This was my first zoom lens, and it is decent, providing good sharpness and contrast, provided there is good lighting.  Forget about using this for photographing high school/college graduations that are held indoors.  The lens is very soft wide open at 300mm, so you will have to stop down to at least f8 to get even satisfactory sharpness.  You get what you pay for, so this is a good lens for the price.  But if you want more, then you're going to have to pay thousands of dollars more for a ...

It's a great starter lens to have in your bag to complement 18-55mm or 18-105mm Nikon kit lens. Gives you that extra reach without having to pony up for 18-200mm lens. You can even pick one up used for even better price. VR works fine and it's pretty sharp all around except maybe at 200mm wide open. For the price, it's overall performance can't be faulted. Still, if I had to do it over again, I would sell my 18-105mm and buy 18-200mm. Problems: Plastic lens mount, AF slow in low light.

I really enjoyed that this lens had a the VR feature. really helpful if you have shaky hand. The ability to have a lens that has a good zoom range just under $250 is a big plus. If you are looking for a lens that simply going to be used to shoot on short ranges family gatherings some sports activities then you have a good lens.
