I own a Nikon d5300 camera and I recently purchased a Nikon 200mm f/4.0D ED-IF Micro-Nikkor lens for close-up photography. When I was testing it out today, I was shooting at f22, and my shots looked decent (not overexposed or underexposed), but when I shined a flashlight into the lens to look at the aperture blades, it looked like the lens was wide open, as if me stopping down on my camera didn't actually change the aperture. I am looking for a good Macro lens to use outdoors shooting bugs etc. I have a 60mm but at 18.5cm the minimum focus distance is too short as it scares everything away. I am looking for much more reach. I am considering the Nikon 200mm Micro which gives about 50cm which is a bit of a beast. As an alternative I was wondering if anyone could tell me what would be the effect on the reach (and quality) if I used a 105mm Macro with a Nikon teleconverter as I have the 1.4, 1.7 and 2.0.
