Like its predecessor Mate 7 the Mate 8 is a large high-end device with a 6-inch screen and 1080p resolution. It comes with a metal body that is available in four colors and offers rounded edges for a better grip. Android 6.0 Marshmallow and Huawei’s EmotionUI 4.0 software are powered by a Kirin 950 octa-core processor and according to Huawei the 4,000mAh battery delivers 30 percent longer battery life than the Mate 7, thanks to a more energy-efficient processor design.

In the camera department the Mate 8 features a Sony IMX298 1/2.8-inch CMOS sensor with on-sensor phase detection and an F2.0 aperture. Like on the P8 and Mate S image processing is undertaken by a dedicated image signal processor (ISP) rather than the main chipset. Optical image stabilization and a 720p 4x slow-motion video mode are on board as well, but sadly no 4K video resolution. The front camera offers an 8MP resolution and a microSD slot allows for easy memory expansion.
