Nikon Coolpix P300

Announced Feb 9, 2011 •
12 megapixels | 3 screen | 24 – 100 mm (4.2×)

Bottomline: Compact camera with manual settings, fast aperture (f1.8), 1080p video & high frame rate. Compared to the other cameras in its class, the P300 is one of the few compacts that offer manual modes: Manual, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Program The lens can open to its widest aperture of f1.8, which will allow you to increase your exposure without compromising image quality with higher ISO values. It's also got an incredible frame rate – shoots up to 7 frames @ 8frames per ...

The "expert" reviews (like the one on DPReview) are not so good to P300, but the user reviews on Amazon and other stores are very good. My old compact, Canon Ixus 970 IS (SD 890 IS in the US) died with “lens error” after 2 years and 2 months (2 year warranty was over), so I was searching for another compact (but no Canon again, obviously! This camera is very good in IQ in terms of low ISO usage. My main usage is for low light. F1.8 is very good for night shots even handheld using ISO 800 and even ISO 1600. The only three things I could be improved for me that are missing is the RAW and more powerful zoom and there is no battery charger supplied. One of nikons best cameras even for 10/8 prints on ISO 800 came good in terms of compact camera. Problems: Not so far

I like the fact that this little camera can be carried easily in a pocket at times when an SLR would be overkill and simply too heavy to lug around. It will take acceptable photographs in most situations if left in full auto but allows you to take contol with the usual PASM modes. There are shortcomings, like no RAW, lack of live histogram, unless exposure compensation is selected and limited flash power but it still packs an awful lot into a small body. If you work with what it has to offer ...

The P300 is well built, has a magnificent big and bright display, and takes great pictures with no-to-minimal effort. I have had other compact cameras and this one beats them hands down in terms of quality. It's also very fast: you shoot and you actually take "that" picture! The lens is sharp, colors are pleasantly saturated. If you like a camera that gives you great results without having to spend time editing, this is a little gem really. You can take pictures in low light thanks to the ...
