I'm considering buying a 400/2.8 IS II for birding. I am confident that it will be everything I want in low-light situations (rainforest and similar). I also still have my wonderful old 500/4 IS Mark I. (1) How does the 400/2.8 II compare to the Mark I 500/4 in the 500mm range? (Mark I 500/4 bare lens vs Mark II 400 with 1.4 for 560mm f/4.) (2) And how does it compare in the 700mm range? (Mark I 500 with 1.4 for 700/5.6 vs Mark II 400 with 2.0 for 800mm f/5.6.) I am particularly interested in...

I read that people are using the newest 600mm from Canon with the 1.4x III extender because this combination is sharper as the newest 800mm alone. Is this true? What about autofocus? I own the newest 400mm from Canon, so I am wondering about the same questions with the 2.0x III extender.

I just bought a Canon eos 7D2 and I love! I shot a bunch of BIF today, the af was fast and shooting at a higher iso (up to 6400) things looked good on the lcd.... I made it home and plugged in my CF card and sd card, I thought having the codec pack for my older cameras running the cr2 files It would be no problem uploading, editing and possibly writing a review of my first glance of this camera. Turns out I am possibly SOL as I am running windows 7 and there is no codec for the newer 7D2...
One gives compositional benefits, other gives more light and superb sharpness. Deciding which one, is a tough question. Can someone please suggest ? Usage is mostly mammals, early and late evening and in very dusty conditions. Does the 200-400 zoom sucks dust? How is the in built teleconverter, useful ? Not sure if I want to use the in built one and make it a slow F5.6. Thanks. --Tiger Photography

I am considering to buy the 7D Mark II once I have saved the money for it, which will take some months to accomplish. I would then pair it with my 400mm 2.8L IS Mark II. Does this combo work well? I currently use two old cameras from 2005, the Rebel XT and my 5D Classic.
