I've actually had both the VR and the non-VR versions of this lens. VR version I was very surprised at how good this humble kit lens was on my D800. It's very sharp, has great contrast, the VR works very well, useful zoom lens, fairly small and light. I sometimes got images that had great pop and 3D effect. The only thing I found to criticise is the sharpness in the extreme corners of the image which is really not very good and doesn't even improve a lot when stopping down. Unfortunately 85mm ...

I got this lens to compliment my Sigma 18-35 1.8 for a two lens kit for traveling with my D7500.  It is not the sharpest lens that I have in my line up, but it is sharp enough for a travel lens.  It is the softest at 85mm, but still usable for the purpose intended.  I just run it as a constant 4.5.

All in all I am newish to Nikon since switching systems Nov. 2927 with all purchases bring first time using any of them. My most recentky purchased lens is a used Nikkor 28-105 3 5-4.5 D. At so much lower cost than this 24-85 3.5-4.5 ED VR G.  But the old 28-105 in ways is as good as newer 24-85. Slower D screw drive response and no VR but OK. It is sharp, light and a good feel on my D750 and D7500. I had high hopes for the 24-85 mid range zoom. Anyway, my pics are a little better than when I ...

Having VR is a definite plus on a slow standard consumer zoom, but the old non-VR version can be found really cheap. I'm assuming the optical performance is about the same, so weigh the cost/value equation as appropriate. The 24-85 G (non VR) is a relatively compact and lightweight lens while still feeling substantial and well built. Ergonomics are fine without being exceptional. Immediately on using this lens, I was aware of the pincushion >35 mm and barrel <35 mm distortion. My advice: ...

Although I would have liked an even more compact & lightweight standard FF kit zoom lens (ie 24-70 f/3.5-5.6 VR) to accompany my D750, I must admit this one is really good value for money. It is very sharp throughout the whole focal range, only when zooming all the way in at 85mm it looks a bit soft when wide open, but still very sharp when stopped down two stops. AF is simply fast. Distortion (after in camera correction) is acceptable, but not 100% perfect as can be expected from a zoom ...

though this is a kit lens which bundles with D600, it is by no mean acheap lens!!! the IQ is really sharp when stopped down. it very light and focuses very fast. its a great multipurpose zoom lens. the best results i got were from F/5.6 to f/11. and with a price tag of around $500 i dont think u can get ny better!!!! its the lens which i mostly use and is stuck on the camera most of the times.

I purchased this to use on my D810 when I'm out walking around and don't want to take multiple lenses.  So far I've been very happy with the results, it's very sharp, lightweight and easy to use. Although it's not as fast as the big boy 2.8's it serves it's purpose very well producing very good picture quality.  I picked mine up used for 250.00, quite a steal I think.

This lens came with my D610 and in general I like it. Because I am much more of a prime person nowadays, I didn't think it made much sense to invest that much into a standard zoom so I decided that it made sense to go with this one and have more to spend on primes. In general I've been happy. It is a capable lens within its limitations. What I use it for is landscape work where it's size and range make it appealing on paper. In practice, it has been as good as I hoped it would be.  I like ...
