Does anyone have any experience using a Nikkor 400 3.5 or a 400 2.8 ED (the 30+ year old non-AF ones) on a D7100 or D850? I am trying to decide which way to go. Please don't tell me to buy a new SWM AF one - not gonna happen. I have good eyesight and used to wield a 300/2 and 400 2.8 on the end of F2's and F3's back in the day, the weight and size is not an issue.

When the TC-17e II is attached to the 400 f/2.8 lens, it seems to me to give erroneous FL in 35 mm information. It seems to be correct without a TC or with the TC-14e II but not with the TC-17. Can someone explain what I am missing with this? All comments/suggestions are appreciated.
