I bought this lens specifically for digitizing old slides and film. I use it on my Nikon D850. With my home brew scan setup, this lens beats probably any high priced film scanner on the market and it's waaay faster to produce an image. It's nice to archive slides that were shot in the 1950s, 60s and 70s that my relatives shot as well as all of the images I've captured using slide film. This lens is worth it just for this one purpose.

I was looking for a tack sharp long portrait lens for future use. I like the look of some of the longer 135mm f2's, but didn't have the cash for it. Until another photographer and a dear friend of mine suggested the 105mm f2.8. And man, did this lens NOT disappoint! It's very sharp wide open at 2.8 and tack sharp stopped down to 3.2/3.5. Heck, and because it's a macro lens, you can utterly blow out a background even at f4 on head shots. This is a special special lens! One thing to note ...

This is a great lens but for tabletop product photography, the it's too much of a zoom. i Should have gotten 85mm or maybe even the 60mm. The colors and sharpness are excellent.

This lens has exceptionally fast autofocus, probably the fastest i've seen. It produces stunningly sharp images. The only issue is focus problems in low to medium light conditions. Probably the best used for portrait rather than macro just because of the sharp images.

it the best lens i have used ever.currently i own a 18-55 55-300DX and 105mm micro. Micro performance is brilliant and sharpest. I am using to shoot micros with hand held and give amazing results with the VRII technology. I am yet to use in a tripod. Overall 'The Best' lens ever made by nikkon for DSLR beginners.

Absolutely fabulous. Sharpness is brilliant, performance is top notch and bokeh......... you don't even have to ask. This is my favorite lens. As a macro lens, it's killer. As a medium Tele, it's killer. Don't think twice about getting one. Problems: None; however, other Nikkors need these features. (like the 180mm 2.8)

By far! my best lens. The 105mm Micro gets you so close to your object that when you crop or zoom in to your images you see amazing results. Absolutely Love it. It was worth the buy!! Problems: The only thing. Is a bit heavy. But with Tripod or Mono-pod it works wonders...

Want to see in fantastic clarity details of insects, plants or anything else you can imagine to take a beautiful close up photo, then this lens is for you. I am currently using it on my D80 and soon on my new D7000, both DX giving me 157.5mm assisted by VRII (VR version 2, claimed 4 stops). With this level of zoom moving around by hand (no tripod or monopod) to get in close and flexible to that insect, flower or other interesting object, the vibration reduction is amazing. I read several ...
