2016 I purchased a KS2 kit for my wife and daughter to use when we went to Hawaii. I had a K110D years ago and it worked okay with manual A, M and K type lenses. I think I had to set some custom function to allow use of the aperture ring on the lens. Does the K500 still allow this function? Does the focus peak feature work with manual lenses? I'm not sure what is happening to the K-50/500 with the K-S1 out now, but I see the K-500 is $399. Might be a good time to get back into an SLR again. BTW, I now have a Nikon J1. I like the compact size but it struggles with noise at...
