Getting a kick out of good value, the Oly 40-150 plastic-fantastic is very high on my list of favorite lenses. Over the years I have purchased a number of them, mostly when they are on sale "refurb" at the Oly outlet for $59. No wonder the Oly camera division wasn't profitable. :O My easy BIF subjects... At the time of this writing, these are frequently available new for $100. I found one for less than that on ebay. Reading the reviews, I see it has a plastic lens mount. That's no problem, since the lens is so light and since the plastic Olympus specified is hard enough not to easily be rounded off. I tested this out at the race track vs. my adapted OM Zuiko 135/3.5. I figured it'd be a wash, with the 135 being faster and easier to focus manually, vs. this one with modern coatings. But no, ...

I can be quite picky about lenses and their performance, but this lens is as close to perfect as a zoom can be in my opinion. It is extremely light, small, Very (!) sharp, has a good contrast and a very good zoom range. It is the perfect travel companion and easily slips into a small pocket or bag. The AF is superfast and it locks on the subject so fast that one barely notices any time lagging from pressing the shutter until the picture is taken. Anything less good then? Well there is a ...
